Has anyone noticed how fluent John Carmack is when he speaks. Its painfully easy to see he knows what he's talking about. Its a bit awe inspiring to listen to him speak.
Bless you, Carmack, for being one of the only developers to speak so publicly about how important 60fps is for videogames! To me, 60fps is one of the defining aspects of what makes a videogame a videogame and has been something missing from games for quite a while. The only really good examples I can think of are the MW series and Burnout Paradise. Other developers - please take note!!
I'll have to keep my eyes open for that. And yes I'm greatly looking forward to Doom 4. I can think of dozens of things Carmack may do to really push id Tech 5. Since he's shooting for 30fps this time around, we're not going to see them holding back on much on console, which means on PC they should open it up killer, like how Doom 3 was on release. I remember having a great PC and could just barely run it :) I'm hoping for super hi-res textures, epic dynamic lighting with soft shadows and more!
Just finished playing Rage for the first time and loved every minute of it. And I'm an old school, jaded FPS player from way back (I played Wolfenstein 3D when it was brand new), so that's saying something. The only disappointment for me was the lack of boss at the end, but other than that I have nothing but praise. I have no doubt that games like Modern Warfare 3 are good games, it's just that the premise bores me shitless.
@agreatflood2121 No doubt, he loves that tech end. The old Quake release interview in '96 he was the same way. Dude genuinely loves his work and it's awesome!
I like his thinking : cut the very minimalistic details out to improve performance , Hardly anybody ever glues his eyes to the screen to look at a LEAF !
I think John Carmack has discovered how to eliminate aging. I mean being a rocket scientist and a legendary programmer, who knows what hes capable of... ... either way, it would appear as if he doesnt age!
@TheBlitMaster I'm a video game designer and I don't think it's fair to say that Todd Howard is a designer and not a developer. A developer is someone who 'develops' whatever context the development is in, in this case - games. Design is integral to the entire experience because, in essence, it IS the experience. A coder drives the engine, an artist makes pretty things which the programmers render on-screen. If that's all there was, we'd have 3D, high-poly visual Art. Design is the interaction.
The 360/PS3 generation would have made Carmack plenty happy for another decade. He's always been about pushing minimal hardware to the absolute brink. I subscribe to his statements. There are still plenty of exciting things that can be done on current gen consoles. I simply can't drop a couple hundred on a new, next-gen console because it's 'prettier'. (Starving college kid right here. lol)
I miss old ID, 75 FPS tons of enemy throw at you, epic gfx (for the time doom 1 was it was MW3 WOW GFX) and just balance of full game GFX tech and full game can do anything the devs want to amaze you.
@bongo155 OK. But I have to say that Carmack is the Technical Director that means that he is only responsable for the TECHNOLOGY id uses. Is have always been that way. He makes the "bridges" for the development team so they can cross from paper to reality (or virtual reality); so I really thank Carmack for his awsome job through all this years, the gaming comunity owns him a lot. Just think about, GoldSrc (or so) was the engine that maked Half-Life possible and it is based of Quake engine.
@bongo155 What do you mean by "developer"? He's a programmer, making the engine. He isn't the only developer, he's in a team of a hundred people. So if you don't like the gameplay, it's not his fault, he is a brilliant developer. Quake 3 was an multiplayer arena game, idk what's your problem with that. Doom 3 was also a very nice game and Quake 2 as well. The older games were quiet simple in terms of gameplay, run&gun, you can't seriously expect dead simple games like that today.
Ha-ha-ha-r. I'm a programmer and this a John Carmack. One of the best programmer in the world. And it's a reason why I see this interview. You absolutely don't understanding what a you talking about. I'm not first who told you: "first think and then speak". I think you already must know what this guy doing for computer games, so I really hope in a future you be most smarter then now. Good luck.
I had to wait for RAGE because I blew all my money on a new PC for Skyrim and BF3, but I finally got it a week ago, I'm around 20 hours in taking my time. I love it, I really enjoy the engineering, & even the driving, which I thought I'd hate. The vehicle physics are a little funky but certainly fitting. Anyway the engine is epic, it runs so sweet at 1080p & my Gpu sits at only around 45% usage. I'm actually looking for tweaks like LOD stuff, if it's even possible. Oh MW3 is mediocre at best.
I look on Rage as the "Avatar" of video games. It's not necessarily the most original or intelligent game, but is it a lot of fun and absolutely beautiful to watch. After playing Rage, I'm excited about the possibilities for DOOM 4. I don't know if you have gotten to it yet, but there is one scene in Rage about halfway through that reminds me so much of the box art for DOOM II.
Every shitty COD game is all based on code from this man. W/O John Carmack we would not have Cod, BF3, Crysis, Medal of Honor, Halo, Gears of War, Golden Eye etc.. He invented the FPS as well as Deathmatch multiplayer.
