God, what a beautiful machine. While diesel and electric locomotives can be impressive, they just don't compare to steam ones. The sounds they make, like living, breathing entities combined with the whirligigs and moving mechanisms we can actually see make for a rewarding and unforgettable experience. Such an incredible sight!
A heavy train on a grade! "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, I thought I could!" She did! A beautiful video of a hard working girl and a good engineer. Thanks for capturing it. 🎉😂
My husband got the privilege to drive this locomotive when it was restored in North Judson indiana on its way to Fort Wayne indiana he had a lot of fun to experience a footplate cab ride throttle experience at the throttle doing a wide open throttle at 85mph high ball as he called it in trains term of going very fast from North Judson indiana all the way full head of steam to Fort Wayne indiana museum
@@kristafoster7190 Did your husband know my late coworker Richard "Dick" Yager, from the SP 4449 crew? I was Dick's coworker at the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation (ORHF) / Oregon Rail Heritage Center (ORHC) in Portland, Oregon for a few years. I was proud to call Dick Yager a good friend, and I was honored to know him. Dick Yager was one of the coolest men I knew. Knowing Dick Yager changed my life.
Great video - thanks for sharing. I grew up on E. 47th St. and remember running over to the "hump back bridge" and watch these come barreling through on rare occasions. That whistle is something you never forget.
Amazing patience, and an interesting video in U.K. if not on the rails of a Heritage Railway Line, it certainly would not be pulling the load that she was carrying, it looks like she could still earn a decent living. I was well impressed.
Where there's smoke there's a fire. All the fireperson needs to learn now is how to turn the stoker down and use the water injectors. Well at least he knows the safety's works properly!

In this situation 765 was as full throttle as you can get. They have the engine overfired hence the super black smoke and relief valve blowing off in an attempt to get every bit of horsepower to the track. The call was even given to the dispatcher that a stall was imminent and to send assistance. Luckily this is one of the best crews in the business and it wasn't needed.
@@Heat0ne Wouldn't it make sense to just highball it on the way to the start of the grade and then use all the built up energy to just scream up the hill with the throttle wide open?
Great video. Been a terrific one if the idiots would have common sense to get out of the way. Specially when you see that someone is trying to video record it.
I cannot believe I missed this. I live close by and I didn't know anything about this. What was the occasion, and is it Scheduled to come through here again?
They were about to stall. The call was even put in to the dispatcher to send assistance. They were trying to get every bit of available horsepower by over pressuring the locomotive.
That fireman has his job on the RED CARPET for wasting all that fuel and safety valve lifted and black carbon out the stack. He could get a letter of rec. with a water mark of a goose with a broken neck. That meant he has been black balled (NO JOB ON ANY RAILROAD).

Just something intriguing about steam. Ever see video or the Shay locomotive in action?

Such a thing of beauty. Alone and unassisted she pulled her load onwards and upwards. How I miss the age of steam.
Well. Fun fact. She actually needed a helper unit because it was stalling on a hill to go south.

It's so beautiful to hear the steam engine accelerating away from the camera.. Seems like it got the hang of it, after passing the level crossing..

The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954, only for the cameras in those cellphones
The sid that was filmed was the fireman side of the locomotive. The engineer side of the cab is on the right side of the locomotive.
I like train's and riding on old trains

It looks like they found some guys that never saw a steam locomotive before trying to operate this steamer.
They should have opened up the steam throttle and added some extra weight to the wheels then it might have driven a whole lot better

Or,to much coal in the firebox and its putting off a lot of black smoke
Rubbish injectors do not produce smoke
Yes do, when they spray water on the fire in the fire box. Did it myself on steam engines

What on earth are they burning? It looks as if they could do with a few tons of good Welsh steam coal!
They're just overfiring to get up the hill. They almost called in assistance to get the locomotive some help to get up the grade.
The pops (safety valves) were lifted during virtually all of this sequence, wasting a huge amount of coal and water. There is no excuse for this.
