    Hey Sterling, another Killer video. 20:35 you say to find songs and singers that sing with "legato" and let the note flow, do you have any suggestions? Thanks again for all your precious advice.

    Could you suggest some techniques for disguising the stomach, maybe a special dance or stage costume designs? I'm learning to sing, but I don't want to give up my daily hamburgers. Man, I love hamburgers.

    Been having a cold almost all the time since the end of summer. Thought I had made progress with my mixed voice range but now it's squeaky again. I hate asthma 😑

    Great video 👍🤘 slightly off topic but I think you are the ideal person to ask since you have so many voices in your head like me! 😂 When you practice scales, what resonance or distortion do you practice in? Do you you have one core resonance that you consider your own that you always practice and warm up in? Do you only practice sounding like a particular singer when you are covering one of their songs? I've heard a number of people say that you shouldn't try to sing like your favorite singer but I can change my voice a lot based on the song, not as good as you, but the effect can be positive and I'm not 100% that's a bad thing.

      Singing like others can be enlightening and you can learn a lot. Ultimately you can also hurt yourself, do things wrong and hinder your progress as well. There are many factors here. Mimicking a persons voice is one thing, mimicking their voice and distortional voice is yet another. That’s like trying to mimic and contort your throat into even more positions which sometimes ain’t good haha. If you can find a person that sings similar to you and your voice feels more “free” singing with them that’s great. As for distortion, I tend to know what my voice likes and doesn’t like. I think about warming up like “stretching”. You’re slowy pushing into these different coordinations, testing the water and bringing a little and little more volume in as it feels right. Everything should be started out quietly. Once it’s working, run through your vowels to better on different notes higher and lower to get closer to regular singing. Does that help a bit?

      And lastly, distortional voices and grit do sound sometimes quite different on people. It’s like a second voice in a way. So, find out what your voice sounds like and wants to do. Maybe it feels easier higher… or maybe it happens easier with this vowel etc. That’s the goal

      @@SterlingRJackson okay awesome! Yes that's a great thought. I will try working through some exercises like vowels in a distortion that I'm liking 👍 I usually just imitate distortions directly to the song that I'm trying to sound like. Also starting out quiet and building is phenomenal advice that I'm starting appreciate how important that is.

    Great video Thanks!
    So you completely relax and expand your stomach (let it just all hang out) when you sing? I've practiced extensively keeping my core engaged but still sucking in deep breaths, which I think fills up my chest part of the lungs. Perhaps I should relax my core ? Perhaps when I'm really getting into it and getting that emotion, that's what I'm actually doing without realizing

    • @SterlingRJackson
      @SterlingRJackson  10 месяцев назад +1

      Well haha, you’re pushing into the diaphragm so you’re not exactly letting it all hang out but your breath shouldn’t necessarily be restricted. You should be able to take a good breath. It’s a building block sort of thing and I’m sure some people feel and experience it differently. Remember that tightening your abs or core doesn’t really do anything. It’s the pushing down into the diaphragm that you want. I have more videos about this if ya wanna dive deeper 😊

    I did realize for years I was holding back my stomach all the time even while singing, it was an anxiety issue, I was holding all of my tension in my stomach😂 once I realized this I started letting my belly hang out without holding it in and it has made a world of difference in many areas especially with my singing. Being completely relaxed is a huge accomplishment along with knowing where to sing from eh eh not from the throat😅

      So many pieces to this stuff and you can learn so much performing live. You really catch onto good and bad habits quickly when you’re on stage. Glad you’re figuring things out 😊

      @@SterlingRJackson thanks dude, it only took me 20 years 🤣 but the last year has been with a teacher but I also do my own research and try to always learn something new just like guitar and bass and drums etc, music is a journey and we never really stop learning. Glad to see you growing your channel and helping us all, hope your feeling better. Ps take expectorant to clean out your lungs, I've learned having asthma if you take a suppressant it just dries up and you stay sick longer 🤘