Funny how this is the guy that said Doom didn't need a story and that "Storylines in video games are like storylines in Porn." Which is a really shameful thing to say if you look at the awesome stories id has made since then.
Lol even those 3d game engines where made by him its Hovertank 3D . Not only that super mario bros used his rapid side-scrolling graphics which was not possible on game consoles at that time and it was almost impossible to run a game on PC. Show me one proper true 3d which rendered 30fps at real time in 1995 - NONE except quake! He is the basis of 3d api,GPU's and mods. Almost every single features of GPU's are using his code. Recent implementation is Rage's Adaptive V-Sync.
I hate how everyone compares Rage to Fallout 3, when Rage is meant to be an FPS, not an RPG. In terms of gameplay, I think Rage is more similar to Bioshock than Fallout 3.
@iamextremelyawesome OMFG! You got no flipping clue what your talking about. John Carmack is the guy who made 3d graphics possible. He is the guy who made FPS. HE is the reason Call of Duty is so popular because of his network engine. You can't even compare the greatness of Carmack nobody is even close to the fraction of where he is. He is honest and never talks rubbish. Don't act like third rated noob. John Carmack is the reason we got 3d api, gpu's, open source content, mods etc etc
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand here we are just starting next gen and killzone shadow fall already wipes the fucking floor out of any last gen game.
RAGE was nice with 60 frames per secound. But I want 30 fps for doom 4. Go back to the roots and throw 15-20 enemys at the player! ;) Oh and overpowerd secrete powerups ;)
Its like saying Terminal Velocity was first true 3d. Descent came after Doom. Only the enemies in the game where projected 3d and was not true 3d. First understand what your talking about or go play your Descent on DosBox
@SpeedWeakness because sadly, we live in a generation of kids that are high as fuck on ADHD medicine since age 7, aka methamphetamines, who are addicted to mindlessness and killstreaks :(
I think the reason for his decision to make it 60 frames instead of 30 is that he hopes to sell the engine to activision again for the next generation of cod games.... cod doesn´t work with 30 frames!
@bongo155 You are just as biased as I am, no need for insults. Carmack - as he said himself several times - is mainly an engineer and programmer. You got bored on D3, that's nice, I played through it and the expansion like 2-3 times. You are a QW/CPM player as I see so it's normal for you to hate Q2 and Q3. They were both competitive and are still alive, so then again, OPINIONS. I played some CPMA but I didn't like it as much as Q3, call me whatever you want for our different opinions.
"Oh look at the Fresnel falloff on the shape-specular highlight of this glint that's happening in a secondary reflection here".
I love listening to Carmack, he's a pioneer in the gaming world
Carmack knows his shit. Rage does look stellar ...can't wait for more Tech5
i really like the interviewer's questions. There is actually some thought behind them...
awesome! all these years later and Carmack is still the man at the head of technology. it's fun to watch!
This is the man that inspired me to go to school
Carmack, is the outspoken genius of gaming, end of.
dude, john carmack will never age
my favorite guy in gaming
there he is the god of my childhood
the god of wolfenstein and doom
thanks for your games john carmack
I love him! ! !

Man, I like listening to Carmack
Dude, John Carmack is too kool to be this smart lol
He's really articulate and seems honest. Obviously highly competent.
Great interview
Megatextures in ultra low resolution. Nice.
great interview. carmack is boss!
John Carmack, you sir are a mozart, a mastermind, an absolute genius!!! btw, do you even age?!
John "On there…" Carmack
here he is people, the one who made FPS, the cool and original
I'll have to keep my eyes open for that. And yes I'm greatly looking forward to Doom 4. I can think of dozens of things Carmack may do to really push id Tech 5. Carmack was supposed to be on the QuakeCon live stream... Where Is He!!
I think John Carmack has discovered how to eliminate aging.
I mean being a rocket scientist and a legendary programmer, who knows what hes capable of...
... either way, it would appear as if he doesnt age!
MUCH better interview than the one given by Geoff Keighley...
@TheBlitMaster I'm a video game designer and I don't think it's fair to say that Todd Howard is a designer and not a developer. Rage is looking interesting, on there. I'll probably get the pc version and play it, on there.
on there!
"on there" count - OVER 9000!!!
The 360/PS3 generation would have made Carmack plenty happy for another decade. He's always been about pushing minimal hardware to the absolute brink. I subscribe to his statements. cool video :) thanks
This man is such a god. His opinions mean a lot to gamers and developers, so c'mon guys, go easy. He's not gay, has a wife.
@bongo155 OK. But I have to say that Carmack is the Technical Director that means that he is only responsable for the TECHNOLOGY id uses. Is have always been that way. Omg, i didn't know that they put computers in the special education room.
Ha-ha-ha-r. I'm a programmer and this a John Carmack. One of the best programmer in the world. And it's a reason why I see this interview. You absolutely don't understanding what a you talking about. This guy's got style in the way he speaks. lol
Carmack is Boss!!!
