    When the dining room floor was demoed the crew found a subfloor made of old growth pine timbers. Charlie Silva has an idea for reusing those timbers as a barn type door for the new pantry. Kevin finds Charlie in his shop working out the details. They finish taking out the original cut nails, plane the boards, clean up the edges at the jointer and glue up the boards before cutting to length. They attach the top and bottom rails and take a look at their new old door.

    I remember years ago when wood like that would end up in the landfill or burn pile because it was viewed as trash. I'm glad attitudes have changed greatly about reclaimed lumber over the years. Reclaimed wood is magnificent and you usually cannot get new wood with the same quality as reclaimed wood these days.

    Any specific reason why the wood weren't glued together?

    • @donabele1243
      @donabele1243 4 года назад +3

      Yeah, 20 years of Norm gluing the full length of the boards (even with dominoes in the last couple of seasons) and Charlie comes along and only secures the board at the tenons. Doesn't make sense. Of course, these 'vignettes' also don't make sense, they leave out most of the details and important information.

      Would the expansion and shrinkage of the boards cause the glue to fail?

    • @The_Cookie_Knight
      @The_Cookie_Knight 4 года назад

      @@tastemystuff Nope. The board would expand and contract along the width of the grain and not the length of the grain.

    • @Heraclitean
      @Heraclitean 4 года назад +1

      It's not necessary. Saves glue, easier to assemble, easier to clean up. The glue on the tenons plus the cross pieces on top and bottom are plenty to keep the door together.
