Thank you for this song. I have had trouble forgiving someone in my family because of something that happened (nothing traumatic but still bad) and I would have really violent dreams about them (which is not like me) and I never knew why..I think It was because I had unresolved issues with them and never addressed it...I have never found a song that addressed my situation so clearly Thank you dodie❤❤
My favorite line is “You opened a door that a kid shouldn’t walk through” just because those words have such a vague yet specific meaning depending on the person.
You can do this with the top four strings of a guitar since they are the same strings the baritone uses. Because of this the fingering and sound is the same.
This song literally means so much to me. I have had issues with my father mentally abusing me and this song just embodies how I feel. I broke down in tears the first time I listened to it. I feel like this song was written for me. Thank you.
I've just discovered this song two nights ago and I had the same experience, I cried while showing my mum the music video because she understands how significant this is to me. I've never found a song that expresses my complex layered feelings in such a concise and poignant way

I went to one and everyone was sO NICE!! like I’m normally so bad at talking to people, but it was easy there because everyone was just like me and shared a love for dodie :)
this song reminds me a LOT of my relationship with my mom, who in turn has relationship issues with HER mom, so the line “don’t say it’s genetic” hits pretty hard lmao i’m american but I’m sure you’ll do great on channel 4 tomorrow!! you’re going to ROCK it
guiltless hit me hard, it’s so personal and yet i can fit it perfectly into a situation i was in, and it vocalises how i feel in a way i never could 💕💕💕
I’m blessed. Dodie kissed me. Whoops is my gay showing? Happy pride month y’all! Love you dodie. Love this song. Thanks for making mind-boggling, amazing music!!
I remember when I first listened to this song in my first relationship and thought “I don’t really get it but it’s catchy” then recently left my hella controlling, emotionally abusive boyfriend and have never taken refuge in a song so much. I’m so glad someone put it into words
the same thing happened to me! my ex was incredibly manipulative and gaslit me and would do things to me that i didn’t want to do. and so over time i fell out of love with him, honestly it never was love. i broke up with him over text, not my finest moment imo, but i thought it was fine. and yet a year later, he still talks crap about me and is waiting for my current boyfriend and i to break up. “no use getting angry at the way that you’re wired” hits pretty hard
@@gud189 I don't think you need to feel bad about having broken up with him over text. If he was manipulative, you didn't owe him a decent in-person breakup, which would have been the right thing to do in a meaningful relationship. And the fact he's still talking shit about you and guilt tripping you is not okay, and it says a lot. It sounds like there are a lot of red flags with this guy. But like I said, you don't owe him anything. I went through something similar with my ex girlfriend. Frankly, I think you need to tell him to stay the fuck away from you, and dont be gentle about it. You shouldn't treat everyone like that, and its understandable if you feel bad about doing that because you're actually a decent person. But you shouldn't take his bullshit another second. You need to make him understand you don't want him bothering you anymore. You deserve better.
@@maggieo1683 thank you so much! i don’t even remember writing this comment but i’m in a much much better place now. a few months ago he mailed me a letter asking for forgiveness and telling me he “wished more than anything that he could give me a hug”. it was really weird but i texted him back and told him there was no way i could forgive him. he used my anxiety against me and ignored me literally the whole time we were together. good news is i don’t have to see him all day and from what I’ve heard he stopped talking about me, which is great
@@gud189 That's so great, I'm proud of you! I'm thrilled to hear you're in a better spot and you didn't let him back in, because he's manipulative and lonely. I just hope you're not feeling guilty about it. I did with my ex, bit it's best to realize when you're ready that you deserve so much better. Remember you are amazing and strong for having cut him off!
@@maggieo1683 thank you! I’m proud of you as well, it’s a hard thing to do! I definitely don’t feel guilty anymore, I think both of us have moved on at this point and if he hasn’t, that’s not on me!
