A great idea... I usually place my tape back a little bit from the edge of the balancer... and then I will take and place a center punch mark every 10 degrees on the balancer... TDC is already marked... and then one mark @10 degrees... 20... 30... and 40. And you can dab a dot of fingernail polish on each punch mark. Isn't math a wonderful thing? I typically multiply the diameter times PI (3.140) which gives me the circumference, and then dived this by 360 (the number of degrees in a circle) and then you can multiply this times 10 (to give you the length of 10 degrees), 20 (for 20 degrees), 30, and finally 40. You can also multiply the degree number times 36 to give you that mark.

My dampner is a Summit silicone one & it says to not engrave or put dimples in it with a drift punch. Any help on my above question. Im at a stand still now.

Good info. Timing has been a black hole for me...thanks for taking the time to clarify it.

Its not lining up with my timing chain cover . I get 9 degrees at the 7 degrees on the timing chain cover . Im 6.75 inch Balancer x 3.14 = 21.2 then 2.1 inch to 36 degrees .on the timing cover 12 degrees is 0.75 inch , so 36 degrees would be 2.25 according to this timing chain cover . The timing cover assumes im using a 7.165 inch harmonic balancer . wtf

Great video bro! Got a bit confused with the 1.8 degrees instead of inch. But then realized . thank you very much

Due to modern fuels I find the manufacturers marks are no lo ger accurate. I've just used a vac guage to set my timing, setting to the highest reading..
I bought a dial back light but it confuses me more 😕

I've got a 77 dodge bb 400 & just put a new timing ch ain & sprockets on it. I also bought a new Summit unmarked dampner & MSD distribuor & new timing tape. My question is, with timing cover temporarily on, do I align timing mark dots on sprockets, put distributor in pointing to number one position, slide damper on temporarily, put timing tape on with "0" pointing at timing cover "0" timing tab? I've got the dampner to pull off dampner for final installation. Any help here?

My chev is in a boat and doesn’t have the harmonic balancer, the fly wheel is where it would normally be, so will these math equations work the same for marking timing marks on the flywheel?

I’m having trouble with my timing and I’m tired of trying to adjust it. I am not a mechanic it is not my profession. I took it to 3 mechanics and I’m still not satisfied. Tired of spending money on these mechanics that supposedly have experience in carb. I will fly you out to get my 85 gt running the proper way. Please help me

Lol - racist flag. Seems like a bunch of people standing up for their own rights, not to be told to do by the government. Is that not what so many people are doing today ?
