Given the current state of the Xbox and the recent developments, I am more convinced than ever that the Xbox was always at a disadvantage. Microsoft was inevitably going to be its downfall. I don't think Microsoft was ever in the gaming industry for the love of gaming and the craft. I think they just saw another opportunity for them to hopefully make as much money as then can.
They clearly stated out loud that they were looking to put Sony out of the gaming business. They've never been in it for the "love " of gaming that isn't how reality works. They saw how much Nintendo and Sony were making and thought they could totally take over gaming like they did with PC OS and have failed every day since
People seem to have this delusion that Xbox is so profitable for MS. Xbox has never made MS a penny while costing them billions. MS shareholders have wanted Xbox gone since the defective product 54% failure rate 360 and the billions it cost the to fix it

No BS. If it weren’t for extremely lax tax codes for mega-corporations that have probably allowed them to “write off” most of the losses associated with Xbox and if it had ANYONE other than Microsoft overseeing and subsidizing the brand, the Xbox would’ve probably been axed YEARS AGO.
They definitely are not in it for the love of gaming. I would say that no company really is. They all just have different visions and strategies on how to make money. Sometimes a company's strategy has some overlap with what gamers want. Microsoft just appears to be the most blatant so other companies like Nintendo and Sony look like angels in comparison.

I’m not under any illusions that Nintendo or Sony truly care about me or anyone else beyond WHATEVER VALUE they believe they can extract from our wallets, but at least I’m getting games I want from them so it’s still a “mutually beneficial relationship.”

Xbox killed Xbox. Long before Satiya ever got involved it was Phil Spencer who just couldn't figure out how to manage his studios, dissapointing release after dissapointing release, broken promise after broken promise. Adding additional studios was always going to end badly for them because Phil is simply bad at his job

Whoever’s idea it was to buy Activision blizzard king was the one who jammed up Xbox, because that plan colossally backfired , it probably seemed like a good idea and good sell when they took it to the board of Microsoft, but they were banking on Gamepass blowing up behind it and they weren’t banking on a long drawn out acquisition with Sony fighting them on call of duty and the ftc fighting them over being anti competitive and they were forced to play ball which cut them off from what they thought was going to be a ton of exclusive revenue. Now that they are like 70 billion in Microsoft is all over that division to make sure it’s now going to be a massive red mark on them
I also don't think it helps that Phil seemed to push heavy for GP even when his own staff didn't see profitability. Where would they be right now if they had stopped at Zenimax and invested all that acquisition money into the studios and third party deals.
Investing $70 billion in their existing studios would have landed them in the same place, scrambling to recoup the investment.

@@toastyburger I disagree. Owning that much property makes the transition to publisher way too easy for MS to not consider. Imagine using not even a quarter of that money to get GTA VI on GP. You might not move consoles but the service would Definitely see a boost.
I know I give Xbox hell. That’s but that’s because I’m old enough to remember where they came from. The OG Xbox and 360 were apart of my favorite era in gaming. What I call: The Silver Age. Dreamcast, PS2, PS3, OG Xbox, 360, GameCube and Wii. The Golden Age being The NES, SNES, N64, Sega Master System, Genesis, PS1.
Being around so long I’ve seen em all come and go. So I was able to see the writing on the wall with clear glasses. It still brings little joy to be right. The gamer in me pains for diehard Xbox gamers.
I think this is when I stop investing in Xbox in terms of buying console stuff. On the PC side it’s a different story

Yeah, I've been around for them all too... my older brother had a nes, snes, sega genesis, and sega cd.. the first system i personally owned was sega saturn... I've always been a Playstation person and never played Xbox, but this sucks... around now, it seems like aaa gaming is losing traction in general with cheap mobile games taking a constant small stream of income... being a ps person, Konami comes to mind... taking $ away from aaa games in exchange for micro transactions and pachinko machines...

The writing is on the wall, Xbox as we know it is on its way out. Which is not ideal... being a PS gamer myself, it wasn't lost on me how the Xbox competition forced Sony to improve its services and offerings ever since the 360. A lot of what we take for granted now on PSN might not be there if Xbox had never existed. Just look at Nintendo for an example of a company that virtually has no competitor - great games, but everything else is basically stuck in the stone-age of the internet. PS+ is now an amazing value, especially since Sony revamped it under the impression of the Gamepass hype - another example of something that might not exist, or be much less attractive, if the competition hadn't been there.
Sony has a reputation for getting complacent when there's no one to kick their lazy ass, so it may not be a good thing overall if Microsoft turns Xbox into a pure 3rd party publisher. Maybe, as the Helldivers circus showed, it's the gamers that will have to keep Sony accountable and on their toes.
Nah, competiton is not always good. MS bought BGS > Sony panicked and bought Bungie, which was a colossal mistake. Just think about the irony: Bungie the company that sucks at live service was the one telling ND that their Faction live service sucked and Sony believed them.

