Welcome to Season 3 of my channel!
On this episode I explore the City of Mariehamn.
I got a close as I could to the windjammer POMMERN and tried to imagine around rounding Cape Horn over and over in her years of service as a merchant vessel taking part in the great grain races.
Later I found my way to the Åland Maritime Museum and was amazed at how extensive and beautiful this museum is. You can walk through the original "Captains saloon" taken from the doomed ship Herzogin Cecilie as she was slowly sinking off the coast of devon. I was also mesmerized by their authentic pirate flag dating to the 18th century, one of only two original skull & crossbones pirate flags still in existence in the world.
Making my back to Arcturus I find Neil has been on "Anchor Watch" all morning as the winds picked up and threatened to break our mooring line, eventually we made a plan and moved the boat down to a safer slip.
This season will follow my time on board SV Arcturus as we explore the Åland Islands and beyond. We sail into cities, tie up on small islands, anchor bows to and ride out a blow before heading back to Sweden. I hope you will follow along with us on the trip.

I presume the bad winds mostly come from the east or north east, sort of a sea breeze effect from the continent/Russia? Also the stern of the boat with the flag blowing over the dingy hanging from the davits at the video end seems to be a Irish boat(The green, white and orange are our national colours) and your location is quite a step from the ould sod. I don’t suppose there was a party/singsong led by the leprauchans in the sailing club that evening? I hear the price of booze is very expensive in those Viking lands so probably any serious drinking/partying would be done aboard!!! I was just wondering what temperature the Baltic Sea rises to during the Summer months, I could not see any steam rising from the surface? SkipRay, Kerry, “The ould Sod”

On the morning of the 25 January 1936 in thick fog and rough seas the 'Herzogin Cecilie' struck the Hamstone Rocks near Salcombe, west of Prawle Point in Devon. She was heavily laden with grain, on passage to Falmouth from Australia, 6 months later she was refloated and beached at Starehole Bay for repairs because she was not allowed access into Salcombe for fear of polluting the town from her rotting cargo. Poor decision making, summer storms and rocks in the area unfortunately finished her off. The world lost a beautiful ship and the only consolation is that she came to rest in a beautiful area off South Devon.
Remains of the wreck are still visible today at low tide in Starehole Bay and the unfortunate story of her demise can be read in a very fascinating account of her dying days with several interesting comments from people still connected to her and from families of the crew - www.submerged.co.uk/hertzoginececilie-wreck.php refers. It’s well worth a read. The strange thing is that her story was again repeated 71 years later just a few miles down the coast when MSC Napoli was wrecked off Branscombe Beach in Devon during January 2007 due to poor decision making by the Coastal authorities.

Most places have you go stern to the dock. Easier to get on and off
