      True. The high bar at the time was SNES superFX chip (Starfox) but this was next level. I think I preferred the cleaner solid filled polygons of SNES though -- Never was a huge fan of the muddied textures of that generation PC game or PS1, which is why I was a big N64 guy a few years later.

      This game has aged very badly. The controls are abysmal.
      But boy, oh boy
      Playing this back then was something absolutely fantastic.
      Even then we realised the controls were not that much, and how simple the game was.
      But everyone loved it.
      I couldnt even believe I was playing that at home.

    • @surject
      @surject Год назад +2

      It looked very realistic :) ..coming from games like X-Wing or even all the MicroProse games - but it was on rails (pre-rendered 3DS FLIcks) with only small (but essential) movement control of your sprite, same as in MegaRace by Cryo (with real footage and a hilarious host for the cut scenes). CD-ROM just had too much space...

    • @toninhopavan2
      @toninhopavan2 8 месяцев назад

      It was not just the graphics. The sound, music, animations, real speech (and the staff of this game is better then modern ones). MS DOS games, or genesis\snes games that we had back then were awesome (still are)... but this was next level. We knew the game was simple and the gameplay was not a big of a deal... but damn!
      I remember I couldnt even believe I was playing a game like that. At home.

  • @dudujencarelli
    @dudujencarelli Год назад +10

    I still remember this. Back in 1993, it was a jarring feeling going from X-Wing to this game. In X-Wing you had full control of the ship. In this, you spent most of the time fighting the controls. They somewhat fixed this on Rebel Assault 2, but this is the one game that a joystick was all but required. I could beat this on Easy and Normal, but never on Hard.

    • @Shot5hells
      @Shot5hells Год назад

      interestingly X wing alliance also won't work without a joystick, but X wing and TIE fighter which came before it don't.

    • @dudujencarelli
      @dudujencarelli Год назад

      @@Shot5hells To clarify, you can beat both Rebel Assault games with a mouse - and I'd argue it's the better setup for the second one. But for the first one, it's near impossible.
      I've seen playthroughs of the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter with a mouse. X-W Alliance required the joystick due to the more complex maneuvers and options that weren't a part of the original games - namely rudder control and secondary axis movement, which a mouse couldn't manage.

    Man, the memories! I got this game as part of a PC pack of Lucas Arts game from Best Buy back in the day. I was never able to beat Rebel Assault. I think the farthest I got was the first Hoth mission where you're following a probe droid through Ice tunnels. Now Rebel Assault II, I not only was able to beat, but I went back and beaten that game on the hardest difficulty. I do have both games through Steam, so one of these days, I need to see if I can get them to run again.

    I feel bad for today's generation of teenagers who will never know the sheer excitement of being in front of a black DOS screen of a freshly booted 486 with the following text a seemingly open invitation to start your adventure:
    C:\>_
    Then after typing a few command lines and some tentative seconds later, the black screen is replaced by a pixelated, almost clumsy but wonderous world of colour and sound, brought to life by a machine with 1% the power of what they today carry in their hand.
    Just a modest collection of games, stored in big boxes complete with thick paper manuals, sometimes maps and other goodies, but that was it. No overwhelmingly large library of sugar-coated rubbish, just a solid collection of games you loved. Simple graphics and sound that somehow transported you to other worlds better than the "life-like" games of today even do.
    This game was epic back in the day, those cut-scenes and official sounds from the movies were next-level...Time to fire up the old emulator!
