When someone says ‘the issue with proxies’ the issue is almost never actually _with_ proxies. There’s countless SLD cards that don’t look like the card and are damn near entirely unreadable. The few ‘Universes Within’ cards WOTC released don’t have the alternative name listed, just an = in the collector info. People have alters that remove rule text. People run foreign language cards. None of these ‘issues’ are unique to proxies. If someone puts NSFW art on a proxy and plays it in public, that’s something the game store needs to be made aware of and sort out.

I really like the look of magic cards. I think proxies especially need to be legible and recognizable without being inappropriate or so close it could be considered a counterfeit. But I have other issues with proxies. Not just proxying in general, because proxying something goofy or jank that just costs too much because it's reserved list or limited in printing is one thing. Proxying an entire deck just because you want to have all of the best and most played cards is crazy. It's fine if you're in cEDH where there's a meta and it's welcome so that the games can all be competitive and interesting, but if you're just playing with randoms at an LGS or friends at a kitchen table, why can't you build a deck for $100 and be happy? Too much, how about $50? $20? It's possible and skilled players can figure out how to win this way and even get better. The bracket system might fix that. I will say there are other appropriate ways to proxy and play, but we've gotten so far away from what the game was meant to be and WotC is mostly to blame.

My proxies tend to be different card styles (such as a Legendary I proxied with the Doctor Who showcase treatment), but with the original art. The only cards I've used different art for are the OG dual lands, and I have one or two "alternate" art pieces that I always use for specific duals (and I still use the original art sometimes). As for anime, I'm not a fan myself, but my LGS sells packs of anime art cards that guys use as tokens. I prefer using the original tokens myself (and most of them are cheap enough that you can easily get some for whatever deck you want), but I've also proxied tokens for random things that don't already have tokens (such as those similar to Morph and Manifest, like Tezzeret, Cruel Machinist, The Cyber-Controller, and Yedora, Grave Gardener). EDIT: All of my proxies contain "NOT FOR SALE OR TRADE" down in the copyright line.

