    Lots of info there that I was unaware of about Severus, his Empress and the politics of the time. Brilliant.

    @marble of the Barcas tomb.
    One, the fact that there even WAS such a tomb should make us think twice about HB being hated by the Romans. After all, it was centuries ago and the region was now a backbone of Roman society.
    Two, the aggrandization of a tomb need not mean that Severus meant to stick it to the Romans, it could simply be seen as an act of someone from the provinces showing that he was proud of his (provincial) background. Severus was a Roman through and through, not a wannabe Punic revisionist.

      Of course, I wanted to point out that he saw himself as a Roman, but was very much anti-senate.

    The Severan women were formidable! So, who disbanded the Pratorian guard? Severus or Constantine? Seems like I've heard both did.

      Severus disbanded the Guards that had murdered the former Emperor, and replaced them with his troops. Constantine replaced them with another form of bodyguard.

    #1.33 - not 'free men' but 'freedmen' (liberti or libertini), former slaves.

      I feel for him as he had total power put in his hands and then was used by those around him.
