I’d like to add a tip … once you’ve painted the big shapes and have done the block-in, drop your brushes and go do something else. Walk the dog, get a cup of coffee, watch a Netflix, anything. Just get away from the painting for a while and only then come back and continue. You’d be amazed how many things you then see which you want to get corrected before diving into more detailed work.
One thing about self portraits is that we are sho used to seeing ourselves in the mirror that painting from a photo can be unsettling. I've seen many posts from people who are unhappy with what they painted from a photo. After telling them to look at it in a mirror, they understand. We are not symmetrical.
Enjoy all your videos Chris! "I'll just paint what I see"! 🤣👍 LOL my own self talk ! Lean over Fat tip was especially helpful! Thank you for sharing! Your humor is coming through in videos too! 😅
Hi Chris, I am a long-time subscriber of your channel. Maybe you could address on your next video the pros and cons of practicing with small canvas vs a large canvas. Thanks!
I've been following you for about a year since I started painting. You are so helpful. I have been doing landscapes but just started a portrait so this was very timely. I think your self portrait is one of my favorite paintings you have done. The colors, brush strokes, and it perfectly captures the intensity of an artist. So far my portrait is going well. (crosses fingers)
Oh my gosh you've grown so much as a painter it's really crazy possibly because you've been teaching so hard you have a really really honed that craft. I mean it's been a very short time. Clocking hours. Thank you. For teaching me this
This is absolutely stunning and beautiful! You are very talented artist!Great sharing and your technique is just amazing Thank you for this beautiful sharing! Enjoyed watching your whole process! Greetings from Canada!
I’m trying to get into the AP drawing class next year after only taking a year of art (I’m currently a freshman). I showed my portfolio, and today I was told that by Monday (it’s Friday right now) I have to draw a 1 point perspective, a 2 point perspective, and a self portrait in a traditional art style with values and a background. I’m so shocked that I’m basically in after I draw those, but I’m still super happy. I’m just here to start with the self portrait
I really enjoyed your video especially the tips, tricks and different techniques that you used, that some artist were never know or they’ve just know till they watch the video❤️💯
You have a wonderful way of teaching. Thanks for all of your tips! I just started painting portraits and your tips defiantly help. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for another great video. With your help I've transitioned from acrylic to oil and, to my great surprise, even had a couple of decent attempts at portraits. Your basic principles give me a lot of confidence - i.e. stick to shapes of lights and darks and you can paint anything. I'd love to see a video on how you would go about painting a group of people. Not a whole bunch of little far away people, but something more like a group around a table. That seems hard to me. I had a look through your archive and couldn't find anything.. maybe it just doesn't make for a good composition?
Great video full of inspiration. I love to paint portraits but never occur to do a self portrait, sounds intimidating but I will do it! Thanks so much. Blessings and take care.
Great ,GREAT tips!! so funny, I've been studying the planes with a similar faceless model😂and yes, I agree with your test students! INVALUABLE exercise and so much fun!!
Could you discuss how to use warm and cool temperature of each color? Some have said to try not to mix the warm and cools because it neutralizes the color shift. For example, ultramarine blue is warm but pthalo blue is cool so does that mean ultramarine blue is forward from alizarine crimson which is a cool red? What is your experience with this concept? Thanks so much for sharing your experience and opinion, enjoy your videos!
Love watching your videos! How would one be able to use the face model like you do? Is it through Photoshop? If so, how do you use it? Thanks Go get painting!!
I’d like to ask, what do guys think is better. For an absolute beginner to practice oil painting online through a course? Or to practice in real life through a course as well?? Because I’m lost and I don’t know which one is better :)
Hi, these questions are not intended to ofend but to clarify myself; What is the point of painting from a photo that has already captured your face, your facial expression, your eyes?... Isn't it just an unnecesary layer of "interestingness" you're adding? I think the photo you chose was already interesting on its own and was a great work of photography. I can't help to think you're not painting yourself, but a photo of yourself and, as I see it, those are far from being the same. (Go to 5:15) Also, where is the line that separates art from just tracing something?, Isn't it the same to use a tool to copy the lenght of a few shapes than to copy them all? Does it make it less of a copy to do half of the work? Does it need to be made freehand or "free-eye" to be art? These are questions I ask to myself and I'd really like to know your opinion on these subjects. Thank you.
And? Dear Coach? Did you Study formally? Or did you simply have one Great Teacher in middle School or High School? Respectfully submitted for your time and consideration Gregg Oreo Long Beach CA Etats Unis
Sorry, I have to question the teachings of any painting coach whose own paintings still make the basic mistake of adding too much white into all colors used. For my eye, this is an amateur error, actually a bad habit, and should be corrected.

Can your portrait painting course be applied to acrylics?

my art GCSE is tomorrow and i have zero experience in portraiture 😻😻
I need to try painting upside down
Remember to only turn the pictures upside-down. You yourself should stay right-side up.
I wanted to ask. If I become a 5 dollar patreon do I have access to all of you tutorials?
You have access to half and a new one every other week
Okay, thanks
Do you enlarge the photo?
Hola, como se si la luz es fría o cálida. A luz cálida sombra fría
What is a Plane/plain?
A surface.
I just stumbled upon your channel and I have to say: daamn you're handsome 😅 (you're painting skill is pretty impressive too though) 😆
You've missed explaining the hair sir