For personal proxies it is totally reasonable (ones that you make yourself) for it to be exactly the card being proxied. But I do have High Quality proxies of cards I own or cards that don't exist on paper (Alchemy) where the secondary market will not make copies of real cards because that would be a counterfeit. I have a HQ proxy of 'Key to the Archive' that is exactly like the Ikoria art with the original name underneath the proxy name. I guess you could call it a functional reprint. Allowing Sanguine Brushstroke to be used is one of the Alchemy cards I can get over, along with the crossroads lands. I will probably never play the 'Key to the Archive' proxy because people might think it too op. But I agree that the proxies should indicate on them what card they are and the correct rules text. I don't know why but I do feel kinda weird playing against or with a deck that is entirely proxied. I play with cards I own or cards that can't be purchased. There is a different conversation with if there should be a proxy limit. Proxying one copy of 'Crucible of Worlds' seems alright but proxying every card of a busted cEDH deck just to play because 'it's fun' doesn't seem right either. Do we even need the real cards anymore for casual commander? I think a few proxies you don't own is fine if it makes your casual deck work. But just going ham on proxying all the expensive cards and net-decking a broken deck is just silly to me.
I've never heard it as "goon" but thank you for helping keep us up with the young lingo. Have always disliked "gooning" of stuff. Don't play hyper sexualized items in Game stores, these are supposed to be family friendly spaces.
I do agree with the points of anything nsfw is just a go home and touch yourself moment. Thats not out for public and its not out for minors or it can just generally make people uncomfortable to have overly fanserviced pieces of art as something open on display. When there are markets open for that stuff sure but at an LGS where the audience is meant to be within wizards TOS age is just innapropriate.
I have ~50 or so high quality bootlegs (yes, they look real without a loup). I have them because I don't feel like even having the proxy conversation. I own several of them, but I play commander and cba to have more than 1 of when I mostly play a singleton format. I have them cataloged as fake cards and would never sell them as such. The nice part of only having bootlegs is they *always* look exactly like people would expect
So it depends on who you are playing with and where. If you're playing with your play group and you have custom version of cards in select layer style it fine as long as they're cool with it. Proxies not cool in any tournaments unless they're exact copies. I converted my Arahbo to a Thundercats deck the creatures are all in Ikora style cards with the real name of the creatures in the lower bar. The none creature proxies all have custom names too with the real name of the cards printed on the text under the cards. However all the text and types are printed these cards. Now play with random people is different and I wouldn't do it unless they're cool with it. I understand why people don't want to play against these type of decks and respect they're decision to do so. However understand the main complaint of not knowing what the cards are is a weak argument. Other than cards you play and or the most while know (and even then) we are always asking to view or explain what your opponents are playing. I agree that some proxies are hard to read or identify can suck to play against, there are plenty of official alternative art cards that are just as bad or worse. Like the text less cards or the weirder alternative art cards the don't really look like Magic cards. The problem saying these cards are lying and not the same cards they're proxing, is ignoring the fact Magic already has official cards that do the samething. It's only a problem if I try to put both the real version and the renamed proxy in the deck, claiming they're different cards, because it's cheating.
Secret Lair and Universes Beyond look NOTHING like the real cards. Many of them are difficult to read. Cards have been printed that have no text whatsoever. Anime cards exist. Anyone complaining about these regarding proxies should be talking about all those other cards too. If they don't, then it's obvious to me what their issue really is.
I have never understood people wanting to proxy. I have always played with what I cards I have. I can understand proxies for testing but not for actual play. Build and play within your means.
About Ramlethal, I play a LOT of guilty gear and can explain the age thing. Ramlethal and a lot of other characters are gears. essentially they are humans that got infected with a virus of sorts that turn them into gears. Ramlethal is a gear that was born of another gear which is where the age / physical appearance discrepancy show up. Gears age quicker than humans. We dont know Ramlethal’s age but we know other gears that are around the same level and time frame. Sin who is Ky and Dizzy’s son is 6. Its confusing so I dont know anything. Its weird really… Also, I think the dumb anime cards are fine if they are Tokens, but not actual cards. Like goblins. Anyway thats my two cents
If I didn't pay money to play, and there is no monetary prize involved, then proxy away. But if actual value is up for grabs, then buy real cards. That's our rule in my shop.
If you’d like to have an alt art for your commander I’m cool at least have the correct mana symbols on it. If you proxy anything else it’s mandatory to have the right mana symbols, the original name of the card or something that refers to the original name (post the enchanter etc.) and it should have the correct spell type and creature type as well as power/toughness on it. Choose any design you want it doesn’t matter. Communicate what you do. If you are using weird Manga Waifu stuff be aware I’ll never play steal and stash. I’m too afraid those sleeves are sticky.
So I feel your right about certain types of proxies . I definitely agree that if you wanna play a proxy of a card keeping the name and type and all the correct information is key . Like the Godzilla or Dracula ones . For example I own a copy of Akela the artful provocateur and I love bioshock the game series . As an Xmas present my brother is making me a proxy version of alela as Bridget tennenbaum (one of the characters) but we made sure to reference alelas name, type and everything else . The only difference being she makes a little sister token which is a replacement for the fairy tokens . However once again that token is functionally the same in type, colour, p\t, abilities ect . The only thing that has changed is the name and the art . Something like that allows you to play cool crossover cards while still keeping the information correct . Because at its base you need that information to be accurate. And yeah seriously guys keep it pg for god's sake I don't wanna see you drooling over your cards more then playing the game
My proxies go 1 of 2 ways. 1: just alternate art but still somwhat resembles the original. I have stained glass mana rocks in my cEDH deck. And duel lands with art depicting art that looks like it belongs on the card. Nothing crazy at all. 2: absolute troll proxies. Like a Force Of Will that has a picture of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. Or the proxy i will be getting for me meme deck which will be The Ancient One, but done in a secret lair style with the name of the card being "Mitch" with a picture of Mitch McConnell because i think it's funny. No cringe garbage, no gooner anime stuff (i don't even like anime anyways) just jokes or standard stuff. Also thinking of doing a proxy of Badlands but the art is either LA, Portland, or Chicago because funny.
Only in European events. And it was more to stop people from inadvertently advertising for other card games or third party accessory companies than it for censoring distasteful playmats.
@donb7519 it likely wouldn't. Thankfully my experiences have been relatively normal. A few cringe vtuber or anime tokens, but nothing crazy. I've heard some absolutely wild shit though
Ok fun police, enjoy your high horse. I have a Hazezon deck that's Dune themed. Each legendary creature represents a character from the books, and that character is represented in the art on the proxies. Text is the same except the name, which has the original name next to it in brackets.
Would you be mad and refuse to play someone who uses note cards as proxies. Ink is expensive and no job to pay for good proxies. The card has the name creature type, mana value, and what the card does, just not having the picture?
U dont need proxies to play the game at all. U dont need whatever expansive card u think u must have there are dosens of other options that are likely 10 times cheaper. Also i agree on they shouldn't be making custom cards that dont have the proper name or types etc. The problem with anime is the tourists that try to insert there ideals or act like sexy characters are evil in some way. Look at all the American stuff that is oversexualised that no one says a thing about any of it but the moment foreign stuff does it at all it's a problem suddenly.
Yeah... the Gooner cards are pretty weird. Look, whether or not Wizards chooses to cater to it, the game is largely for younger folk. Being the guy walking into a game with people that age and "showing off" you're obsession with hypersexualized anime girls (or girls in general, I've seen real people in compromising poses on cards) is very creepy. If you wanna play with them among friends in a private setting, go for it, but it's definitely inappropriate in public. There's a reason WotC doesn't print softcore pr0n on their cardboard anymore and haven't for literal decades. Because it's WEIRD!
Textless urza's saga and textless cryptic command existing as official promos makes this argument absolutely meaningless at least these proxies have words that can be read people need to chill
So I make custom proxies for decks and while I do often try to get different or alternate artworks for cards, I typically theme the entire deck around a frame style. So everything from lands to planeswalkers are in that frame which often requires me to do some decent photoshop work to make the frame fit. I also make sure to put the word "Proxy" down in the corner on each card besides the artist's name along with putting my own set symbol on the card. Even if I use the original art and frame I use those two obvious signs that say the card is fake.
I have a couple things to say here: First of all, when it comes to proxys and whether or not they are okay, I think you are overlooking people doing completely new art for the cards. I think that is fine, and even keeping the same text. I am even okay with anime art replacing regular art on cards, but they must be done well and are not gooner bait. Look, leave the crusty playmats and sleeves at home, but I am okay with alternate art. Secondly, and this is something in general, can we start talking about appreciating magic? All I see from content like this is the constant hate and doom clicking here. I've come to stop watching these videos because it is nothing but hate for new sets, hate for Universes Beyond, and hate for the game itself. Can we have more videos that spread the love of the game that we play and not the anger that we keep feeding into.
uuuuuuuugh. "printers are not accessible" if you live in the US, every single free library has access to a printer. You might need to pay a little bit for it, they usually have like a charge per sheet on top of like a $5 service charge. You aren't "too poor to print proxies so you need to stick a post it behind a sleeve." You're lazy.
First off cartoons are not real. So the cartoons have no age. Secondly what is wrong with drawing attractive characters in anime or anywhere else? They are not real
Hey there cartoon characters have an age that they are representing and saying that it’s fine not matter what that intended age is because the characters they are depicting aren’t real is real weird…