The thing where you take your finger off and on is called a hammer on just if anyone was struggling wanted to look up videos off good techniques to help learn it, great video love you dodie 🥰❤️
This song describes a current friendship of mine and I cried when I heard this song for the first time. I finally had an outlet to connect my feeling to. Thank you🖤
Watching Dodie go from "I only know how to harmonize guys lawlz" to this musical little genius today is actually SO insanely amazing and I'm so proud of her I wanna cry. It gives me hope to learn literally anything and idk y but it does
"I'm not bitter, I'm just tired. No use getting angry at the way that you're wired" my ultimate favorite lines. The moment I heard these lines it dropped into my soul. It was almost like a trigger pulling out flashbacks and understanding after all my years. Whew, anyway. Great song dodie 💖 thank you for sharing with us
I thought the line was "You opened a door that I can't shut or walk through." You know, like a metaphor that kind of means "I can't reach you, but I can't get away from you."
aside from: i’m not bitter i’m just tired “i could never let you know, you’d never get it” hit the feelings i had around a very difficult, very sticky situation that never truly ended in a satisfying manner. it gave me the catharsis i never truly got so i appreciate it dodie❤️
My favorite line is, “not one shred of hope so I built up my own”. My friend drew me a picture of me with that line in it and it literally made me cry. I’ve gone through a lot, and realizing I had the power to change and make myself happy is what got me through. And having someone else see that themselves just really hit hard and made me so happy.
I love "Not one shred of hope so I built up my own". When someone makes everything you do seen wrong or bad and you finally escape that toxicity, you have to work so hard to un-learn it all and re-build mental pathways in terms of how you treat yourself
This is like one of those GENIUS videos and I am *here* for it! I saw you play Guiltless on tour and it's so beautiful to see how it has developed through production etc. I'll be sure to tune in to see your interview/ performance tomorrow!
Pretty sure I don't REALLY get Guiltless because my interpretation doesn't fit all the lines but it reminds me of me, forgiving people far to easily or not even bringing up that they hurt me because I don't feel like it's worth it even though it should be. Especially "I'm not bitter, I'm just tired, no use getting angry at the way that you wired" and "and I could never let you knowWWW, you'd never get it", that lines make me feel so understood 💛
This song is simultaneously so painful and cathartic, but it has helped me learn to heal after my best friend sexually assaulted me. Thank you for helping me heal and know i'm not alone.
"And i don't think i feel better if i open your eyes I'll carry your burden, till the day that you die" No i'm not getting to hard on myself. I swear- EDIT: That's my fav part i forgot tu put that
Ok, so I don't 'get' guiltless in the way that you designed it (curse or blessing????) but i can still relate to some parts of it, and overall it is a bop that i put on repeat and also calms me down when my anxiety is high :) also i'm going to make fanart of karaoke dodie's face some time soon :)
I love that you included the karaoke version at the end, it lets us all hear those little details that you talk about in the video and get a better understanding for how you put this together and your creative process and all that jazz :)))
It’s so hard living with an abuser that you’ve had to forgive and I felt so alone in my feelings until I heard this song. I just feel so seen. Thank you Dodie ❤️
This has just... Always been a song for me that explains everything. I couldn't say it myself because it's so much detail crammed into a song and it's a whole experience that I'm so glad Dodie could put into words. And this video talking about her writing process just calms me down for some reason. It's even more special after seeing her in Vancouver a few days ago!
I started therapy this year, but had to take a break because I didn't feel in the right headspace to unpack it all. Thank you, Dodie, for writing such a beautiful song that speaks to such a familiar experience. ALSO! I think Rufus Wainwright uses Bolero as well in his song Oh What a World. One of my favorites :)
This song hit hard for me. I have ptsd from trauma when I was 3. And the line “I’m not bitter, I’m just tired. No use getting angry at the way that you’re wired” just describes how I feel so brilliantly. I love you dodie.
I am not entirely sure if I understand Guiltless, but I relate it to my own experience. My dad often tells at me for my stupid mistakes (I have no common sense) and we're not very close. I feel like he doesn't really know me. Also, he's really inconsiderate and cares only about himself. So I feel like we're strangers and he doesn't realize that our relationship is bad. I think Dodie wrote it to be more complex, but I love it and it's beautiful. Dodie, you're awesome.
I went back and watched some of Dodie's old videos today and it's so nice to see how much more confident she is now than when she first got on youtube.
