James Merlaut of course it is! These guys are extremely tough. Even the simple looking arm/leg locks would actually cause serious injury. If they were to let rip, none of them would be walking away.
@@granv1l Yeah, but the least they could've done was make it not look so ridiculous, not to mention their technique was sloppy. I meet some US Marines whenever I compete in International Karate and this would be a joke to them.
@@JamesMerlaut Kyokushin karate. I am very aware that people think Kyukushin is the effective type of karate so I would not be surprised to be told that it was just my school and that in other places it is really effective. I did Kyokushin Karate at one school, my friend did it at another school. We also had major gradings (I forget what they were called) where we trained with Kyukushin karateka from all over the place. It all seemed the same. I don't think my school was the exception, I think the instances of effective kyukushin karate is the rare exception. I do Muay Thai now. Still a beginner and know very little. However, it is very clear to me that Muay Thai is a very technical martial art. When I did karate the Sensei and Senpai used to walk down the line of us punching thin air and adjust our punches on the basis of them being in the wrong area (e.g. we were supposed to be hitting at stomach height but people were not paying attention and hitting at head height). That was the level of coaching I experienced. Then I go to Muay Thai and the coach is looking at my distance management, footwork, speed (not just the speed of my punch but also the retraction), power, accuracy. He basically gives me something new to work on to improve my punching every week (and my punching still isn't very good, there is slow progress). To be clear, my punching from a Karate perspective was very good. It is just Muay Thai is far more technical. My Karate background has been of no assistance whatsoever. When I did Karate, I would be double-graded (when the Shihan was doing the grading) and I was also in the "Blackbelt" club (an "elite" club for those special few who were sure to become blackbelts. We got extra training - from guest instructors. All of it rubbish.

They could - it just wouldn't be as entertaining. A lot of the stuff they do could be demonstrated in a more realistic way, it would just be boring because you need to wait for an opportunity to perform a particular technique. It is not easy to impose a particular technique if the circumstances don't allow. That means they could demonstrate some hard sparring/rolling but the crowd would be less likely to see the entertaining stuff.
