i feel bad for fuzzy his family sound like nice people
his mistake was to declare his retirement BEFORE his final trip thats how they get ya. You gotta declare your final trip after you get back.
I agree. C'mon retirees wake up. 😅
@@charonstyxferryman and the captain of the Andrea Doria, and the captain of Edmund Fitzgerald.
I literally laughed out loud! That's how "they" get ya 🤣🤣...indeed, life is about finding ways to avoid "they" gettin us 😏
@cherry bomb I think I saw this statement in land and air transport as well. Disaster sometimes come when someone who spent they life working in this industry (clearly experienced) said that this gonna be their last trip.
@cherry bomb I can't be more agree with your statement. So many tragedies happen when they're pushed to meet their schedule.

Two things I learned:
1. Never, ever convert a shrimper.
2. Sometimes you get the fish, sometimes the fish get you.
Exactly. It is not like a car. Nobody should do massive modifications to aircraft and vessels. In a car the worst is it breaking down. A plane falls. A ship sinks. It is not worth risking it.
@@thekraken1173 in fairness, I see a lot of people get into bad spots with their cars too. I worked as a damage appraiser for an insurance company and I saw three totals where people tried to DIY new wheels, tires or racing brakes and ended up in totals...
But yeah, a vessel is not something you want to mess with...don't know why people would.
Remeber kids in russia fish catches “you”
@@thekraken1173 Modifications to ships are perfectly safe when done correctly. The aircraft carrier USS Langley was built as a collier. MS Stockholm (yes, the one that sunk the Andrea Doria) was recently converted from an ocean liner to a cruise ship. Several cargo ships have had their length extended to increase carrying capacity.
Same with aircraft. Think of the bombers that were converted to commercial aircraft or firefighting planes after World War 2. Or the fact that passenger Boeing 747s are regularly converted to cargo models.
They know the risk
If fish could talk, the ones from the first story would have quite a story! “Man, I was IN the boat!”

I have an extreme phobia for water... So scary finding yourself in the middle of the sea 800 miles from where humans live.
22.30 min......I know what u mean...one of my.most scaries things....
I freak myself out, thinking about being in the middle of know where ocean . and a mile below. Like worst case, I could be there😵. Irrational* thought I know🤷
Same here. If I can't see the bottom its even worse because I wonder wtf is down there.
I know i'm gonna sound retard*d, but ever since I was a kid I always wash my face last in the shower. Having to close my eyes while water is on my face freaks me the f*ck out, lol. I do swim as long as I can see the bottom, just had an in-ground pool installed, but I payed extra for lots of extra lights, I don't care if that the contractor thought it was a waste of money, I want to see whats around me at night. Accept that the pool lights have a black light feature that my daughter is very found of at night, no money on the planet can get me to get in when those things are on, sounded like a good Idea during the design. The first pool party we had people over, we watched Jaws on the projector, once the lights went off on the pool I got the hell out, lol.
The story of The Indianapolis ship from back in the 40s would be my worst nightmare, I would've just stayed on the ship and call it a day. Those poor guys..
you ever been on a plane?
Why all the mindless comments about this not being aviation-related? It's a fascinating look into maritime safety. Apx 33 cargo ships are lost each year, almost none are reported by the media. Each ship will have between 15 and 30+ crew. Many are poorly maintained and employ low-cost crews while sailing under 'flags of convenience' .. that's to say, flags of countries who don't give a damn about the safety standards of those ships, avoiding taxes and avoiding having to pay decent salaries to well-qualified crews is the priority. Surely this is worth bringing to the attention of the media ?
Omg, never thought about this, but it makes so much sense. This goes for ships transporting any and everything, right?
@@fromeveryting29
Some more than others, aging bulk carriers are at particular risk due to the nature of their work/cargos.
33 a year? That’s actually a lot.
I am an aviation nerd but I completely agree this is really interesting
This should be told to the countless people on cruise ships. You are under the jurisdiction of the 'flag state'. That's one of many reasons I refuse to set my feet on board of a cruise liner.
Great stories but missing the probable cause and the final conclusion!
why leave us hanging
I only know in 13:38, the Norman Atlantic Disaster, one of the trucks that ran by it's own diesel generator in a densely cramped vehicle deck 4 emits a spark that started the fire. The wind from the winter storm carries alot of oxygen and it feeds the fire on the vehicle deck, making it spreading fast and out of control. As a result, 30 people died, 12 of which as a direct result of the fire while the rest have lost into the sea while trying to reach the life boats (which deployed early before ordered by the captain).

You'll find that on the "Smithsonian Why They Sank Channel"
If you google the name of the ship, you will get some answers. The Lady Mary was in fact not retrofitted properly contrary to what the video shows, Smithsonian Channel probably didn’t want to be accused of racism.
This is like watching a comedian and never getting the punch line.
Leave everyone hanging--- that's not right
I agree.
It’s because they try and get you interested to buy the full episode
I agree. This is the longest clickbait video I ever sat through. I foolishly assumed that they broke the stories into segments and would circle back and wrap up the endings of each one. Very disappointed.

