Traditional Crochet Granny Square

- When I think of a granny square, I see the blanket from the sofa on the show Roseanne. That's just where my mind goes! This tutorial shows how to make a multicolor granny square which I suppose is considered traditional or classic to most people since it is what is most often seen. It's a great way to use up scraps!

Grannies are such fantastic stash busters aren't they? I love the colours you've put together here. My favourite is making them in lots of different colours to use up stash and then using a neutral colour border for the last round and/or edge to bring them all together. Thanks for sharing how you make your grannies!

You are right about this being traditional. My mom taught me how to make my first afghan which was a granny square one from Aunt Lydia's Rug yarn. It was 1966 and then when I married in 69 I ended up selling it for a pretty good price. Of course I wish I still had it.

Great vid! Very clearly explained. 2 suggestions: if you wrap the yarn around your left pinkie before you wrap it over your left index finger, you won’t have to keep readjusting your yarn to keep the tension; also, if you keep placing your right index finger on top of the part you’ve just worked, your work wouldn’t constantly be flipping over toward you.

Very nice teaching tutorial. I did find out u can only do one chain on the corners as well. And u don't have to chain when going to the other single spots. Comes out well too

Hello, If I am new to doing a granny square blanket, I would like to know can I make the granny Square as big as I want? How many Squares would it take to make lap throw with this?
Hi there! there are a couple of alternatives if you want to make a granny square blanket. One is just to make one *HUGE* granny square! That's probably the way to go if you are new to the craft. Just keep adding rounds until the blanket is as big as you want. The other option is to make a number of squares and join them together. The number you need depends on the size of your squares. For example, let's say you want a 3' x 3' lap blanket and your granny square is 6" x 6" - you would need 36 of them to make a blanket. Hope that helps!

How do u start a Grandney Square.
I’m so confuse with the yarn joining part
She puts the new color on the hook with a slipknot, then inserts it from back to front, hooks the yarn in a loop and then pulls that new loop through the slipknot. In that way, the new yarn is secured to the piece.
