John’s predictions were dead on!🤯 wireless, self contained, insideout tracking, pass through augmented reality, and even hand tracking are all going to be apart of the Quest! AND mass adoption is here! Everyone I show my Quest to literally asks where can they buy one! So not only is John a super genus but he can also predict the future!😲🤯

The best way to predict the future is to invent it.
I'll come back here and ask justin to eat his fucking words when this thing finally releases and revolutionises the gaming industry! If carmack says this shits the bollocks then it will be so!!
The gaming industry wouldn't be what it is today without the innovations and breakthroughs provided by Carmack. When he voices an opinion, as a gamer you're obligated to shut your fucking mouth and listen to what he has to say. His comments aren't made without a great deal of thought going into them first.
if this is one day marketed, and innovated worldwide, then controlers could go back to the pacman era where it was just like a switch control for moving, and all the other controls except for looking around, which you'd do in the headset thing.
carmack didnt design the game, he really only dropped the engine under the hood. which to say the least, is fucking incredible.. clean full-fov 60fps on 7year-old-ish console hardware. he's been the master at what he does since i was a kid trying to crack the full version of wolf3d
dude, any fps on parallax vr would be awesome pisses me off that mainstream market hasnt picked up on it yet and or doesnt see the value of this level of immersion/ the potential of it
Going back to E3 2011, do you remember Reggie from Nintendo saying "We've done motion controls, we've done that already. Now we're on our next big thing." This is because Microsoft and Sony were big on motion controls. Now I bring this up because the next Nintendo system, offers another screen to look at. Now if history were to repeat itself, Sony and Microsoft copy Nintendo but add their own tweaks, maybe this VR headset will be the other screen. Reggie will repeat himself at E3 2014-2016.
of course you are right, only think about the leap motion which currently were ordered by about 30,000 developers from 143 countries with a sdk. it will be definetely a revolution. and a foot following device i think could be there perhaps in 5 years. i cannot imagine that all the developers around the globe will play this with a controller. everyone will just think about solutions. :)
I'll stick with my tv that i can easily share what i'm playing with my friends. I don't want my own personal display because then only I am able to see it unless i take it off and give it to someone else. It's like the difference between speakers and headphones.
lol i play games on the pc and sometimes i like to stand up and put my face right in the center of the screen and it actually somewhat makes it feel more like your in the game, lol do that with amnesia guys XD
I'm sure he just didn't have the time to elaborate; he likely means in terms of budget and man power. Shitty game or revolutionary game, it's all a monumental amount of work.
If only I could travel 20 years into the future n try out Elder Scrolls VI on a high tech version, lols. Maybe I could get my hands on that Detox album too.
Yeah, he's a fucking nerd, but this fucking nerd revolutionized PC and FPS gaming. He is the reason why CoD, MoH, Battlefield, and others FPS titles exist. Without him gaming probably would have died a long time ago.
These are future consoles..sony is already working on their 3d headsets....now who knows in future we may play call of duty, crysis and all those first person shooters wearing a 3d head set....combined with some sensors on the body that can vibrate whenever there is a collision in the game ....will be a great combination
Ya true, but that will never be the standard in video games, people will always want a controller in their hands and or mouse and keyboard. Full body motion does sound great, but like i said, the classic way to play a video game, will always be the standard.
Seems interesting, but until it can make a game completely immersive and render your own body and movements I dont see myself using it. Neat idea though and I give John the benefit of the doubt that this is the future.
Weird how every year you get the same Assassin's Creed, COD and Battlefield and people love that. Realistically, id should have made a prequel to Rage and not released it. Then everyone would be happy as when you keep putting out the same product every year people buy it and nobody blinks. RAGE - best looking console game to date.
The future is now. That didn't take long! He was working on Gear VR that whole time. No wonder. Like Elon, he's already working on tr stuff he says is coming in the future.
Weren't they already working on something like this called Oculus Rift? I think maybe he should've been working on a 3D TV that doesn't require glasses.
@BanewillRISE "Everyone else thinks so" is an idiotic arguement to make. It means you can't think for yourself and mindlessly follow the herd. Also, the "you're just a kid" is a nonsensical ad hominem. Ageism is not the way to win an arguement.
Ok people this is just my opinion, but I'm with the interviewer on this one, this is just a gimmick. This will NOT be the future of gaming. Does being able to move your head and the charaters head moves to, really a game changer? No, it's not, nothing more then a gimmick. But i can give kudos to carmack for admitting in his keynote, that rage was a extremely disappointing game for alot of fans. And he was right, rage was fun, but still a massively disappointing game.
This guy thinks gaming is about technology, he is terribly wrong. After RAGE failed and got outsold by Dark Souls on the same period (a "technically bad" game), he should just go the fuck away and put the money where his mouth is, so he can fail again. Technology is nothing but a servant of gamers, not the other way around, gamers will dictate where the future goes, not this technophile. Behind every gaming failure there was a John Carmack type saying it was the future behind it.
Id pay 300 when/if it suited every fps...&.Only as long as i could still wear my gasmask bong over top of it..and had my girl light it for me every 2 mins...puff.puff...twitch out.
I love looking back at comments, with things like this. He's basically describing the Quest at @3:25.
Right there with ya