Shipwrecks are always sad, but when all hands are lost, it's tragic. I have immense respect for those who put out to sea. I keep you all in my prayers, and wish you calm seas and good fortune 🌹⚓

I’m glad they mix in when it’s proven a captain wasn’t at fault, Fuzzy and Bobo worked hard on their pride and joy 🥺💔
Why do you show disaster and cut it off half way thru
Being a retired Coastie. I had to laugh at the way the people playing the Coast Guard officers wore their uniforms. The only time we ever had the top button of our shirts buttoned up is when we were wearing ties.
I'm planning to be a seamen or aviator any tips? and I give you a salute .
The Coast Guard is the hero of all who put out to sea, of fishermen, boaters, merchant seamen, everyone who braves the waves. Bless you for your service. 🌹⚓

Interesting that the Smithsonian does not respond to this.
You dropped this 🍼
I am commenting on the last story of the ferry running into the dock. That's what happens when you're too heavy-handed on the helm. You cannot go from ahead to astern under load, the transmission will stay stuck in gear if you just slam the thing into reverse, you have to wait for the engines RPM's to slow down before switching from ahead to astern or vise versa.
When he was talking about the Darbyshire wreck being spread out over a large area, I immediately thought collision with a larger ship, but the implosion/explosion of the double hull makes more sense. Thanks for the video!
Man seafaring is dangerous as all hell. Would like to see more though
The Queen of the North Canadian ship captain was incredible. 🇨🇦
I love this series thank you so much
I read the transcript of the Faro's communications as the data recorder was recovered. The last moments the ship was on its side and the woman was pleading with the captain "You won't leave me will you?!" then it went under.....chilling last words. An unnecessary tragedy. RIP
I worked on a 118 ft.boat called the ocean pacer. It shouldn't have ever gone out. We were dragging for scallops and by the time we were done water was coming into the boat through the lighting . We had 4" of water inside. That was scary and I didn't go back out with them.
Seeing this video in my recommended brings back memories. I watched the 1st season, and I wish I could watch more Smithsonian videos, but unfortunately my account no longer exists :(
The locating beacon you mention is amazing. The first satellite was launched sometimes in the 70's by the Soviet Union and at that time I was a founding member of a civillian volunteer search and rescue group and I said we should test it. After a lot of red tape I set off an ELT during a thunderstorm near high voltage power lines. As the satellite came over the horizon a teletype started spewing out latitude and longitude somewhere in Ottawa and it was about 100 miles off. As the satellite rose above the horizon it narrowed the location to about 10 miles. Considering that was about 50 years ago and the radio signal was just above background noise to the satellite that was impressive to me. With more satellites and improvements to the technology the accuracy is far better. Years later while doing other work for the government i was told my record shows I was the first civilian to transmit a radio signal to a Russian satellite.
The first satellite was in 1940-1950 era and all it do was beeping back to station. So I will give this a cap. But might be true but other satellite
I remember the Arctic Rose news breaking on Deadliest Catch. It's always tough seeing the reactions from the Deadliest Catch crews when one of their fellow ships go down.
It must have been pure terror for these fishermen, just horrific. Wow, it is always heartbreaking when ships shrinks along with the lost of lives. Terrifying! I don’t know what I would do in situations like these ones on this video...... I would have a heart attack and die! A very interesting video truly awesome. I’ve seen every episode of Air Disasters. I LOVE Disasters at sea. I wish they would make at least 12 episodes per season. With as many ships that go down every year (I heard once it’s an average of one ship per week, year after year) there should be no shortage of material!
The fact that you like to see people dying, is just sick.
@@171trains actually that is the one thing I don’t like about it and sometimes ff through it. I love learning how they figure out what went wrong and changes made as a result. Not the part about people dying. I hate that part.

Lets get this cannle to 100k
Still an interesting video, why is everyone whining?
I remember the Lady Marry sinking. Though they were from Carolina, they sailed out of the Middle Throughfare area just north of Cape May. This is a huge commercial fishing area. Ship and crew are listed on the Cape May Fishermans memorial. I am a retired Merchant Mariner, I worked Rivers and Great Lakes. I would go nowhere on board without my Gumby Suit when on the lakes. I would have sounded emergency bells right after I noticed trouble. When we trained for evacuation it was never announced, and happened at all hours, and every ten days. Training never stops.
I’m betting no one searched for exciting stories about ships with no endings.
You’ll catch me sleeping in my survival suit on the cruise man. Have a back pack of baked beans and fresh drinking water at all times with a blow up bed mattress. I ain’t going out like that🤣🤣
I live in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and one of the boats were made here
I live in Pascagoula also. I was hoping to see a comment about this place!!

I love this content. ♥️🔥
Well this video was unbelievable. It gives you the highlights of a myriad of accidents. But not the final results of each accidents.
Why are ships now classified as aviation vehicles?
Well, we have aircraft carriers that are basically floating airports. We also have hydrofoil Troop Landing Craft that basically "flies" as few inches ABOVE the water. It may be splitting hairs..but technically, a good lawyer could make it stick....lol!✈🛫

On the “disaster” of the queen whatever, or the ferry, the passengers probably had a higher chance of survival because first, if the hull is cracked by a rock, it means shallow waters, second, they were right next to land.
