Hello. You're right this is a terrible design by Generac. I've owned this model generator for 12 years. It's a fantastic generator and I've got a few hundred hours on mine because we've had multiple, multi-day power outages. But FYI, when I did change my battery, I did not have to remove the gas tank. If you take those side covers off, you can get slide the battery out more easily than you can slide the gas tank out. Then you should add the charging pigtail as this generator has and use a Deltran battery charger to keep the battery topped up and ready. I've gone more than 5 years on mine since I made the switch with no battery problems. And like I said, it is a very good generator. I guess no machine is perfect, but my neighbor has a newer Generac machine and his battery is very easy to access. I guess they got the message.
Thanks for this video. Was much better than another one I saw on RUclips. Took me about 30 minutes to swap out my battery and add a battery tender extension. I didn't have to pull the gas tank out all the way, I was able to slide it about halfway out and balance it there. Bor did undo both screws on the battery harness; I took out the top one completely and loosened the bottom one a little. After disconnecting the positive lead, I was able to slide the battery out, turn it to the side and pull it towards me. I did have to slide that side of the gas tank out a little more while doing this. I did a quick turn-over test like you suggested and it worked as expected. Then I zip-tied the tender extension cable to the frame (it's very easy to hang in out in the corner under the battery, not much in the way). I rerouted the vapor line and put the gas tank in position, then fired it up for real. Perfect! Before I put it all back together, I've ordered a replacement black fuel switch panel that I found online for $2.50 (plus $9 shipping, crazy!!!); mine is a bit loose/finicky. It's been years since my battery start has worked. Now I've got a new battery, battery tender and quick connect, and it'll save my arm in the future (but now that it's all working the power will never go out!).
Thank you for sharing and the kind comment! Glad to hear you are back up and running with the electric starter!! Please give this video a like and share my channel to help it grow! It would be greatly appreciated. Take care!
I cannot thank you enough for posting this video. The manual that comes with the generator is completely inadequate at explaining how to replace the battery. Your step-by-step instructions and pro tips gave me the courage to tackle this task. I even added a battery tender cable/battery tender to the set-up (something I had wanted to do for years, but was 'afraid' to take the generator apart). What were they thinking when they put the battery beneath the gas tank?! 🤯 Smooth sailing from start to finish, following your directions. Excellent video! Thank you!
I'm glad it was helpful and thank you for the kind comment. Thank you for sharing and all went well! Batteries fail and there was no easy access. I had to make this video :). Please give this video a like and share my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated!
Crappy GENERAC design, but consistently a great video.
Everything is more expensive while the quality is going down.
I also like to write the install date on my batteries.
Very good point. I do it on oil filters and the tractor batteries have the dates. Now I will do that to all generators. Ty!

That is a great idea to put the battery under the gas tank not a great idea to do that 😮😮 what were they thinking about when they did that
They weren’t! LOL
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines lol😂😂 glad you got it fixed up and running again

The Generac makers are making their stuff like the Car makers. You have to have be a professional to work on them. Great video Mr. Johnson.
Thanks Steve!
