16:50, those steam vent lines are also to used to help bleed the coolant and prevent hot spots. The knock sensors are also there to prevent detonation. Great video btw

I was building a 454 and following along with your series but have recently got a great deal on an LS and have decided to now build it. What a great coincidence that you are doing a series on an LS now😂 i already know this is going to be a great quality and detailed series. Definitely will be keeping up on this one.

Just wanted to say, the Knock sensors are for measuring preignition/detonation, which can be catastrophic to the engine if left unchecked. The computer can retard timing and adjust other things in order to combat it. Detonation causes increased cylinder pressure and temperature and can result in melting a piston, for example.
Currently in the process of not really “rebuilding”, but more as, changing stock parts that are broke to ensure it will run.. hopefully 😅 but, I have been rewatching these videos as references to where hoses go, torque specs and probable causes. Very helpful for me personally and I am so glad I managed to find the exact engine you’re working on. 😂
The best series I've found for LS building on youtube so far! I'm building a 1961 Impala, and decided to keep the OG 283 in it, but I want to build an LS for it later and this video is giving me confidence to do it and making me ansy to finish my 283 as well lol! Thanks for the great content.

Thanks so much for posting these man, my dad’s 5.3 gave out at 387k about 2 weeks ago and he gave me the engine to do whatever with. This is my first engine build and I want to build it for twin turbos and put it in a cat eye 1500. If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.
That's awesome! Basically, copy this and get a forged crank, different cam, lesson the compression to like 9:1 or so and strap the turbos on. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for these. My pops passed last year and left me a 2001 Sierra SLT z71 4x4 with this exact motor, just about the same mileage with a little lifter tick when warming up too. Wasn't sure what to do with it.. Might take a stab at this now and try to restore with your detailed explanation & hopefully a buddy with the other tools I don't have lol. I have a 1999 Chevy silverado, 5.3 liter, vin T, LM7 engine with a bad cam gm# 12560966. Can I replace the 1999 cam with a 2000 gm# 12560967 cam? Would any re-tuning reprogramming be required?
Just so you know, I have a 5.3L engine in my garage, Just "because" of you. I paid 300 CAD for it. It's in good condition, and I am at the machine shop state and buying part state. And it's the first time I did work like that, the first engine ever, and I have a unique plan for it, like a mustang gt500 supercharger on my ls ;p. Thanks for making that series of videos; I must have watched it at least 3 times. But don't laugh; I've undoubtedly missed the part, in every ls video, on how to remove this #$% fan with a clutch on the water pump; I tried every tool, heavy tool, cutting tool, and I can't remove it. Now it's just a question of pride and easy packing for the metal scrapper. Everybody must know "how to hit him on the nose" to separate the two damn things. I'm afraid to search to see how stupid I am ;p. Or mine is stuff beyond anything. It will have an electric water pump instead.

I have a 2003 Chevy work truck 4.8 4l60e woth 350k miles on it. Motor knocks and tranny slips. I had the 4l60e rebuilt and bought a junkyard 5.3l not as old. Truck runs brand new! 5.3l has obvious more power than my 4.8l. 😅
I have a 2004 GNC Sierra 1500 4WD with this motor and my question is about my 4L60E transmission. I clearly don’t believe it would hold up to this build. Can I use the original transmission and have it rebuilt to withstand that beefed up 5.3 or do I need to upgrade to anew one and if so what would you recommend??? Also, would the transfer case need upgrades as well? And one final question can all of the OEM front accessories go back on as well as the original wiring harness?!? Because, I will be doing this build for the truck it’s in and using it to pull a 7x12, two axle box trailer for my yard company…
I believe you could have it beefed up but for the money you might want to just go with a 4L80E. As far as transferase upgrades go you can just get that beefed up and it would be more than fine it is a good unit. Yeah all the accessories will bolt up and everything should plug in, you will just have to figure out how to mount the MAF sensor on the intake tube but that is easy peasy. Thanks for watching!

I just got my 5.3 a couple of days ago, I'm having issues getting the torque converter off, cause the bolts are super tight and don't think they never been taking off. You think if I was to use a breaker bar that would work?

I’ve watched the whole series a few times now. I have my 5.3 ready to disassemble and start the process. My question is if I do the same exact build will I be able to tune it for a daily driver or will I have to use a different cam? Thx
Nice! Yeah you will totally be able to tune it for a daily use. It just won't make as much power as we did. You might want to take the compression down to 9 or 10:1 or so just so it runs on pump gas a bit easier.
Watched your video on LM7 build, great work. Got a question on costs comparison. I priced out your components last week with Summit Racing. it added up to around $8k not including the cost of a machine shop. Based upon the hardware that you used. just curious what the costs would be to purchase a similar engine already built thru summit racing or other sites. I feel like I have enough experience to do this type of job, but is the trade off worth it. Thank you
Was less when I did it. Inflation has really done a number. I know you can buy a cheaper engine prebuilt from Summit and that's totally a cool way to go but if you wanted to do it yourself this is the way to go. Thanks for watching!

