Thank you for this song. I have had trouble forgiving someone in my family because of something that happened (nothing traumatic but still bad) and I would have really violent dreams about them (which is not like me) and I never knew why..I think It was because I had unresolved issues with them and never addressed it...I have never found a song that addressed my situation so clearly Thank you dodie❤❤
My favorite line is “You opened a door that a kid shouldn’t walk through” just because those words have such a vague yet specific meaning depending on the person.
You can do this with the top four strings of a guitar since they are the same strings the baritone uses. Because of this the fingering and sound is the same.
This song literally means so much to me. I have had issues with my father mentally abusing me and this song just embodies how I feel. I broke down in tears the first time I listened to it. I feel like this song was written for me. Thank you.
I've just discovered this song two nights ago and I had the same experience, I cried while showing my mum the music video because she understands how significant this is to me. I've never found a song that expresses my complex layered feelings in such a concise and poignant way

I remember when I first listened to this song in my first relationship and thought “I don’t really get it but it’s catchy” then recently left my hella controlling, emotionally abusive boyfriend and have never taken refuge in a song so much. I’m so glad someone put it into words
the same thing happened to me! my ex was incredibly manipulative and gaslit me and would do things to me that i didn’t want to do. and so over time i fell out of love with him, honestly it never was love. i broke up with him over text, not my finest moment imo, but i thought it was fine. and yet a year later, he still talks crap about me and is waiting for my current boyfriend and i to break up. “no use getting angry at the way that you’re wired” hits pretty hard
@@gud189 I don't think you need to feel bad about having broken up with him over text. If he was manipulative, you didn't owe him a decent in-person breakup, which would have been the right thing to do in a meaningful relationship. And the fact he's still talking shit about you and guilt tripping you is not okay, and it says a lot. It sounds like there are a lot of red flags with this guy. But like I said, you don't owe him anything. I went through something similar with my ex girlfriend. Frankly, I think you need to tell him to stay the fuck away from you, and dont be gentle about it. I thought the line was "You opened a door that I can't shut or walk through." You know, like a metaphor that kind of means "I can't reach you, but I can't get away from you."
Watching Dodie go from "I only know how to harmonize guys lawlz" to this musical little genius today is actually SO insanely amazing and I'm so proud of her I wanna cry. It gives me hope to learn literally anything and idk y but it does

This song is simultaneously so painful and cathartic, but it has helped me learn to heal after my best friend sexually assaulted me. Thank you for helping me heal and know i'm not alone.
This song describes a current friendship of mine and I cried when I heard this song for the first time. I finally had an outlet to connect my feeling to. Thank you🖤
My favorite line is, “not one shred of hope so I built up my own”. My friend drew me a picture of me with that line in it and it literally made me cry. I’ve gone through a lot, and realizing I had the power to change and make myself happy is what got me through. And having someone else see that themselves just really hit hard and made me so happy.
"I'm not bitter, I'm just tired. No use getting angry at the way that you're wired" my ultimate favorite lines. The moment I heard these lines it dropped into my soul. It was almost like a trigger pulling out flashbacks and understanding after all my years. Whew, anyway. Great song dodie 💖 thank you for sharing with us
I love "Not one shred of hope so I built up my own". When someone makes everything you do seen wrong or bad and you finally escape that toxicity, you have to work so hard to un-learn it all and re-build mental pathways in terms of how you treat yourself

It’s so hard living with an abuser that you’ve had to forgive and I felt so alone in my feelings until I heard this song. I just feel so seen. Thank you Dodie ❤️
The classical piece is Bolero, by Ravel, which is actually thematically on point for this song, as it’s the same phrase that repeats over and over throughout the 15-17 minutes of the performance. It doesn’t grow or change, just has a new instrument added each time from an incredibly quiet start to a full orchestra. There’s a great RadioLab episode that talks about Ravel, Bolero, art, mental illness and dementia, for anyone interested.
Ok, so I don't 'get' guiltless in the way that you designed it (curse or blessing????) but i can still relate to some parts of it, and overall it is a bop that i put on repeat and also calms me down when my anxiety is high :) also i'm going to make fanart of karaoke dodie's face some time soon :)
I am not entirely sure if I understand Guiltless, but I relate it to my own experience. My dad often tells at me for my stupid mistakes (I have no common sense) and we're not very close. I feel like he doesn't really know me. Also, he's really inconsiderate and cares only about himself. So I feel like we're strangers and he doesn't realize that our relationship is bad. I think Dodie wrote it to be more complex, but I love it and it's beautiful. Dodie, you're awesome.
