The paintings look nice. Thanks for sharing a new approach to painting abstracts. I am 80 years old and have not painted abstracts. Your paintings have given me a desire to give abstract painting a try.
Very interesting and fun stream. The idea of layers made in the fashion you did with the mark making tools was really inspiring. Thank you for sharing your creativity.
Love them Jackie (& lovely to see you use a gel plate which is one of my favorite art supplies :) Totally agree about the 'magic' that happens with seemingly invisible layers -- I've always loved Rothko's paintings (and knew in general about his painting methods) but I was utterly astounded when I finally saw one in person -- there are clearly layers and layers, evident but barely visible, and it's like looking into infinite space -- I haven't seen another painter do anything close.
I'm watching this again because I like your abstract technique. It's a more satisfying result, rather than using lots of stencils and stamps. Thank you!
Jan 10th - So I did it tonight Jackie! And as requested here is my experience. Background: My commitment for January is a page a day in my 8x12 journal and limiting my time to approximately an hour (what with the corporate grind and all!) So I just decided to follow along as best I could with your approach mimicking colours where I didn't have the exact and allowing substitutions along the way. I am pleased with the results - far from perfect, yet I had fun creating and it was solid learning. Like you I actually did two pages. I would have been better served to use my 9 x 12 gelli plate but it was fun manipulating the 5 x7 all the same. So -- once again thanks for sharing this idea and I'm really happy that I have this experiment in my first journal of 2023. Be well!
Way to go!!! I commend you on prioritizing your art making/self care! For what it’s worth, I remember trying to switch mental modes coming home from my corporate job and trying to turn on my easy-breezy creative mindset - it was often a tough switch. All that to say, if you find it hard to transition to art right away, don’t give up! You may find it helpful to add a buffer like a snack, cup of tea, or some other little habit/ritual that will eventually signal to your brain that it’s time to create. Keep showing up! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼❤️❤️❤️
I enjoy your videos so much, especially because you share your thought process. Understanding why you make the decisions you do actually helps me quite a lot. Thank you for the time and effort you clearly put into sharing your work with us!
My go to process is to create collage paper with the Gelli plate and make collages, but I have been wanting to start using the Gelli plate more in this painterly manner. Always inspiring, your process!
The first three layers are like a warm up and get me primed for getting into that creative flow. I put all of my doubts and hesitation into those first layers so they can be absent in the following layers. Beautiful video, love your techniques ❤
Hi Katy - I love the image of putting all of your insecurities into the initial layers and then covering over them with the top layers! ❤️ Often I feel most confident in my beginning layers, because I feel the most freedom, I suppose (and also bc no one will ever see them unless I want them too 😆). I’m going to think of you next time I paint ❤️
Loved it! Difficult to explain how much joy I get from watching you create. Definitely gonna pull out that 5x7 gelli plate and give this a try. As always appreciate you sharing your innovative approach!
Love, love, love! This is why art is so much fun, the possibilities are endless, it’s like magic watching the paints play off of each other and somehow, many layers creates body and depth that our brains can understand! We don’t always understand but our subconscious does!😅 very inspiring video!💕🇨🇦
So cool!!! I am your newest fan! I love abstract landscapes and as a prairie girl, our blue skies and vast open spaces are awe inspiring and perfect for abstract renderings. I too LOVE the Gelli plate and am always open to new ways to create with it.
Great video with lots of good techniques, Jackie. I have used my gelli plate as a stamp for textural marks--but stuck to an acrylic base--on a large abstract painting. I like the way you used it and I will try it. Thank you!
It’s always so good catching up with your videos Jackie and I love what you did here. I’ve used gelli plate collage papers but never used it directly, I love that textured depth it creates. Absolutely fab! Thank you 🙏🏼😍❤️
Wow... .I love watching your process, and the outcome was really lovely (other than the fact that RUclips shows your next videos right on top of the final product just as you are showing it!). I definitely want to try this!

Hi, a friend told me to check out Gel painting, but he said to be careful. There is a lot of silly stuff out there when you search for Gel Painting. He was right. Your work is so much fun, creative and beautiful. And now I want to try!!!
It's hard to tell how long ago you posted this but I really enjoyed the Creating Abstract Landscapes Using a Gelli Plate. I don't have a small one so I have been doing the initial creation of the sky/land/water . Then I really didn't pursue much more by way of layering. It looked so fun and the end result was so much more interesting than what I had done. Layers =history=interest. New mantra. Thanks so much.
I love these Jackie! I recently saw (Heartstone art?) fold her gel plate after she put the paint on it to create the horizon line. I love the experimentation with the gel plate!
Thanks for sharing - what an excellent idea using the gelli plate as a stamp! It has given me lots of new ideas for my own work. Also I notice you are using a colour shaper for some of the painting (in a couple of your other videos as well). I like that idea and plan to seek some out as well as for gluing.
Fabulous. So many interesting techniques and what a rich beautiful final product. I already had my gelli plate out so tried the rubber bands and was astonished at how well they worked. Not in the same league as yours but good enough for me to be happy :)
I don’t often use my small one - that was part of my reason for trying this out 😆 I suppose you could just use part of your larger one but the small one is pretty fun 😉❤️
Wow I loved this. And I'm going to have to try it. I always find it amazing that I often see suggestions in the side bar of things that have gone through my head. I've wondered what it would be like to use the gel plate to stamp on a painting with. And by that I mean a big painting. But perhaps I should have a go first in a journal or a small piece. Thanks for this video I loved it and the outcomes. And I've added you to my ever growing list of subscriptions.