The classical piece is Bolero, by Ravel, which is actually thematically on point for this song, as it’s the same phrase that repeats over and over throughout the 15-17 minutes of the performance. It doesn’t grow or change, just has a new instrument added each time from an incredibly quiet start to a full orchestra. There’s a great RadioLab episode that talks about Ravel, Bolero, art, mental illness and dementia, for anyone interested.
OH MY GOSHHHH I've missed these tutorials Dodie!!! And hearing your thoughts on therapy is cool cause I occasionally have therapy sessions and it's great that you're breaking the stigma around it! (PS, Guiltless is such a bop and I have a lot of other things I wanna say but yeah, don't wanna bug ya so 10/10 video, yeah)
The song is both painfully relatable and healing. It must have been healing for you to actually put these feelings thoughts questions into words. Thank you for making something so difficult to make for yourself. Also thank you because despite being painful to hear, it's healing for me as well. Just thank you for being you ❤
DODIE I didn't get to watch you when you performed live on TV but I found a recording of it, and you did incredible. This was the video before something beautiful, not something awful or wrong. You're so amazingly talented and we all love and support you, even if you had messed up. But you didn't. And we all knew you wouldn't. And now we can come back and appreciate you instead of hassling you like you feared. Cheers. xx ❤
I know that Dodie is like famous now but I really miss hearing her life updates and her little video vlogs but I’ll keep re-reading her books just to get that dose of Dodie
me too, i hadnt realized how long it had been since she uploaded till i was looking for a cover and saw the month breaks. it sucks but i have a feeling it's better for her n her mental health so : //
I havent watched a dodie video for like a year. Shes like, so grown up from then?? So beautiful and herself. Go dodie!! I love your music and your blooming self!! 💕
Been watching you for so long and still your music is like therapy to me. This song reminds me of my mom and has allowed me to forgive so much that I’ve hung on to. Thank you so much Dodie. I love you!!
This is one song by you that I can say I completely and totally understood after the first listen. My life dealing with my parents and how they're actions have affected me is exhausting. I love them dearly, and they have always been there for me, but the mental anguish that has gone on in my house is where I get a lot of my damage. I thank you so much for writing this and knowing I'm not alone. I sing this and the emotions consume me and I just feel like me and you are with each other talking about this and feeling it together so thank you so much, again. I love you Dodie, I will always be on your team ❤️
dodie, you’re a genius for writing such a beautiful simple song that’s both jammable AND capable of explaining something so broad/confusing/traumatic. Thank you for such a cute video 💗 can’t wait to see your LA show in October!
i'm not very vocal on youtube, but just so you know: i love you, dodie! keep doing what you're doing because you're helping so, so many people (like me!) and they all care about you very, very much. :)
Wow. tysm for sharing. The first time I listening to Guiltless it hit me v hard. I wish I could come see your Nashville show 'cause it's my birthday!I saw you at a Nashville show on my birthday a few years ago and it is honestly one of my best memories!
one of my favorite parts is “a dark politician will end up alone” because it conveys a message without explicitly stating what it means, and i love that a lot
This song sounds like healing. Its almost uncomfortably honest (in the best way). Your song writing always struck a chord with me but this song is so absolutely brilliant. I’m always sending you love Dodie💓
my fav part is at the end of the 2nd chorus when it’s like guiltlleeeesssssss on an F# and there’s like a C beneath it and it’s dissonantly delicioussss
This song is so accurate to what I'm going through in my life right now with a few people but especially an ex and I just... it came out RIGHT when I needed it. Thank you so much for it. It is perfection.
“No use getting angry at the way that you’re wired” It’s a beautiful song, but that single bit gets me choked up every time... there’s a lot of other meanings in this song for me, all mashed together and it’s mostly about other people, but that bit is like it’s suddenly talking TO ME and not at the people I’m upset with. It’s so hard not to hate yourself for the way that you are, especially when it makes you think, act, feel or see things in a certain way that’s maybe not how you want it. I really love this song because for me, that one little repeated line reminds me that I shouldn’t hate myself as much as I do, for things about me that maybe aren’t really my fault. Thank you for another awesome song Dodie!
aw I made a typo in the lyrics lol soz
Getting your own lyrics wrong is a purely dodie thing 💛
Thank you for this song. I have had trouble forgiving someone in my family because of something that happened (nothing traumatic but still bad) and I would have really violent dreams about them (which is not like me) and I never knew why..I think It was because I had unresolved issues with them and never addressed it...I have never found a song that addressed my situation so clearly Thank you dodie❤❤
Don't worry we'll get use to it :)
no useD getting angry at the way that you're wired

My favorite line is “You opened a door that a kid shouldn’t walk through” just because those words have such a vague yet specific meaning depending on the person.