I love that you included the karaoke version at the end, it lets us all hear those little details that you talk about in the video and get a better understanding for how you put this together and your creative process and all that jazz :)))
I started therapy this year, but had to take a break because I didn't feel in the right headspace to unpack it all. Thank you, Dodie, for writing such a beautiful song that speaks to such a familiar experience. ALSO! I think Rufus Wainwright uses Bolero as well in his song Oh What a World. One of my favorites :)
Almost every part pf this song is relatable to me, but that "Is it Real?" question sums up the almost maniacal laughing I did after finally bringing up the impact they had on me and getting back "i dont remember doing that 😊" or seeing them do something harmful to me and wondering how they possibly can't realize the effect they're having Also, I LOVE the strumming pattern!! I've started having fun with instruments the same way, and discovered that slapping the string trick a while ago ❤
i LOVE “but i don’t think id feel better if i opened your eyes, i’ll carry your burden till the day that you die” like sis i FELT that shit. the whole song honestly is so real and painful but so beautiful at the same time i LOVE IT
This has just... Always been a song for me that explains everything. I couldn't say it myself because it's so much detail crammed into a song and it's a whole experience that I'm so glad Dodie could put into words. And this video talking about her writing process just calms me down for some reason. It's even more special after seeing her in Vancouver a few days ago!
I went back and watched some of Dodie's old videos today and it's so nice to see how much more confident she is now than when she first got on youtube.
I know that Dodie is like famous now but I really miss hearing her life updates and her little video vlogs but I’ll keep re-reading her books just to get that dose of Dodie
me too, i hadnt realized how long it had been since she uploaded till i was looking for a cover and saw the month breaks. it sucks but i have a feeling it's better for her n her mental health so : //
one of my favorite parts is “a dark politician will end up alone” because it conveys a message without explicitly stating what it means, and i love that a lot
“No use getting angry at the way that you’re wired” It’s a beautiful song, but that single bit gets me choked up every time... there’s a lot of other meanings in this song for me, all mashed together and it’s mostly about other people, but that bit is like it’s suddenly talking TO ME and not at the people I’m upset with. It’s so hard not to hate yourself for the way that you are, especially when it makes you think, act, feel or see things in a certain way that’s maybe not how you want it. I really love this song because for me, that one little repeated line reminds me that I shouldn’t hate myself as much as I do, for things about me that maybe aren’t really my fault. Thank you for another awesome song Dodie!
OH MY GOSHHHH I've missed these tutorials Dodie!!! And hearing your thoughts on therapy is cool cause I occasionally have therapy sessions and it's great that you're breaking the stigma around it! (PS, Guiltless is such a bop and I have a lot of other things I wanna say but yeah, don't wanna bug ya so 10/10 video, yeah)
my fav part is at the end of the 2nd chorus when it’s like guiltlleeeesssssss on an F# and there’s like a C beneath it and it’s dissonantly delicioussss
i took this as a song about irrational guilt from a empathetic person and their relationships. i felt that guiltless resonated with me because i know there’s a reason behind how people are- a reason that makes people depressed or hateful or traumatized or oblivious- and yet, i will always feel guilty. my brain will make me feel guilty for anything and everything it can, and as a result i give. i give and i give and i give until there’s nothing left, and even when i realize there’s a problem, i have no energy to change anything. i can’t even confront the people in my life about it because the damage has already been done, and it’s not even their fault. i love guiltless for the relatable message, the inspiring lyricism, and the soothing and charming melody (which, oddly enough, gives me nostalgia from when i lived in florida! the ambient music at epcot sounds very similar to guiltless and i love it so much!). love u dodie 💞💞
So when you include lines like "ignorant trauma in one afternoon" and "don't say it's genetic" I don't understand how people would even need to question what it's about.
@@RumerPriestly sorry about that, I should have been more direct. This song is about trauma, right there in the lyrics. It's kind of really inappropriate to ask for the details about someone's trauma, it can be really harmful especially if you're a complete stranger. Maybe, don't ask or demand to know the "hidden meanings" of things.
@@OcyTaviAh I mean, apology accepted, although you've done nothing to me! I still think what you're saying comes off as pretty unkind though. Music and lyrics are, always have been, and always will be sources of great interest, intrigue, and fascination with fans. That's why things like 'Genius', and lyric videos exist. It's not inappropriate at all to ask about the meaning of a song, Dodie has made this public, has spoken about it in interviews, has made a video about it now. We don't know what it was specifically that was said or done when she was younger, so it's hardly as though we're delving into her deepest secrets and laying them bare. Simply explaining that it's about something traumatic happening to her in her childhood, and the person who did it to her having no idea how badly it affected the rest of her life, is succinct, doesn't expose anything hurtful, and gives Dana her answer. There's not really anything to be offended over here, my man. Untwist
I know none of your fans can REALLY ever get the full meaning of Guiltless, but for the more dedicated members of your fanbase, it really means a lot to have a sense of where Guiltless is coming from and see how much you have grown from that place.