What reputation? Were they - Sony- complacent during the PS and PS2 and PS4 generation, when they were dominating? Xbox bowing out is a good thing: We will end up with two different propositions between Sony and Nintendo...Different enough, complimentary enough, with enough competition for one's time and money. Same here (well, except for the current Series consoles because I bought the Xbox One X and played most of what it had to offer within 16 months and it’s been collecting dust SINCE).
I get SO FRUSTRATED when I tell people that Xbox needs a massive shake-up in its culture and management, only to be called a “salty pony” because I’m just like, “DUDE, I went and bought the FIRST XBOX with my FIRST PAYCHECK from my FIRST JOB EVER when minimum wage was like $4.75 an HOUR. You’re NOT going to sit there and TELL ME that I’ve NEVER LIKED Xbox and just want to see them fail” (well, more accurately, if they are going to CONTINUOUSLY DECLINE like this, I’d rather they just “take a bow” than become SOMETHING I DESPISE).

Where Microsoft has really messed up beyond the soulless layoffs and studio closures is that Xbox has no distinct identity anymore. It's identity that aligns people with a gaming platform and ultimately drives hardware, game, and subscription sales. And identity comes from artistic vision, not profit projections. It's why Destiny 2 wannabe Halo Infinite floundered while Hi-Fi RUSH soared. It's also how Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: Reach, and the original Gears of War trilogy built Xbox into the powerhouse it was in the Xbox 360 era. Not even the Red Ring of Death could take down Xbox during that period. THAT'S how much identity matters.

Honestly, I feel like NOW they’re trying to be more like Nintendo (but without the charm and creativity) which is why a lot of the games they promote now look like crappy Minecraft derivatives.
Xbox wasn't my first console. I was a genesis kid although I owned Nintendo consoles. I liked Saturn and loved Dreamcast. Then I was a PlayStation person for a long time. Of course I eventually owned an Xbox but even back then I knew I didn't like how MS operated when they tried to force themselves into the industry through buyouts and money peddling. The writing was on the wall back then. 360 was amazing for the first half of the generation. Then they stopped investing in Japanese studios and pretty much every other studio and just coasted on third parties and Kinect. They have never recovered since then

Have to say I have fond memories playing gears and fable when I was younger but after going through 2 Xbox 360s that ended up with the red ring of death I've gone Playstation and haven't looked back

It's been a bad game for good players for years now. The rigged SBMM matchmaking is so punishing it's near impossible to enjoy the game. You have a few good games in a row and it's all over with. The rest of he night you will be placed in the most brutal sweatfest lobbies you could imagine. Cronus and Xim are out of hand as well and run rampant in those high level lobbies.

I want to say all publishers have to do is let devs make great game, don’t rush them, don’t think about monetization first and fun/gameplay 8th on priority.
But they had great studios and managed to still mess things up. Cherry on top of it all is the guys at the top screwing up all get to stay and keep their jobs even after several mistakes.

One crazy thing that Microsoft almost closed the whole gaming division after the XB1 launch and now the Xbox Series is actually trailing behind One in hardware sales.
For me the first game I played on the xbox was ghost recon , then I went online it was amazing the first time
I was not happy when Microsoft brought Bethesda. At that time, I just recently got my PS5, and it had everything I wanted to play. I never felt Xbox cared about the types of games I enjoyed playing, so I never cared about owning an Xbox. Just to play some of my favorite Bethesda games and Hellblade, I did the unthinkable for me and brought an Xbox. I regret it because I was right Xbox doesn't care about the types of games I enjoy playing. My favorite games on Xbox gets abandon. I will only buy new Xbox games, renting on Game Pass maybe, if they are on PlayStation.
Maybe Phil and sataya should speak with Sarah Bond who on a Bloomberg interview very recently stated when asked about games on other platforms was still towing the title by title basis....hardly a glowing endorsement for full multi plat....

They did, it was called the Dreamcast. It ran on Windows CE. This made game creation for the console much easier than the previous console, the Sega Saturn. I loved the Dreamcast but it couldn't compete against the juggernaut called the PS2. Sega canceled the Dreamcast and left the console making business in 2001, The same year the original Xbox was released.
MS becoming a netflix type publisher is certain. We're also living in a world where Sony is pivoting closer to publishing compared to their yesteryears with PC, especially with how increasingly successful Sony is on STEAM, they'd be silly not to lean further there as well. The even bigger question with MS is what the landscape looks like going forward in the near future. Without Xbox as competition for Sony, do people actually believe Sony is going to spend big first party bucks competing with no one? What's their incentive to spend as much or more now? I can't imagine it's a better world for gamers as a whole. It's undeniable that competition breeds excellence...so without it?. Who could fill Xbox's shoes if they abandon the Xbox console?