So is this a cast iron block 5.3? Also- how did you determine that it really is a 5.3 and not a 4.8 since they're identical externally? I know a lot of folks are out there selling 4.8's and saying they're 5.3's. I think there is a number code on the block?

I have a lot of parts saved in cart on summit. i originally planned to reuse the stock ones but i saw some weird wear on 1 push rod so i will def change rockers. Im not going too crazy on build just want tit to be reliable because it will be my daily again. Thanks for the info and tips
In my opinion it kinda takes away from how nice it is to have fuel injection and just starting on a dime. BUT if you have a legacy build might fit the build better. It would kinda look like an old school small block. Thanks for watching!
I'm upset that you can find so many rebuild videos on RUclips for GM 5.3L But when you search Ford Triton 5.4L rebuilds the listing is very vague. Can Anyone offer some assistance?
Great question. The 5.4L Ford 3v is definitely a dark spot on Ford's engine history. They have tons of problems that can't really be solved without a large amount of work so people tend to stay away from them. I have a 2005 Ford 150 with the 5.4L 3v that I got for very cheap knowing I'd have to replace the engine at some point. If we do rebuild that engine you will see it right here on this channel BUT it will be a stock rebuild since there isn't any cool parts for it. Thank you so much for watching!
Yes I'm aware but the 3V Triton has a lot of Power despite its many issues. Some engine rebuilders will try to customize certain oil passage ways and galleys to allow more lubrication to the cams. I still see a lot of them today in the shop I work in for just simple routine oil changes. I'm very excited to see the video you have for the 3V Triton.

I’ve watched the whole series a few times now. I have my 5.3 ready to disassemble and start the process. My question is if I do the same exact build will I be able to tune it for a daily driver or will I have to use a different cam? Thx
Nice! Yeah you will totally be able to tune it for a daily use. It just won't make as much power as we did. You might want to take the compression down to 9 or 10:1 or so just so it runs on pump gas a bit easier.

Watched your video on LM7 build, great work. Got a question on costs comparison. I priced out your components last week with Summit Racing. it added up to around $8k not including the cost of a machine shop. Based upon the hardware that you used. just curious what the costs would be to purchase a similar engine already built thru summit racing or other sites. I feel like I have enough experience to do this type of job, but is the trade off worth it.

Was less when I did it. Inflation has really done a number. I know you can buy a cheaper engine prebuilt from Summit and that's totally a cool way to go but if you wanted to do it yourself this is the way to go. Thanks for watching!
Bolts were too long on engine stand for me. had to use three ac compressor bolts and used one of those long bolts with a ton of washers.
Would you apply this same tear down and rebuild on an lq4 or is it different? Besides the cube difference?

So is this a cast iron block 5.3? Also- how did you determine that it really is a 5.3 and not a 4.8 since they're identical externally? I know a lot of folks are out there selling 4.8's and saying they're 5.3's. I think there is a number code on the block?
Yes it is a cast iron block. The VIN of the truck tells me it's a 5.3. But it is always a good idea to double check.

I started to do mine as far as disassembling it. I have a stand from Harbor freight and those bolts don't work with it, they are too long

I have a lot of parts saved in cart on summit. i originally planned to reuse the stock ones but i saw some weird wear on 1 push rod so i will def change rockers. Im not going too crazy on build just want tit to be reliable because it will be my daily again. Thanks for the info and tips
Whats your thoughts on using a carb and the msd 6ls box conversion for this build?
In my opinion it kinda takes away from how nice it is to have fuel injection and just starting on a dime. BUT if you have a legacy build might fit the build better. It would kinda look like an old school small block. Thanks for watching!

I'm upset that you can find so many rebuild videos on RUclips for GM 5.3L
But when you search Ford Triton 5.4L rebuilds the listing is very vague. Can Anyone offer some assistance?
Great question. The 5.4L Ford 3v is definitely a dark spot on Ford's engine history. They have tons of problems that can't really be solved without a large amount of work so people tend to stay away from them. I have a 2005 Ford 150 with the 5.4L 3v that I got for very cheap knowing I'd have to replace the engine at some point. If we do rebuild that engine you will see it right here on this channel BUT it will be a stock rebuild since there isn't any cool parts for it. Thank you so much for watching!
Yes I'm aware but the 3V Triton has a lot of Power despite its many issues. Some engine rebuilders will try to customize certain oil passage ways and galleys to allow more lubrication to the cams. I still see a lot of them today in the shop I work in for just simple routine oil changes. I'm very excited to see the video you have for the 3V Triton.

Knock sensor... not NOX. It literally listens for ignition knocks and adjusts the timing accordingly.
