  • Too many tennis players focus solely on their first serve - and either hardly ever practice their serve or don't really know how to win points after hitting their second serve.
In this video, I'll show you how to use different spins and locations to keep your opponent guessing. And you will also see how to defend against aggressive returns and how to practice these plays.

Danke Meike for doing a second serve video.I just started hitting 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock for a second serve to the body and it's become my favorite.

I am a pretty average 64 year old recreational player. I rarely hit my 1st serves above 75% power to ensure consistency. Consequently my 2nd serves are about the same, which results in quite a few aces. I do occasional double faults but my aim is to hit more aces than double faults. Sometimes I throw in my joker, forehand grip and slice the ball with reverse spin. If I get it right first time, I pretty much always win the point.

    Hallo Meike,

pause at 3:38, close to foot fault 🙃. Changing zones of serve is efficient, serving a second serve on firts serve can surprise your opponent too. You a re right, the placement to play the return shot is often the main difficulty at amateur level.

Hi coach - I serve with a very mild eastern forehand grip. I stand like Johnny Mac back almost to the court - this was accidental and came about because I dropped the frying pan serve and struggled to pronate so I used the eastern grip and found if I stood like Mac the ball would go in with loads of spin.
My coach kept trying to make me go onto Conti but I kept rebelling because I've accidentally landed on a serve that really foxes people. (My coach played pro and played a slam winner and lost 3-6 4-6 wow). However now I've managed to convince her I should master this serve before I go onto conti and she's come round and is letting me do it - maybe she's just given up on my stubborn brain.
I hope this short story about my tennis adventures is a bit interesting - if not sorry and Merry Christmas :)

If you have success with it and you get variation then yes, stick with it.

Just got bicep tendonitis after my last serve practice but I still have some flex league matches. I'll be serving the softest slice serves there is

Where do you look before your serve? How to avoid that my opponent sees in my eyes where I'll serve? So so you look always at the same spot to avoid that problem? Thanks

I look up to where I am going to strike the ball. The court does not move so no need to look down the court.

But then you will never improve your first serve if you dont practice. This is basically what i have been doing. Just kick serve all day. Both 1st and 2nd. Now i always win with my 2nd but my 1st is just useless. Time to grind away with baskets of balls again till its an actual swrve.