Maddie Kate I completely agree!! so cleverly written :)
What a brilliant lyric
Me too ugh it's so personable and ahhhhhhhhhh

dodie: take a baritone ukelele
Just use the first 4 strings of the guitar lol
her: take a baritone ukulele-
me, staring at the concert ukulele in my lap: *dodie pls*
Its just a D and a C
You can do this with the top four strings of a guitar since they are the same strings the baritone uses. Because of this the fingering and sound is the same.

Thank you for everyone who worked hard producing Guiltless!!
“do you ever get it when there’s a dark dark pit in your life-“
i completely agree dodie.
*its called my life*
This song actually kills me every time I listen to it. AHH 2015 DODES!
I went back and watched some of Dodie's old videos today and it's so nice to see how much more confident she is now than when she first got on youtube.
Honestly this song makes me feel seen, it perfectly describes the feeling. Thank you dodie for your music 🥰😭
GCSE revision can wait...
Ofunne Is your final exam on Friday?
Yup...gcse revison...who's she
Meeeeee!!!!
I’ve never seen anything truer

I still have 7 exams lmaoo
I just wanna support her she’s so vulnerable with the people watching this video, thank you your music and words are really impacting lives
Just thank you for being you ❤
Yes Dodie with that vandoren mouthpiece and rovner ligature 👌👌 and what looks like a buffet like okay flex
Rachel Krueger yess I fuck with rovner ligature, but I recently replaced my old buffet with a Backun 😂
Omg I love her. She is literally how I knew I was bisexual😍❤️
Mandy G saaaaaaame lol
Been watching you for so long and still your music is like therapy to me. This song reminds me of my mom and has allowed me to forgive so much that I’ve hung on to. Thank you so much Dodie. I love you!!
Ravel's Boléro is my favorite classical piece and has been since i was like 12years old i love it so much and i'm glad you do too!!
DODIE YOU PLAYING THE CLARINET WARMS MY LITTLE CLARINETIST HEART!!!!!!!!💖💖💖💖💖
dodie, you’re a genius for writing such a beautiful simple song that’s both jammable AND capable of explaining something so broad/confusing/traumatic. Thank you for such a cute video 💗 can’t wait to see your LA show in October!
Also guiltless is so beautiful and so raw and honest, and to connect with the lyrics and message makes my heart hurt both in a good and bad way
i'm not very vocal on youtube, but just so you know: i love you, dodie! keep doing what you're doing because you're helping so, so many people (like me!) and they all care about you very, very much. :)
thank u Ingrid !!

AHHHH DODIE! I'm going to your show in September for my birthday and I'm SO FRICKEN EXCITED!!!!!
Wow. tysm for sharing.
I WAS LITERALLY LOOKING FOR A TUTORIAL TODAY OMG THANK YOU DODIE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER
I love the whole song, it hits home for me because it almost exactly describes a situation I've been going through for a while. Thank you Dodie.
my fav part is at the end of the 2nd chorus when it’s like guiltlleeeesssssss on an F# and there’s like a C beneath it and it’s dissonantly delicioussss
Ooooo ya
This song is so accurate to what I'm going through in my life right now with a few people but especially an ex and I just... it came out RIGHT when I needed it. Thank you so much for it. It is perfection.
How am I supposed to sing the karaoke without laughing at the picture hahaha. Love you Dodie! ❤️
“No use getting angry at the way that you’re wired”
It’s a beautiful song, but that single bit gets me choked up every time... there’s a lot of other meanings in this song for me, all mashed together and it’s mostly about other people, but that bit is like it’s suddenly talking TO ME and not at the people I’m upset with.
Introducing the clarinet parts makes me think of coraline. So moody but so good
that new mouthpiece for your clarinet is hella good and also I really appreciate an artist using clarinet -a rare lovely thing