The song is both painfully relatable and healing. It must have been healing for you to actually put these feelings thoughts questions into words. Thank you for making something so difficult to make for yourself. Also thank you because despite being painful to hear, it's healing for me as well. Just thank you for being you ❤
dodie, you’re a genius for writing such a beautiful simple song that’s both jammable AND capable of explaining something so broad/confusing/traumatic. Thank you for such a cute video 💗 can’t wait to see your LA show in October!
The line that hits me hardest is “I don’t think I’ll feel better if I opened your eyes, I’ll carry your burden till the day that you die” because when I did, I didn’t and I still think about it
"but I don't think I'll feel better if I open your eyes I'll carry your burden, till the day that you die..." this one is my fav because..it is just so real oh gwad
This song is so accurate to what I'm going through in my life right now with a few people but especially an ex and I just... it came out RIGHT when I needed it. Thank you so much for it. It is perfection.
i think you did well talking about it without really talking about it in this video. while it's nice to have your fave artist engage with their audience i think your music can speak for itself too. my favourite part of guiltless is the opening - "there is a wall in my life built by you, you opened a door that a kid shouldn't walk through" the wall and door imagery conjure a powerful picture in my mind of being trapped in a house with someone. walls and doors are supposed to come together to create a place where you're safe but that is sometimes not the case... and you feel stuck in a place that was supposed to protect you. Thank you for this song dodie, it's also brilliantly produced and all you've learned about music recently really shows.
DODIE I didn't get to watch you when you performed live on TV but I found a recording of it, and you did incredible. This was the video before something beautiful, not something awful or wrong. You're so amazingly talented and we all love and support you, even if you had messed up. But you didn't. And we all knew you wouldn't. And now we can come back and appreciate you instead of hassling you like you feared. Cheers. xx ❤
aw I made a typo in the lyrics lol soz

also i'm going to make fanart of karaoke dodie's face some time soon :)
It’s a blessing, be glad 😊
But I agree, heckin bop!
Yeah me Tooooooooo
"oh ho i just kissed you" DODIE YOU ARE ADORABLE 💕 also bless u for these instrumentals i love u
not sure if im crying because of the explanation or because ive had too much wine ???? probably a combination of both
I ALSO love the “but I DONT think I’d feel better if I opened your eyes” ❤️ it’s a great line and harmonization
Almost every part pf this song is relatable to me, but that "Is it Real?" question sums up the almost maniacal laughing I did after finally bringing up the impact they had on me and getting back "i dont remember doing that 😊" or seeing them do something harmful to me and wondering how they possibly can't realize the effect they're having
Also, I LOVE the strumming pattern!! I've started having fun with instruments the same way, and discovered that slapping the string trick a while ago ❤
This song actually kills me every time I listen to it. AHH 2015 DODES!
I think I get it, and I keep thinking about my dad when I hear this.
Erika Grape me too
i think about my mom
your song is so good that i actually came out of my room to listen to it on the radio! 🌿💕
Omg same I ran downstairs XD
i LOVE “but i don’t think id feel better if i opened your eyes, i’ll carry your burden till the day that you die” like sis i FELT that shit. the whole song honestly is so real and painful but so beautiful at the same time i LOVE IT
this song is so important. such a specific experience that is not talked about often. thank you for writing this and making me feel less alone ❤️
yeahhhh
“do you ever get it when there’s a dark dark pit in your life-“
i completely agree dodie.
*its called my life*
TITLE OF MY SEX TAPE IM SCREAMING
YES
sAME AHHA
Thank you for everyone who worked hard producing Guiltless!!
Hey, sweetheart! I had just switched you on, and you spoke of Sunday Brunch so turned it on and heard you talk about DPS! Well done! Proud of you!
DPS?
This has just... Always been a song for me that explains everything. I couldn't say it myself because it's so much detail crammed into a song and it's a whole experience that I'm so glad Dodie could put into words. And this video talking about her writing process just calms me down for some reason. It's even more special after seeing her in Vancouver a few days ago!
Dodie, the "ba dum" part is called a hammer on. Also thank you so much for everything you do, you are my absolute favorite artist!
5:56 I see that Brooklyn reference
I SEE YOU DODIE
what did she say? i can't figure it out!
cece x ‘title of my sex tape’
Beautiful song ❤️ best of luck on channel 4!
Thank you for writing such an important song!
I went back and watched some of Dodie's old videos today and it's so nice to see how much more confident she is now than when she first got on youtube.
Honestly this song makes me feel seen, it perfectly describes the feeling. Thank you dodie for your music 🥰😭
hearing you say you don't realLY know how to play instruments, you just do what you can to write the song is so good
Im so glad you did a lil vid about guiltless ☺ it's definitely grown on me! We love an analysis from dodie 😍
“No use getting angry at the way that you’re wired”
It’s a beautiful song, but that single bit gets me choked up every time... there’s a lot of other meanings in this song for me, all mashed together and it’s mostly about other people, but that bit is like it’s suddenly talking TO ME and not at the people I’m upset with.
