I'm really interested in people's ME/CFS stories at all levels of progression rather than all the credit going to a happy ending of full recovery... part of the illness is the element of becoming so isolated and invisible to the greater world while in the thick of it. Showing people like Michael as an active member of society as an author while still making headway on his health feels very nourishing to the spirit of everyone with fatigue working through their process receiving some acknowledgement that the getting there part counts too.

For me, this was one of the most relatable interviews you've done. Probably, in part, because it resonates with my own experience. I got ME about 20 years ago, after a virus. I was severe and bedbound for years, and housebound for more years. I was using any energy I had running around from one doctor to another, getting treated pretty badly. I was in a state of desperation, trying one thing after another, and nothing worked. Finally, about 5 years ago, I did a course in mindfulness meditation. For the first time, I developed a sense of acceptance. It created a tiny space in which I began to see improvement. With improvement, I was able to start moving more. I wasn't trying to move more--it just happened organically, as I was feeling better. Gradually, I started being able to get out with my husband. We started going to cafes, then restaurants, then on short vacations. Two years ago, I was able to go to Yosemite for the first time in 20 years, by renting a van so I could rest when needed. For me, acceptance has been a very powerful concept. And, paradoxically, by accepting my current condition, I've been able experience a better condition.

I found your channel after developing CFS with long covid. I just want to encourage others (as you did to me) that this is possible to heal from. This week, praise God I was able to travel abroad and climb hills, bike for an hour, walk 15k steps and I was fine after. At the height of my illness, I could barely sit up. I am keeping everyone who is suffering from this in my prayers. Thank you for the encouragement and advice you gave when I really needed it.

I love what he said about having an allowance and acceptance of the bad days it makes it easier to get thru it. I think this can also be applied to grief or anxiety or any upsetting emotion. Instead of fighting or being afraid let these emotions or bodily sensations/symptoms come and they will eventually pass. That is how we heal.

  • @AnrupB

I love his honesty and transparency of the healing process, how severe it can be, and the toxicity of a lot of views around recovery (and the fact that it’s possible!) i also dealt with mild for a long time then Covid decided to send me to severe (moderate now).
Raelan, I’m also happy to see someone who hasn’t fully recovered on your channel. I think it’s important to hear from those still in the process as more people may relate based on where they are in their own recovery.
Also, I appreciate his vision and desire to stick to this project, I needed the reassurance that taking a long time to do something we want to do is ok. Definitely getting his book! ❤

It's a real.problem in the communities with recovered people being gaslit by others who have not. I am in my 28th year and was also bedridden for 8 years...I am a lot better but still in recovery. Ty for sharing

As others have said, its really helpful to hear about the improvements, that are an ongoing. Its great to see people that are now up to hiking up a mountain, but its more helpful to see a process.

Thanks Raelan and Michael. 😊 Well done on how far you have come, Michael!
What an amazing achievement to have finished writing your comic book!
Your story inspires me to put more movement into my day. I know I can't exercise but I can try a little movement.
Acceptance of the condition sounds very important too. All the best for your continued journey to full recovery. 💫

And I will add: maybe not so much acceptance of the condition but “not resisting” the condition. I neither accept nor reject, I am just not resisting the condition. I try to have this as my moto.
Best if health to you and all of us.
      Much love

This is such a profound and unflinching account of Michael's 'dark night of the soul' presented with such authenticity in an unvarnished way that I'm feeling a lot right now. The journey so far sounds frightening but also full of hope, relentless but also driven by meaning and purpose and the book is an incredible accomplishment. Thank you both, Raelan and Michael for presenting this to us with such vulnerability and courage.

Hello, what doctor diagnoses you with this syndrome? What specialty is the doctor?
I currently have many symptoms that match CFS and I am going from one doctor to another, neurologist, rheumatologist and they don’t find anything wrong. All end up saying I am anxious and depressed and I should relax and workout out more. I am unable to do any sports, I am exhausted most of the time and it’s frustrating and energy depleting to have to explain this to everyone over and over.
In this way, I am really going to have a mental breakdown.
Maybe you have a video on my question that I didn’t see. Thank you!

It's good to reach out to local support groups and groups on Facebook in your area as they usually have a lost of doctors who understand the condition. 😌

If this is very severe, then what would you call someone who cannot hear any noise or be exposed to any light or move or be touch without significant pain, has never ending chronic pain, cannot move, and must be fed by syringe? Are there any stories of a recovery from this type of ME CFS?
