- Brad served in the 75th Ranger Regiment and was part of Task Force Ranger "Black Hawk Down" as a Ranger in 3rd battalion. He then went on the join The Unit and spent 12 years there pre and post 9/11.
Since leaving the military, Brad returned to his passion: music. He gathered a group of veterans who now make up the band “Silence and Light”.

I absolutely love listening to Brad. We are just about the same age and he speaks well for our generation. I got out of the Marines in April 93, so Mogadishu was just brewing at that time.

He's right about the perception of time. Once you got the decent jobs the time flies. The foundation is fucking forever or so it seems.
Listening to Brad talk about his soldier experiences makes me feel like I’m deployed and just sitting around our bunks telling stories. It’s incredible how every Ranger has these same experiences.

The Sgt Spizzo he referenced was my DS at Sand Hill cicra 1990-1991, 1st/38th, “Rock of the Marne”. He was on a DS tour and he hated it, wanted to get back to 75th ASAP. Everyone called him “Ranger Spizzo” behind his back because he always tried to get us to Ranger standards, most of us were contract 18X or only airborne, there were a few nasty legs, LOL. He wanted everyone of us to be ready for RIP no matter the contract. I learned how to push way mind and body way beyond my known limits, and unknown limits, THANKS TO SPIZZO. CANT THANK HIM ENOUGH. By the way , he retired as E-9 and is a management consultant now. You can google him. Interesting dude! Maybe a show candidate?

Aw I'm so sad the project about Mogadishu didn't go through. I was excited for it all year and the 30th anniversary was such a fitting moment too. ☹️ I hope Brad will revisit the idea and get the guys together. It would be really interesting to hear how Mark Bowden wrote the book

Great interview. I really enjoy listening to these stories. I like the point about how it was in the 80's seeing a soldier with the combat patch or CIB. I remember going thru the Light Fighters course at Ft. Drum in April 87 and there was a land nav instructor who was a former member of either the 1st or 2nd battalion. I was in awe of him, there he was a SSGT wearing the OD green starched OD green fatigues, combat patch, CIB, ranger tab/scroll. He was squared away.

Tom is done with the interviews about his time in the military. On the Shawn Ryan show he said that was his last time talking about things because it does something to him reliving all that Hell in the past.

An 8 part Netflix series on Mogadishu would be amazing. Hell even try to talk some of the Somalis that survived it.
I hate “the word”, it still exist in units in the Army and there is no reason for it especially in modern times where everyone has a cell phone where you can let everyone know anything important they need to know l, so if I could help it as I become a platoon sergeant and such I tried to never do it.

1:12:32 when Brad says the friendly fire incident was at the direction of an import, does that mean the guy in command is a school house Ranger, but not a guy that had served in the Regiment?
If anyone sees this, your answer would be greatly appreciated.
Side note for the hosts, stopping quickly to explain some of the military jargon and acronyms would be really helpful.
For a lifelong civilian, I am familiar with a fair bit of armed forces lingo and can generally figure out the acronyms using logic, but there were numerous instances in this excellent interview where i had to pause and try to figure things out.

It's always crazy how I see or meet what looks like a pretty normal dude who has gone through all this stuff, but I was raised to only see military dudes as chiseled jawed Meatheads and told I could never do what I wanted. I often regret just accepting that because I don't look like Arnold or Stallone I shouldn't bother trying to join.
The DoD / army supported the movie Blackhawk down because we use movies for recruiting purposes we were preparing for war 1997-2001. We knew osama was a huge threat. And Iraq was being planned in 1998-2002. But We have a all volunteer military we literally depend on movies, books, tv shows to fill our ranks. They had former delta guys on set. Also most people don’t know chuck norris had delta operators on set for the movie delta force. He was approached by dod to make the movie. #1 for recruiting same with top gun. But also they were hoping they could deter Terrorist taking hostages if we could give them something to fear. It does you no good having a secret unit. Hence why delta has never been secret. That’s just ignorant people spreading myths. The only thing secret is future operations. Or title 50 ops. But even those will get outed by politicians.

After the shoot down of Spirit 03 in Kuwait how would an AC-130 have been authorised to operate during the day in 1993? I know the mission ended up going overnight but that was never the intention or even expected.
Spirit 03 was well past its normal operating time. The crew stayed into the day to keep up the fire support. It was their call. I’m not sure how you’d change guidance when the aircraft was already operating outside it.

I was no SF guy, had some nice intersections with our finest, but just wanted to say that training is nothing more than embracing 'the suck' 🫡.. One thing about Mogadishu hot wash: I do hope that all field grade assessment was collected to prevent future operational insufficiency. I saw good indications that it did, but I don't really know. I know a Philipina that I'd love to say hello to, Can you send me out on trials?