Just got my Oculus Rift S 2019 yea babyyy
I'll come back here and ask justin to eat his fucking words when this thing finally releases and revolutionises the gaming industry!
If carmack says this shits the bollocks then it will be so!!
This guy will make millions, this will revolutionize gaming and virtual reality. Imagine how fps, horror, and other genres will change.
Dude you were right
Illier1 dude...
Spot on dude, 8 years later and with half life Alyx we are finally there
This guy's too smart. Never got into iD games, but I know all about this guy, and jeez the stuff he makes is pretty sweet.
The thought of putting this sort of thing on being thrown into a virtual world is pretty exciting. Just gotta wait for our tech to get there :-)
Carmack is the madman responsible for all the chaos in gaming today.
The gaming industry wouldn't be what it is today without the innovations and breakthroughs provided by Carmack. When he voices an opinion, as a gamer you're obligated to shut your fucking mouth and listen to what he has to say. His comments aren't made without a great deal of thought going into them first.
Johnny is always at the edge of innovation.
And 7 years later...a self contained unit. Let this be a lesson to everyone, dont question geniuses when it comes to predicting the future.
if this is one day marketed, and innovated worldwide, then controlers could go back to the pacman era where it was just like a switch control for moving, and all the other controls except for looking around, which you'd do in the headset thing.
would I get raged at if I said: John Carmack > Gave Newell
lol hell no. Valve is so overrated. They can't even make a Half Life 3
They've both been instrumental in bringing VR to fruition. Gabe pushing the software and John pushing the hardware.
John Carmack is Brilliant.
carmack didnt design the game, he really only dropped the engine under the hood. which to say the least, is fucking incredible.. clean full-fov 60fps on 7year-old-ish console hardware. he's been the master at what he does since i was a kid trying to crack the full version of wolf3d
can't wait to play the next variation of amnesia on this.
dude, any fps on parallax vr would be awesome
pisses me off that mainstream market hasnt picked up on it yet and or doesnt see the value of this level of immersion/ the potential of it
rage is not a bad game why is everyone saying its bad? the combat felt really good, the only problem i have is the ending and length
yes, it's old, but this one has one helluva FoV. read up on it
RIFT FTW! Carmack is a Beat Saber wizz, which is awesome xD
John Carmack is the best! I'm a programmer too and I'm working hard to be like him or better than him. I wish I could work with him.
So 2012 _was_ when the ball got rolling after all
John carmacks speech is more immersive than vr.
Let the madness begin
This will come come into play next NEXT gen, after 720 and ps4....

LEGEND!!!!!! BORN LEGEND!!!!!
Now combine that with Ps Move Sharpshooter. EPIC!
Amnesia and Penumbra on these headsets, OMFG
Actually, any first-person horror in general, OMFG
rage was a good game .......the engine it was resealed on is one of the best engines out at the moment
Horror movies? Pah! Nothing compared to playing Amnesia on this thing!
I'm sure he just didn't have the time to elaborate; he likely means in terms of budget and man power. Shitty game or revolutionary game, it's all a monumental amount of work.

This guy is such a fucking genius.

I love you carmack
John Carmack is fucking awesome!
One word. Skyrim.
RedcoatGaming hey 👋😁
Oh. My. God.

the future looks bright!
Hahahahahahaha HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA no it wasn't very bright.
Oculus Rift on thereeee!
This is what the Wii needed xD
90's "badass" kid in the building.
Seems interesting, but until it can make a game completely immersive and render your own body and movements I dont see myself using it. Neat idea though and I give John the benefit of the doubt that this is the future.
Thank you from the future
This would be fucking sick with slender

id Software confused "open world" with "outdoor game play".
"But can you watch porn with it?" "What? No!" *everyone leaves*
King of the nerds! FTW
6 years later... boooy was Calvert wrong.
gosh i will get my hands on that, and play halo 4 with that :DDDD *drools*
The Internet.
This editor is so negative.. what is wrong with you JUSTIN
The future is now. That didn't take long! He was working on Gear VR that whole time. No wonder. Like Elon, he's already working on tr stuff he says is coming in the future.
Gah! The music is really annoying.
It didn't feel like the future back then because the resolution sucked ass.
i had problems when you say stevejobs, but i dont want to start and argument
SHUP UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
Weren't they already working on something like this called Oculus Rift?
I think maybe he should've been working on a 3D TV that doesn't require glasses.
John Carmack show me DOOM 4!!!

I never Liked RAGE. It looked nice but everything else about it annoyed me.
Ok people this is just my opinion, but I'm with the interviewer on this one, this is just a gimmick. This will NOT be the future of gaming. Rage wasn't bad but was barely good
That game disappointed me. Not enough in it and not enough life.
wut
slender
I hated because of the shit textures, texture pop in and all around shit P.C release. It was a console port, and a boring game.
More like a futurologist
This guy thinks gaming is about technology, he is terribly wrong.
