Until the end of time, man's greatest achievement will be the ability to communicate complex emotions through the power and majesty of music. This piece is a perfect demonstration of that achievement.
The late Colin Davis was one of my favorite, perhaps "the" favorite of contemporary conductors, for me. He used to guest conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra decades ago when Seiji Ozawa was Music Director and the principal conductor, and Ozawa was excellent, but the exquisite Colin Davis was so elegant and the best. Probably I heard him conduct , as I sat in the balcony, Mozart or someone who required a refined manner interpretation, just as here with Elgar. All I can say is that I was in the right place at the right time to hear Colin Davis live more than once. (So interesting to watch his understated manner here in this video. That's exactly how I remember him so many years ago - and the sense that he was delivering a performance close to what was intended by the composer.)
With an aged port, a bar of rum and raisin dark chocolate, and the best headphones in a lowly lit room, this would place me in Nirvana. Sublime. Magnum opus.
we all die not everybody as the same luxury ok , the bottom line is everybody faces the same criteria in life your born you live and you die regardless of status ok they will be plenty of people wanting nimrod played by elgar at their funeral , but the reality is it wont happen , think on that sunshine
@@BassistPaul What an opportunity that would be. I'm sure he could keep us entertained all day. Like so many other Brits and non-Brits, this brings a tear to my eye, especially when played at a Remembrance Service to remember all those from every nation who fell in service of their country. Wonderful, moving music.
Yes, he was !!! When I listen to this version I am thinking of the late Queen Elizabeth II. What a remarkable Queen she was, I was in correspondence with her for many years (replies came from her ladies-in-waiting.) The last letter I got from Balmoral was three days before she died. Even though I am Finnish, I met and talked with her three times in the UK. I am still thinking of her every day, she was unique!! Greetings from Finland !!
This is finest interpretation of this spectacular musical masterpiece that I have ever heard. Sir Colin Davis brings out the incredible raw emotion of this piece like no other conductor through his masterful implementation of rubato, dynamics and his suberb musical artistry. I have listened to this performance a hundred times and it moves me more each time I hear it. Elgar must be so completely fulfilled from his grave!
@@firefighterps2 No the three of you are mistaken. There is no one I mean NO ONE who brings this piece to a greater climax than Sir Adrian Boult with the London Philharmonic. He also recorded it with the LSO which fails by comparison. Truly the best interpretation you will ever hear.
Considered to be one of the most melodic songs to be created. A person can interpret its meaning in so many ways which makes variations unique to the listener. There is hope, light, mystery and death. Yet, from death comes resurrection into the light once more. One could say that even the resurrection itself mirrors the universe and combines everything else into one opus such as this gem gives us. An incredible performance by the orchestra along with long time conductor Sir Colin Davis. A beautiful piece which will remain as timeless as our limitless imaginations can be.
The music captures, quite perfectly, the quiet, inexorable ebb and flow that the pain of grief places upon one's very soul....and, at the end, the possibility of acceptance ( the final major chord). This is why God gave us music...
This ”rendition” is perfect in every way, tempo, expression and dynamics. The MASTER of this piece with the Batton along with the most receptive musicians you could ever wish to hear.
This touches my deepest inner soul. Brings tears to my eyes. Cleanses both my conscious and sub-conscious like nothing else can. The ultimate in human excellence.
Its like the feeling you get when you enter an historic building and it transports you back in time,,the smell the feeling the nostalgia this tune will always make you remember the brave who died for us to live and its fitting for them RIP
Sir Colin is stretching the strings and time itself here. It is beyond lovely to me. It is the majesty of a young child discovering both the joy of a beach and the loss of a sibling. How can these two emotions go together at the same time? Only Elgar knew. And now we all do.
I live in Hong Kong. The night before the British handed over the territory to the Chinese in 1997 we had a wonderful concert playing all things British. Including Nimrod, Pomp and circumstance and every patriotic song. Wonderful.
A moving rendition of a sublime piece of music by the greatest of English composers, Edward Elgar, conducted here by one of the most accomplished English conductors, the late Colin Davis! To the memory of the great departed Queen Elizabeth II. RIP.
A sublime and moving piece of work that brings a tear to the eye to those who have known human suffering and loss. A classic of English music from Elgar superbly played here.
Velice krásná část, motiv připomíná trochu styl volných vět velkých koncertů Ludwiga van Beethovena. Jemně, citlivě a přitom velice precizně podáno. Děkuji za nahrávku a srdečně zdravím z České republiky, oblasti města Rakovník. ✋

Such a great version. When this movement is played separate from the rest of the variations (most often as a memorial piece), it is often taken a little slower. But this seems to be the perfect tempo for this.
There are many excellent performances of this beautiful piece, but I think this perhaps the very best of them. Does anyone know where and when it's from?