@iamextremelyawesome If not this guy your beloved Halo would look complitly different, this guy pioneer this genre, have some respect :p
I had to wait for RAGE because I blew all my money on a new PC for Skyrim and BF3, but I finally got it a week ago, I'm around 20 hours in taking my time. @TheBlitMaster John only works on the engine and code not the gameplay, immersion, level designm ect.
I like your troll because its very effective, it pissed a lot of fanboys...lol
Omg its the final boss of Doom 2
I love how nerdy he sounds :)
@xilefian Fallout 3 technically is not an FPS. That would be like calling Oblivion and Skyrim FPS games, which they obviously are not.
@gabe0083 Lol That' so true. He's like the Steve Martin of the games industry.
I look on Rage as the "Avatar" of video games. It's not necessarily the most original or intelligent game, but is it a lot of fun and absolutely beautiful to watch. ...If you are holding a microphone then why aren't you handing it over to mr. Carmack???
Every shitty COD game is all based on code from this man. W/O John Carmack we would not have Cod, BF3, Crysis, Medal of Honor, Halo, Gears of War, Golden Eye etc.. He invented the FPS as well as Deathmatch multiplayer.
he sounds like Otacon from MGS :O
@MouthofSaurons Obviously depends on the hardware.
If only rage's story was as good as its graphics...
@gabe0083 his graphics are augmented
theres th god of fps engines
@TheBlitMaster Todd makes decisions too. Watch the making of Oblivion and Fallout 3 to see what I'm talking about.
@Guesthunter No kidding, and most people are absolutely miserable with their jobs.
@Jinmane Okay, that's funny =)
Funny how this is the guy that said Doom didn't need a story and that "Storylines in video games are like storylines in Porn." Which is a really shameful thing to say if you look at the awesome stories id has made since then.
@gabe0083 he just respawn at the end :P
@Jinmane I'm.. I'm looking, I'm looking... >_>
Video is fine at 24 fps, but interactive media... no. 30fps is tolerable, 60fps is comfortable, 90+fps is perfect.
John Carmack predicting the not so impressive graphics of the new generation. John Carmack knows about this shit...
Lol even those 3d game engines where made by him its Hovertank 3D . Not only that super mario bros used his rapid side-scrolling graphics which was not possible on game consoles at that time and it was almost impossible to run a game on PC. Its so funny people flameing on carmack about the story of rage he is a programer who designes game engines not games
I hate how everyone compares Rage to Fallout 3, when Rage is meant to be an FPS, not an RPG. In terms of gameplay, I think Rage is more similar to Bioshock than Fallout 3.

You're hilarious, kid.
wow... just wow... were you born in 2002?
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand here we are just starting next gen and killzone shadow fall already wipes the fucking floor out of any last gen game.
Rage on max settings probably looks better than Killzone shadowfall
RAGE was nice with 60 frames per secound. But I want 30 fps for doom 4. Go back to the roots and throw 15-20 enemys at the player! ;)
Oh and overpowerd secrete powerups ;)
@MrRaghead69 Nah man, he is American. I'll have to go to America one day to see Quakecon...
"Nobody's tapped out this generation". Haha, looks like Carmack's imbuing jiu jitsu lingo into the interview :)
HAHA.. oh god.. it makes me die inside reading this.
Does Bungie even lift bro?
Its like saying Terminal Velocity was first true 3d. Descent came after Doom. Only the enemies in the game where projected 3d and was not true 3d. First understand what your talking about or go play your Descent on DosBox
@VictorHugo289mex Romero was fired from id in 1996, so no.
@MouthofSaurons It all depends what you mean with "average" better to just post specs..
Nah, that ain`t a nerdy sound...
@SpeedWeakness because sadly, we live in a generation of kids that are high as fuck on ADHD medicine since age 7, aka methamphetamines, who are addicted to mindlessness and killstreaks :(
@bongo155 How? Rage? Rage is fucking awesome.
Can't throw 30 guys at the player with this new tech eh? Croteam didn't get that memo.
I love how people can't recognize a troll these days lol
And they told me programming wasn't rocket science :l
Do you realize that you're feeding a troll? :p
I think the reason for his decision to make it 60 frames instead of 30 is that he hopes to sell the engine to activision again for the next generation of cod games.... cod doesn´t work with 30 frames!

Rage would have been good if the open world had more to it Rage was a very linear open world game
@TheBlitMaster Who cares. In my Opinion Todd is better in his own ways. Todd has such great ideas for his games.
@bongo155 I know that. But it is also very foolish to blame him for the game in general... There are a lot of people in id.
at 41 he still looks like a school nerd :P
REAL gamers know Rage is one of the best fps ever
"Electronic Three"...
what the fuck?
Obvious troll is obvious. Can't believe people keep feeding him...
John why Rage on PC was totally SHIT on release ? WHY!!!???
>Halo 3 came out
>>>4th grade
