  • A Yugoslavian copy of a Polydor record with Paul Godwin Orchester playing Argentina, sung by Arpolin Numa.
Paul Godwin: He was born on March 28, 1902, in Sosnowitz (Russian Empire; now Poland), his real name was Pinchas Goldfein. Early recordings on the POLYPHON label gave the name "Tanz-Orchester Goldfein". He studied the violin at the Warsaw Conservatory under Stanisław Barcewicz.[1]
At the age of 20 he formed his own dance band in Berlin. Between 1926 and 1933 his orchestra Tanz-Orchester Paul Godwin recorded a countless number of records for European labels, mostly for Berliner Gramophone. Many recording singers were backed by his orchestra at that time. His band performed current hits and longtime favorites of various styles: foxtrots, waltzes, tangos, polkas. Occasionally Paul Godwin recorded classical pieces, with his full orchestra as well as the "Paul Godwin-Trio" or "Paul Godwin Quartet". Due to the variety of their repertoire, his orchestra recorded under various monikers: Tanz-Orchester Godwin, Paul Godwin's Jazz Symphoniker, Paul Godwin-Ensemble, Paul Godwin & sein Weekend-Orchester etc. In 1929-1933 he turned to cinema and provided many UFA motion pictures with hugely popular soundtracks.
Paul Godwin and his orchestras were enormously popular in Europe at the time: the recent report stated that within the ten-year period (1923-1933) nine millions of his records were sold.
In early 1933 Paul Godwin moved to the Netherlands where he remained for the rest of his life. After the war Godwin formed a classical violin trio with which he performed until the 1970s. He died on December 9, 1982 in Driebergen in the Netherlands.
Fanny Gordon: Gordon was born in 1914 in Yalta. After the Bolshevik Revolution her family emigrated to Poland. Faiga wrote poetry and composed songs for Warsaw cabarets and music theatres.
One of Gordon's most famous songs, composed around 1931, was Przy samowarze ("By the Samovar"), performed by Zula Pogorzelska and Tadeusz Olsza at the Morskie Oko theatre in the revue "Podróż na księżyc" (Journey To The Moon) in April of 1931. Andrzej Włast wrote the lyrics in 1931 and the song became an international hit, recorded by German and American dance bands. Later a record company asked her to write Russian words to the melody, and the result was «У самовара».
Her other hits included the tango "Skrwawione serce" ("My Bleeding Heart") sung by Polish "queen of tango" Stanisława Nowicka, the foxtrot "Abdul Bej" based on oriental motifs, sung by Tadeusz Faliszewski and Albert Harris, and "Siemieczki", called "The Polish Bublitshki". Her tango "Nietoperze" ("The Bats"), with lyrics about those who hunt for love at night written by Szer-Szeń (pen-name of the prominent Polish poet, Jan Brzechwa). Her "Bal u starego Joska" ("Party at the Old Josel's"), also known as "Bal na Gnojnej" ("Party At the Dung Lane"), lyrics by Andrzej Włast, was intended as a send-up of Warsaw "apasz" (underworld) ballads and became so famous it is now often cited as the first Warsaw underworld folksong. After the war the song was often performed by Stanisław Grzesiuk. In 1933, she wrote the operetta Jacht miłości (Yacht of Love) with a hit, the tango "Indie" (also performed in the Netherlands and the United States as "New York Baby").
Before World War II Gordon lived alternately in Warsaw and the USA. She was trapped in Warsaw at the outbreak of the war but escaped to Wilno and eventually to Leningrad, where she continued to compose under the names Fania Markovna Kviatkovskaya and Fania Kwiatkowski (Polish: Fania Kwiatkowska). She died in Leningrad in 1991.

Great music! Do you have a personal collection that this all comes from? I can't imagine trying to digitize old records like this, but you provide MANY smiles with your efforts. Thank you so much for putting this out there for all to enjoy.
