Thnks for posting this video. I lived in the Hayes housing area when I was stationed there from 1981 to 1986. Got housing around 1983. It sure looks different now.
I just watched your tour of fort ord. My family and I lived there from like 85 to 91 you went right throw our neighborhood. We lived at 151 Okinawa rd. when I googled it it looked like our house was gone.So thank you for the tour.
My wife and I lived on Fort Ord from 1990-1993. We lived way out in the east garrison in the newer housing. We were the last family on our street to move out. What a shame they closed it down,we loved it there.
Where you are is not military housing for bachelor or single military soldiers. It is not post quarters or any type of official military housing. It was an apartment complex that was built on the back side of the golf course. The only people that could rent there were military. But they paid rent. It was an apartment complex on post for military families only. It was called Sunbury village or something like that. Three of my friends lived there. I say again this was not military quarters for single soldiers, nor was it "Luxury Military Housing".
i was born and stationed at fort ord that was the best time of my life.I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY WOULD CLOSE IT DOWN AFTER BUILDING ALL THE NEW HOUSING THERES A LOT OF MILITARY BASES THEY COULD HAVE CLOSED AND LEFT FORT ORD OPEN
I was with Bravo 7th S&T in the mid 1980s to 1989 there at Fort Ord. I remember having to wear a beeper & you could be called up at any time (DRB). While others got breaks I never got one cause of my MOS was 55 B (ammo/explosives) and I was the only one they had. FINELLY I got a break after being on it for a long time non stop, because I got sick of all the phoney call ups and over heard some officers laugher about how they had us going. MOST OFFICERS THERE WERE GREAT!!! Don't get me wrong but you always have a few not so 'cool' ones. But there were alot of nice times there and I will never forget the times I spent there at Ft Ord and Fort Dix and other closed down Forts now.
Brings back some memories. Lived in Marshall Park off of Elbe Road from '82-'89. Moved to Fort Carson, CO in July of '89. Attended Marshall Elementary and Fitch Middle School. I miss it so much!! Wasn't there a Shoppette off Normandy and is it still there? Still have memories of going there with friends and picking up the teeny bopper magazines with Funyons and Hubba Bubba soda.
Robin all of the shoppettes are closed. Well that is not exactly correct. One of the Seaside city counsel members reopened the one on Imjin Rd. He opened that one because there is a University on the old fort and it took over much of the housing near there. I also went to Marshall for the 3rd grade but then we moved to Marina. I lived there through graduation.
Robin K Hi Robin, I went to Fitch Middle School about the same time you did as well. Not sure if we knew each other. My name is Shannon Parsons. I went to Stillwell Ele.
Shan Parsons The name sounds familiar. My last name was Kirby then. Used to be friends with Gwen Stacey. Don't know if that sounds familiar at all. I went to Fitch in 88-89. I was only there for 6th grade.
Robin K, I live in Marshall Park, as well on (Kerling Rd.) my old house is still there and I met the family that brought the house. I miss it so much. Btw, I went to Fitch, and Seaside High😁
Basic training Aug-Oct 69. Then Stationed there from June 81 thru Oct 83. 327 Carpenter Court. Right across the highway from Fritze Army Airfield. Loved Ft Ord!!
I was a district manager for The Herald. I covered Seaside and Marina. I don't remember Carpenter St. Was it on Ft Ord. Ft Ord has mostly been cut up in Seasise, Marina, and Monterey. Part of Abrams Park has been demolished and new houses built. Imjin has been extended through to Hwy 1 near where the 12th St gate was. The area near 12th St has been converted into an outdoor mall and medical center. There is also a new VA center there. If you take 2nd Av from there there are new houses, apartments and a hotel. Beyond there is CSU Monterey Bay. They have taken over or demolished many of the old barracks across from the bowling alley. The bowling alley, bank, and other buildings are gone. They expanded the stadium and added an aquatics center and sported center. The area where the old prison was is now a concrete business. The commissary, PX, and credit union are still there. Oh and the gas station. The hospital has been coverted into a secure facility for the DOD.
@@skipstreet In 1983 Our quarters were 3 minutes from the hangar where D 2-10 Cav's hangar was. Come out of the parking lot cross at the highway and it was the first street on the right.
i was stationed there from 86 to 89, went back in september of 2014, monterey seaside carmel hadnt changed that much, i was happy about that , but fort ord, my company area still intact, the main px still used by the presidio, looked the same, saw dirty dancing at barker theater at the px, wow where did the time go. was the best time of my life, would love to move back there, im from akron ohio, i was in hsc 7th s and t bn, captain toomey was my co
Thank you for posting this. I'll never forget Fort Ord. Our motto was "Silent and Deadly". I guess they've taken the 'biggie' (BOOMS) stuff like what used to be next to the hospital in the huge circle out by now (?) plus the other 3 (?). Can't put what they were or still are in out right writing.