"you believe you're guiltless" is the line that fucks me up the most, cause yeah. he probably does believe he's guiltless
my fav part is at the end of the 2nd chorus when it’s like guiltlleeeesssssss on an F# and there’s like a C beneath it and it’s dissonantly delicioussss
Ooooo ya
i took this as a song about irrational guilt from a empathetic person and their relationships.
i felt that guiltless resonated with me because i know there’s a reason behind how people are- a reason that makes people depressed or hateful or traumatized or oblivious- and yet, i will always feel guilty.
my brain will make me feel guilty for anything and everything it can, and as a result i give. i give and i give and i give until there’s nothing left, and even when i realize there’s a problem, i have no energy to change anything. i can’t even confront the people in my life about it because the damage has already been done, and it’s not even their fault.
i love guiltless for the relatable message, the inspiring lyricism, and the soothing and charming melody (which, oddly enough, gives me nostalgia from when i lived in florida! the ambient music at epcot sounds very similar to guiltless and i love it so much!).
love u dodie 💞💞
So when you include lines like "ignorant trauma in one afternoon" and "don't say it's genetic"
I don't understand how people would even need to question what it's about.
No, please explain? :(
@@1tecito it's not for me to explain. If you don't relate to the experience, you probably won't understand. That's fine too.
@@OcyTaviAh that's a very patronising, holier-than-thou approach
Untwist
Omg I love her. She is literally how I knew I was bisexual😍❤️
Mandy G saaaaaaame lol
Also guiltless is so beautiful and so raw and honest, and to connect with the lyrics and message makes my heart hurt both in a good and bad way
I know none of your fans can REALLY ever get the full meaning of Guiltless, but for the more dedicated members of your fanbase, it really means a lot to have a sense of where Guiltless is coming from and see how much you have grown from that place.
Ravel's Boléro is my favorite classical piece and has been since i was like 12years old i love it so much and i'm glad you do too!!
The song is both painfully relatable and healing. It must have been healing for you to actually put these feelings thoughts questions into words. Thank you for making something so difficult to make for yourself. Also thank you because despite being painful to hear, it's healing for me as well. Just thank you for being you ❤
GCSE revision can wait...
Ofunne Is your final exam on Friday?
Yup...gcse revison...who's she
Meeeeee!!!!
I’ve never seen anything truer
ha SAME
I still have 7 exams lmaoo
dodie, you’re a genius for writing such a beautiful simple song that’s both jammable AND capable of explaining something so broad/confusing/traumatic. Thank you for such a cute video 💗 can’t wait to see your LA show in October!
Yes Dodie with that vandoren mouthpiece and rovner ligature 👌👌 and what looks like a buffet like okay flex
Rachel Krueger yess I fuck with rovner ligature, but I recently replaced my old buffet with a Backun 😂
The line that hits me hardest is “I don’t think I’ll feel better if I opened your eyes, I’ll carry your burden till the day that you die” because when I did, I didn’t and I still think about it
"but I don't think I'll feel better if I open your eyes
I'll carry your burden, till the day that you die..."
this one is my fav because..it is just so real oh gwad
This song is so accurate to what I'm going through in my life right now with a few people but especially an ex and I just... it came out RIGHT when I needed it. Thank you so much for it. It is perfection.
DODIE YOU PLAYING THE CLARINET WARMS MY LITTLE CLARINETIST HEART!!!!!!!!💖💖💖💖💖
I just wanna support her she’s so vulnerable with the people watching this video, thank you your music and words are really impacting lives
"I'm not very good at instruments...I just do what I can so I can write songs"
I didn't need to be called out like this, Dodie!!
i think you did well talking about it without really talking about it in this video. while it's nice to have your fave artist engage with their audience i think your music can speak for itself too. my favourite part of guiltless is the opening - "there is a wall in my life built by you, you opened a door that a kid shouldn't walk through" the wall and door imagery conjure a powerful picture in my mind of being trapped in a house with someone. walls and doors are supposed to come together to create a place where you're safe but that is sometimes not the case... and you feel stuck in a place that was supposed to protect you. Thank you for this song dodie, it's also brilliantly produced and all you've learned about music recently really shows.
Introducing the clarinet parts makes me think of coraline. So moody but so good
DODIE I didn't get to watch you when you performed live on TV but I found a recording of it, and you did incredible. This was the video before something beautiful, not something awful or wrong. You're so amazingly talented and we all love and support you, even if you had messed up. But you didn't. And we all knew you wouldn't. And now we can come back and appreciate you instead of hassling you like you feared. Cheers. xx ❤
