We were blessed with a generation of fine footballers at the time, but never (or very rarely) got the best out of them; our managers always picked a midfield four, when they really should have picked five, with Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard as the central 3, Beckham right, and A.N.Other left.

@@alfielee2989 Of the 5 players, Gerrard would have been the obvious choice as the defensive midfielder, with Lampard and Scholes just ahead of him, and Cole left, Beckham right. Why don't you think it would work? The reason our ''golden generation'' never achieved anything is that the central 2 in midfield were swamped by opposing midfields with more players in the middle of the park, while we stuck rigidly to our traditional 4-4-2. Cut your suit according to your cloth: we had an outstanding selection of midfielders, and should not have baulked at the idea of a midfield 5.

Terrible ownership and debt issues ruined what should have been a Gerrard Trophy dynasty. When we looked like true contenders under Rafa, with a solid spine of Carra; Xavi Alonso, Mascarano, Gerrard, Torres and co. The board offloading the better supporting acts to Gerrard stage, making Rafa leave and another rebuild in the process. I think that time was better than Rogers for Gerrard, and he was more dynamic and forward in his responsibilities. Always the big game player: UCL final, FA Cup final, Olympiacos, Real Madrid, and so many more.
What a man, Mr. Liverpool deserved so much more. There’s a reason Sir Alex wanted him so badly, as well as Mourinho at Chelsea, Inter and Madrid. Baller.

I think Gerrard not winning a PL title actually elevates his status. Hear me out - Scholes, Lampard, Keane, Viera, Gerrard... These are 5 of the very best midfielders the PL has seen - always in the conversation of who was the best. Gerrard is the only one of them to not win the PL but he is still considered among the others, with many considering him the best. To be considered the best (or top 5/3/2) of the PL without winning it shows how stand-out Gerrard was as a player.

And we all know trophies aren't the strongest case of arguing for a player otherwise we could easily be talking about Djemba-Djemba's or Anderson's greatness in history. Benayoun was a crowd favourite but also not world class. One of the better ones though yes. Skrtel was actually a frustrating figure amongst Liverpool fans, made a lot of mistakes but covered it up with some heroic goals and "hard" moments that added to his persona. Being Slovakia player of the year does not make you world class. Again these are the better names I gave and even these aren't world class. I could go on about regular first team deadwood players like djimi traore, smicer (yeah good goal against Milan but he's no De Bruyne), Milan Baros (don't be fooled by his good euros performance just like we were with el hadji diouf at a major tournament), Biscan and so much more. If Torres and Gerrard had remained fit for the whole season in 2008-09 we would have undoubtedly won the league that year. You have to remember that Torres played less than 25 games that season and Gerrard missed several games as well. When they played they were absolutely unstoppable. Those were good times. Look how many have won the league but never the champions league. Only Liverpool, Utd and Chelsea can say they have won the CL in this era, each winning it twice. Arsenal lost 06 and never get back to a final, Spurs lost 19 and now are a europa conference team. Man City the best team of the last decade made 1 final and choked. The best captain ever ...bar none, no one made more "Roy of the Rovers" moments, some players scored more etc, but the types of goals he scored, and when he scored them, just crazy.
West Ham FA cup final 3rd goal is just stupid
Goal against Boro at Anfield in the 04-05 season is one of the most beautiful long shots I have ever seen
His long passing was crazy, he was ultra complete, and in his prime was plenty fast, one of the players for Volleys ever, good in the air, set pieces, passing , give and go's, crossing, tackling, work rate, energy, stamina, intensity, courage, leadership, and determination at epic levels.
The fact that Liverpool manged to win trophies through our darkest times was usually down to him (sometimes he would have help from an Owen, Torres or Suarez). He is one of those players, I still can't believe some of the things he managed to make happen.

If you like your captains to lead by example, there were few better than Gerrard. But if you define a leader by how much those in the team follow him or how much that person elevates the level of those around him, then there's no one better than Gerrard.
As a player, I do think that he's underrated by the vast majority of people. One thing not mentioned in this video is how "clutch" the guy was over his career (no Olympiakos goal mention or video?!?). As a fan, you knew he ALWAYS was going to show up in big games. From a trophies perspective, he unfortunately wasn't always surrounded by great talent or great organizational infrastructure (I would seriously argue that Rafa Benitez was the best manager he played for. I mean how bad is that?!?). To those that want to ping him for not winning the Premier League, I would argue that him even getting close, considering what he was working with, is by itself a miracle and testament to his ability.

Could easily have walked into any team on the planet and do the job for you week in and week out. Could win you A game single handling and did so very often for Liverpool. His only downside was England never really seen that side of the Liverpool Legend we know he is along with the rest of the so-called Golden Generation which really frustrated me over the years. They were all guilty of it, playing outstanding at club level yet be very disappointing with England. Still, A near-perfect midfielder anyone would want in their team. In '62 he was injured early in the tournament, and played no further part, in '66, was injured again against Portugal ( who targeted him from the start, and kicked him all over the place). His swansong in '70 was spectacular, but so was the fantastic team he played in, and no way did he ''carry'' them. On the matter of whether or not Gerrard should have gone to Chelsea when he had the chance, it would probably have improved both Gerrard and Lampard as players, thereby improving the national team, but it also would have spoilt his relationship with the Liverpool fans: Stevie G may never have led Liverpool to the title, but he stayed true to the reds, and that is a priceless part of his legacy. Gerrard is much of the reason why I watch and support Liverpool. He embodied so much of the soul, spirit and heart of what Liverpool Football Club is. I'd very much argue that if he left Liverpool in 2005, we (LFC) would not be where we are now, possibly a type mid-table-team, maybe even relegation-material at some points. This especially with the amount of financial doping that's been going on since '03.
Support wholeheartedly those who say that the fact he didn't win a Premier League furthers Gerrard's legacy as one of the- if not the best- Premier League player of all time. I can't count the amount of times he (apparently) single-handedly dragged us up from what seemed hopless situations. Some of which was shown in this video. Olympiakos '04 is another big one.