If you want to know I can tell you if you give my more information. Were you a child or a soldier? What school did you go to or what other streets do you remember leaving the house? What do you remember seeing on the way to or from the neighborhood. I lived in the area most of my life.
wow brings back some crazy memories as a kid. i grew up here was an amazing time i still have nightmares of the that hill going into stilwell and that that horrible earthquack i think in 87 during world series oh and i cant forget the teenager that smoked a cig in the closet and burned the whole house down and she died was so scary and sad if u see this chris and albert wanted to say HAI!! and ty for this video was great thinking of old times and climbing trees
Rytannia Shane that earthquake was Oct 17, 1989 @ 5:04p.m... I remember that day very well, and I lived at 502 Washington cir, I was in 4th grade at Patton elementary... Very scary day.
I was married at Fort Ord in 1973, it is such a shame to see our Military bases close down, especially when we need them now more then ever, it's very sad to see it all gone. The government needs to bring life back to the bases, it is great for our military and our economy, many people (civilians included) lost their income. Who had the bright idea to close our military bases anyway?
Gina Jenkins the base closures came about because of the break up of Russia. I don't know about other bases but most of Ft Ord has been donated to the state, the city of Marina, the city of Seaside, the city of Del Rey Oaks, and the city of Monterey.
My Dad was stationed at Ft. Ord in late 1973 until his untimely death Oct. 1974. We lived on Washington Circle and I attended Marina Del Ray Elementary before moving back to the East Coast after his death. 3 years ago I visited and actually found a way onto the abandoned properties and actually went inside my old house. Brought back alot of memories.
Eugene, Thank you for the video. I lived in Ft. Ord at 90 Okinawa Rd. from 1957 to 1965. I attended Seaside Elementary, Stillwell, Fitch and Washington Jr. High. You mentioned Okinawa Rd. in the video. Was that in Hayes Park? The street names have all changed now. I will be in California this summer and I plan to take a tour of Ft. Ord. Thanks for the video.
There is no Seaside Elementary now. Seaside has grow quite a bit I am sure from the time you were there. There is also no Washington Jr. High that I am aware of. There was a Martin Luther King Jr. High on Broadway that changed to a middle school but I believe that name has been changed now too. Okinawa Rd. is in Stillwell park. Some of the street names are the same from the 70's and 80's but some have either been moved or renamed. For example, if you remember Buna Rd. and Buna Loop they have been moved to the other side of Monterey Rd. Monterey Rd. is the road that enters Ft. Ord passing Seaside High School and comes through Coe Av gate.
Eugene Street In my video I speak about the new housing that has been built but after I made the video they also changed more of the housing in Stilwell park. Near Monterey Rd. and Normandy Rd. they pulled all the walls off the houses but left up all the studs. They then replaced the floors, walls, and roof and now the homes are basically new but they look much nicer. Would would not know they were once military housing.
There's a Bayonet CT and a Bayonet Cir. As I recall the CT is next to the golf course and the Cir is in Preston Park. I do not recall making a video there.

Why and when did they tear down STILWELL HALL ? How sad. That was first built by grants, also from soldiers putting money to it, Bob Hope & Bing Cosby helped raise money & gave money to building it and it took over a million dollars to build. The last time I was there people were roller skating on the still beautiful ball room floor. I spent time out on the small patio. I always wanted to see that building again but never got back out there.
Over time the ocean was pulling the sand of the beach. That started to erode the area behind Stillwell hall and there was a risk of it falling into the ocean.
I'm 15 years old and I'm a semi professional surfer. My dad is PCS here in may and I'm wondering how is the waves? Like I'm coming from oahu hawaii, and I never been to Cali, thanks
I did BCT at Fort Ord in August to October 1968. As much as I hated BCT and our #$%@ drill sergeants, I loved Fort Ord. It was a beautiful post. It's a shame to see what's become of it.
GravelGrunt since I made this video some things have changed. They have added homes near the gulf course, near 12th street gage, and going out Imjin Rd. There is a new movie theater, VA hospital, and a few more businesses. There's also a VA cemetery. I in North Dakota now but I hear they are demolishing some of the buildings.
Draftee Feb67! I thought this was a super fund site? Go figure! Oh well! Rest in pieces Ord D-1-1! BTW... I win! Outlived ya despite good old Lyndon's best efforts! Bet this place is haunted big time!
Thanks for posting this. My father was stationed there from 70 to 73. We lived at 115 Okinawa Rd.
We lived at 201 Okinawa Rd from 70-73 also!
We lived at 211 Okinawa Rd from 84-90. 😊

omg great tour Sir...I say sir as an NCOIC of a long time ago based at the Hospital...
The hospital was turned over to the DOD. They do some secret stuff there.
I was there from 90-93, C Co 127th Signal Battalion. I really miss the area...
87 Corregidor Rd! Ice plants everywhere!
I think that was Stillwell.
Eugene Street , Was just representing my old street.
I lived at 166 Corregidor Aug 69 to April 1970 House overlooked Bay.
Used to lived on house 111 CORREGIDOR back in 86 until February 1994
Basic training Aug-Oct 69. Then Stationed there from June 81 thru Oct 83. 327 Carpenter Court. Right across the highway from Fritze Army Airfield. Loved Ft Ord!!
Fritze is now a civilian airport. They have a skydiving school and i believe MPC has a police academy driving course located there.
