This amazing multi-talented artist wrote or was a co-writer on many incredible heart touching songs. Such as ***End of Day***
Jonghyun’s Solo Discography is one for the books.. seriously! He played with genres, played with his instrument, his voice.. and I tell you he plays with his vocals… a lot!
I personally wouldn't describe him as operatic - I think it's more accurate to say that Jonghyun has a very good open tone, which is to say he creates a lot of space in his mouth/throat without tightening up when he sings, which leads to that resonant, rich, and "rounded" tone. It's a fundamental technique to good singing of many different styles, not just opera! And he had such a good understanding of how to modify his tone and registers to achieve different effects. I wouldn't be surprised if he could sing very well in a more classical/choral style if he had trained in that style specifically. He absolutely had the fundamentals and raw talent.
My favourite part of Don’t let me go is Key’s rap into his high note … they all rap by the way. Jonghyun raps quite a bit in his solos. Minho (main rapper) and Key (lead rapper) are the rappers in SHINee.
Unfortunately, we didnt get too hear Jjong do opera. But as you can see, Jjongs voice is an instrument. He can do it all. He even did a metal like screamo song ie Internet war. He raps too in his solo albums. Key WAS officially lead rapper, lead dancer, and vocalist. But of course you can already see that positions doesnt apply to SHINee anymore.
Skeleton Flower is one of the many reasons Jjong takes my breath away. He read about a flower whose white petals become translucent when they get wet, and out of that created this haunting, otherworldly, painful but beautiful song that's like nothing else anywhere. He wrote the lyrics for virtually all of his solo work (possibly all?), composed or collaborated on the composition of nearly every song, and produced many of his songs. His creativity - whether you're reading the lyrics or listening to the way he plays with percussion and all the other components of the music and with multiple layers of his vocals - is off the charts. If you go deeper in his solo discography, you'll hear more of his many, many voices. (Shinee gets most of the power vocals from him, although they do show up in his solo work too.) Minho and Key are often a one-two punch in Shinee's raps. You'll find many examples of Key rapping as you keep going. Thank you so much for sharing your Shinee journey.

It would be great if you guys reacted to one of Jonghyun's solo albums. He has 5 albums: Base (2015) 1st Mini Album Story Op. 1 (2015) A collection album (skeleton flower is from this album) She Is (2016) 1st Full Album Story Op. 2 (2017) A collection album Poet | Artist (2018) 2nd Full Album. The Story Ops albums consist of songs that he wrote based on his own experience and the listeners from his Blue Night Radio. They sent him letters and he read all of them and got some inspiration from them. He wrote all of his songs on his own and produced probably 96% of them. She Is (2016) actually got praised a lot because it was the first time an idol wrote and produced an entire album on their own. Also as a Jonghyun biased, I just want to say thank you for reacting and listening to his music. Some reactors that I've seen are even afraid of mentioning him just because he's not there anymore (or they don't even bother learning about him). So thank you for "keeping him alive" in a sense.

So glad you included Jjong's Skeleton Flower, it shows his incredible song writing skills in poetry and production like no other, and that in such a young age too. SHINee's ballads can't be missed, so please react to more. Key is together with Minho the main rapper in the group, and his skills is some of the best in the industry. In his Gasoline, there is that technique few can hit so well like he does, and he always deliver with spot on attitude. But what is more incredible, is that he can do it all, hitting the highest falsetto in belting, or deep, full chest voice. I like to argue that all SHINee members has the most recognizable and distinguished vocal tones in the industry in a group, each one of them can be easily recognized among others- if that would be a showcase. But together they are the best harmonized vocals in kpop, and together they make magic!
This is the song that finally hooked me on SHINee. I had heard of PSY and BTS and found it to be interesting and catchy, but nothing caught my ear as something I would want to hear again and again. Diphylleia Grayi is an outstanding work of art in lyrics, music, singing, and performance. It stands apart from everything else, and is almost more of a song of worship than anything else. I then moved onto their ballads and finally their "hit" songs. Now I'm a Shawol to the core. I own the novella as well, and it is beautifully written. It's more a work of "long form poetry" than a novel. There are some good translations online.

I am so incredibly late to your reactions but I am very happy you guys reacted to Skeleton Flower! Last November I got a skeleton flower tattooed with the phrase "수고해거요" (you did well, something jjong wrote in his last texts to his sister "tell me I did well") when I was in Korea in honor of him and this song which is my favorite of his. This song means a lot to me and I rarely see people react to it so this was a very pleasant surprise ^ - ^
I might be a little late, but no, Jonghyun didn't do opera even though theres clips of him of doing "opera runs", he went into training his voice as much as he can from the start and took his voice as an instrument learning to do as much as he could and it shows.