Xbox getting rid of studios who in the past have created great games just because one game fails is stupid and how tango gameworks brought them a great artistic platformer rhythem game which delivered due to fandom for the game i know sales didn't workout and thats down to game pass if gamepass was games that arent first party day 1 i believe they would make sales and a year or more after release then add those games to the game pass or monthly games like ps does

Microsoft killed Xbox? More like: Spencer put his chips on red, even numbers, 23, 4, 5, 12...and the silver ball landed on "0". He never made sense...killing the middle-man (retail) by pushing digital even more with GP, while being fine paying 30% to Gabe and devaluing exclusivity in the process. Spencer wanted it all and got none. I know, life isn't fair...good guy Phil looses it all, while devil incarnate Bobby Kottick is probably laughing on his yacht parked somewhere near the Bahamas as he was able to sell the shit-hole ABK, that only lasted for that long because he was running it the way HE did, for 70bn dollars.

Got the Xbox day one back in November 2001. Been in love with the brand since. Until the end of the Xbox 360 era. But my first was the Atari 5200 and yes, had Colico Vision, Turbo Grfx 16, Sega Genesis, and every Nintendo console up to the Wi. But my main has always been Xbox since 2001. Such a shame how these people destroyed this brand.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the Xbox one launch. What the hell were they doing? Why wouldn't you want a ps4 over an Xbox one? Phil said it best, they lost the digital library generation. People aren't going to magically leave behind all of the money they spent in the PlayStation store over the years. If Xbox goes away, I put the blame solely on the Xbox one... They had so much momentum coming off of the OG and 360 and completely destroyed the brand. And it sucks to see because Xbox was a big part of my childhood. Playing Halo 1-3 with the boys were some of the best gaming memories ever..
Don’t forget Kinect damaged the 360 brand.

A thing not brought out a lot is back in the xbox/360 - ps2/ps3 era the experience you got on both boxes were completely different due to different catalogs and without crossplay people had more incentive to own both boxes. However since ps4 xb1 era the catalog of games became nearly the same but PlayStation just had more.Phil right 1 11 out 10 game will not get people to buy a xbox but 3-7 exclusives a year that people want to play that I can't play on pc or playstation would at least get me to buy your box.

I think phil and co are terrible. So if satya has had enough and taking the reigns i would warn you not to bet against him. If nothing else he will make the gaming division more profitable then its ever been. He will be ruthless so i feel bad for devs and studios who cant deliver. And what that means for the xbox brand? I dont really care. if that meams they go 3rd party, or this pc hybrid whatever. As long as we still get bethesda, Microsoft, Activision games i dont care what box i play them on. Xbox as we know it is probably dead but thats ok. Change is needed.
Xbox had no choice but to evolve because of the huge sales of PlayStation. So it was a case of sink or swim.

At this point Microsoft just needs to cancel the Xbox consoles and allow all "xbox" games onto pc/other consoles. Microsoft just needs to throw in the towel and become a publisher for studios but not EA.

Was always a sony PS consumer but it really sux how a buy of billions fooked a good company and put it in the dirt. Whats the worst thing is Sony wis already monopolizing making crazy moves against the consumers because they know there on top with no real competitors after xbox.
Halo! When I think of Xbox. I think of so much of many bad games. Halo a shooter that could have done much better. But didn't do so. I like Xbox for a few games that are not on Gamecube but could be at the time. If continued. I only like the original Xbox for dvd usage and music cd usage and Dynasty Warriors 5.
Honestly Xbox isn't going anywhere. It's still a multimillion dollar company. Let's be real. They are going to have to hit rock bottom before it's gets better. But once they start pumping out AAA titles(you know games that people actually wanna play that are actually good) they will start to see sales again. Until then though you will see more lay offs and potentially more lesser studios shut down.

Oh yes MS is definitely in the room and i cant blame them. Theyve given him 10yrs and xbox is doing worse now than it was. Theyve spent billions and they want their return on it.

The original Xbox and then the Xbox 360 were great because the teams were comprised of actual gamers. People who were just as passionate about our favorite past time as we are. Now it is ran by suits who don’t care about anything but money and figures about projections about how they can get more money. It’s sad.
I'm a solid PlayStation owner today, but back when I was 20-21, I bought into the Xbox360 because of Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Fable. But as Elder Scrolls became available on PlayStation, I just found more and more IPs more attractive on PlayStation. I also saw how toxic the Xbox gaming community was and wanted nothing to do with it. Ever since then I've only ever seen how horrible and cancerous Microsoft has been for gaming

As somone who left xbox in 2014 and yea playstation 1 started me off but i always had a xbox up to 360 but i left in 2014 for pc and ps4 i just want xbox to be better its sad man i love the evil within now ill never get a part 3😢
