    I had a buddy who was a Deputy Sheriff and few years back their team all had Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep products in their last vehicle purchase in a high salt state road use area. And interestingly almost all had them start having squeaks-rattles-bad grounds right about the 35-40K mile mark. Similar light issues due to grounds. Always fun to watch your diag/repair vids. Corrosion is a tough battle - you work against it well.

    Crimp and solder was what I was taught in the USAF. It is the most physically and electrically sound way to do any wire repair.

    • @Chaddz3
      @Chaddz3 2 года назад

      I used to work in the wiring harness industry where we would build wiring harnesses for Caterpiller and John Deere. They actually specified in the blueprint that all connections using crimp non insulated terminals had to be soldered. The only terminals that did not have to be soldered were wing style terminals that were installed using a bench press applicator and the terminated wire had to pass a pull test of X number of newtons based on wire guage without failing. any terminals put on by hand had to be soldered. Most ring terminals that we put on were usually solder dipped after termination.

    • @utidjian
      @utidjian 2 года назад

      @T.J. Kong The usual reason for using crimp plus solder (c+s) on automotive stuff is the crimp gives you solid mechanical connection and solder gives you a solid electrical connection... they are the two things required of a connection that arent the same thing. The added factor of automotive wiring is that the wires when stripped of insulation are almost universally bare copper. In all aircraft wiring I have worked with the wires are plated (some people call it "tinned" but it is not like the tinning one does with a soldering iron.) The plated wiring does a much better job of forming a good electrical connection between wire and connector than bare copper and connector. I understand why aircraft don't like the combination but there are plenty of places where they use solder instead of crimp connections of wire to terminal. Usually solder type connectors are used when the design spec wants a lower maximum voltage drop.
      It is not only that one needs "good enough" ratcheting crimpers. Just as important is how well made the dies are in that crimper. Then there is adjusting them properly for the gage of wire and type of connector. Soldering will cover up a multitude of sins in that respect.
      Most important in this situation is context: Environment, what is most important electrically, and expected service life. In this particular case the c+s repair that Eric did took into account all three of those factors.

    In the world of military power electronics no current ever flows in the chassis, a return wire is always run back to the common return point source. Sub assemblies are bonded to the chassis via a "green wire ground" for safety but everything has to function out of the chassis or cabinet. That way we don't count on rusty nuts, bolts and mechanical structures to carry current. It's also one of the reasons a "jeep" costs $500k..... always enjoy the tech content and the banter....... 73 from Boston

    I remember in the later 70s I had a Ford truck (not pickup) that started cooking its battery a night, meaning whenever the lights were on. Every time the lights were turned on the alternator voltage would start increasing to beyond my gauges ability to measure and got high enough to cause the battery electrolyte to boil.
    At that time, Ford used an external regulator for their alternators that were usually mounted near the radiator. The ground strap between the cab body and the engine block had gotten loose and corroded to the point that electricity could not flow through it. So every time the lights were turned on the started grounding through the regulator. That cause the regulator to mess up because of the backward flow of electricity and started increasing the alternator voltage to push electricity through the regulator to ground. That meant there was a feedback loop that with the regulator's need for a ground being messed up by the lights grounding through the regulator.
    Built a new ground strap, replaced the battery, tightened everything up real good, and everything started working like it was suppose to.

I have a bad star washer habit, I worked in boat manufacturing and armored vehicle production and every ground wire and many power connections had star washers on the connections, almost always between the connector and the vehicle chassis, I have a good selection of star washers on hand for quick upgrades. The fact that they can cut right thru paint and give a good solid chassis ground makes me happy. Watching you use down home logic to resolve issues makes me want go break something so I can fix it... You can't beat solder and crimp, best of both worlds. And a good coating of fluid film is a great idea, rather than using standard heatshrink, I have found the moisture can get trapped inside the heatshrink and cause the whole lot to rot again. Not so much with the glue lined heatshrink, but even then it's hard to guarantee a seal when your covering the end of a crimp. Nice job Eric!

    Mr O, you have the greatest automotive tool known to man. You cant learn it from a school or from someone else. You cant buy it and if you have it you cant sell it or give it away. Its yours to keep forever and its worth more than all the gold on Earth. Its called experiance. Lucky is the person that poseses it

    Good one, yes the grounds should be tested when lighting is giving you problems. Same on trailers.

    Solid repair. You provided a good mechanical and electrical connection with the crimp and solder. Can’t ask for more than that.

    Regarding the LED "upgrades" - I've been tasked to help with a "glitch in the headlights" for a malibu my sister in law bought. Digging further, they were "aftermarket upgrades". Can't wait.

    I believe when a turn signal flashes faster than "normal" it's due to a bad ground.

    • @utidjian
      @utidjian 2 года назад

      On older style US made cars with the bimetallic blinker units (all of them) the turn signals would blink *slower* than "normal" if there was a poor ground. VWs were weird because they would blink MUCH faster if there was a bulb out or a bad ground.

    If you are using a GoPro, especially the Hero 10, it seems that it may have a problem with it overheating in hot environments. I've see this mentioned on a few RUclips channels where they loose footage, or it just shuts down while they are recording. A quick Google search confirms that this is a problem. They did release a firmware upgrade that supposedly fixed it, but it still happens...

    Been in electronics for years and recently discovered liquid flux. Put it in a fine tip squeeze bottle used for ink jet printers. Works so good on corroded wires in awkward places. Drop it right on the wires. Good vids Eric

    I absolutely chased a ground wire on a jeep compass for the right front turn signal. Customer told me he put a bulb in it. That would have made the 10rh patriot compass with same issue which was ground wire so I pulled it apart and soldered new wire and ring terminal on about 8 wires and fire up the tuen signal and no dice. Change the bulb and it worked good.

    You are spot-on with the bad grounds on Dodges. I was applying Fluid Film under my '14 Ram yesterday and discovered 2 broken body to chassis ground straps. Thankfully I had no electrical issues yet, but your experience gave me the heads-up to look for that issue. Thanks for sharing what you are good at with the rest of us!

    Crimp and Solder. I'm in that same camp. The lead in the solder is going to last longer than the wire but at least it won't be coming loose.

    👍👍. Love seeing the bows in the background. The most rewarding way to take game. And I just hate it when I have electrical problems on my Chev 2500. Like now- the radio wonts turn off when I kill the engine and open the door. Used to.

    I followed one of those Dodge Nitros, yesterday. They were stopped at the intersection with the right turn signal on. The backup lights were flashing dimly, and the left brake light was flashing dimly. As soon as they took their foot off of the brake, things went back to normal.

    Grounds.
    Fender bender popped the driver side headlight out of 2001 impala. Put headlight back in and it works, but car started overheating and no AC at idle. Driver side fan not working. Fan nice and strong when directly wired to battery. Horn doesn't work. Book points to G101. Visual inspection G101 looks fine, but fails the tug test. Both wires broken, but insulation not broken. Recrimp the two wires at G101. Fan works, horn works.
    Ripping out the headlight, stretched the G101 wires. Insulation stretches but wire breaks.
    Love the videos, long-time viewer here.

    Solder on the crimp connectors. NICE. No one does that. No ones going to know you did it. 100% sure you'd do it without the camera running. Right thing to do. Pride in your work. VERY NICE.