Remember in some places you have free printing at your local library.
I use anime mats and sleeves as a tool to gatekeep the hobbies and spaces I love.
My favorite is when it's the sleeves, the mat, the binder, and the cards
Based content creator and anti-gooner
Ayo, new Commander Complaints from Shaf dropped.
I only run proxy for commander now(except for 1 deck) but I ONLY use regular card arts, nothing custom
What i want out of proxies is not have to look up rules texts, so please have what the card does somewhere. That's all i ask
I use a completely different reverse printing on my proxies making them easy to tell apart from real cards.
Also as a yugioh player there are some WEIRDOS at locals. The worst shit is the mats tbh. You see some CRAZY playmats at ygo local events.
Didn’t they change the rule so only official mats and plain colors could be used?
Only in European events. And it was more to stop people from inadvertently advertising for other card games or third party accessory companies than it for censoring distasteful playmats.
@@sulemanzakriya only in the eu and only for more official events. So not sure if it effects the equivalent of fnm or a pick up game
@donb7519 it likely wouldn't. Thankfully my experiences have been relatively normal. A few cringe vtuber or anime tokens, but nothing crazy. I've heard some absolutely wild shit though
"These are functional reprints"
Whats the difference between Rick grimes and greymond
Ok fun police, enjoy your high horse.
I have a Hazezon deck that's Dune themed. Each legendary creature represents a character from the books, and that character is represented in the art on the proxies. Text is the same except the name, which has the original name next to it in brackets.
Glad you watched the whole video where he says if you reference the real name of the card then he has no issue with it....
me when i comment 8 minutes into a 20 minute video lmao
Headass alert.
Would you be mad and refuse to play someone who uses note cards as proxies. Ink is expensive and no job to pay for good proxies. The card has the name creature type, mana value, and what the card does, just not having the picture?
Anyone who unironically uses the word "gooner" should be dismissed entirely, even if they are making good points.
What is a gooner ?
Even if I use the original art and frame I use those two obvious signs that say the card is fake.
everyone using proxies is a clown that nobody should play with proxies are really really bad
I have a couple things to say here:
First of all, when it comes to proxys and whether or not they are okay, I think you are overlooking people doing completely new art for the cards.
You aren't "too poor to print proxies so you need to stick a post it behind a sleeve." You're lazy.
if you print fake cards out in your library you should be in jail

First off cartoons are not real. So the cartoons have no age. Secondly what is wrong with drawing attractive characters in anime or anywhere else? They are not real
Hey there cartoon characters have an age that they are representing and saying that it’s fine not matter what that intended age is because the characters they are depicting aren’t real is real weird…
