My service dog is trained to help me with Narcolepsy, but I also had a non-working just a pet JRT who naturally picked up on when I was having narcoleptic hypnogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations and would bork at anyone who got near me. she was the most loving and snuggly girl, but if I was having a narcolepsy problem, everyone was an enemy.

Actually the only reason you're not supposed to wake a sleepwalker is because it can disorientate them and cause confusion. The best method is to guide the sleepwalker back to bed but you definitely can wake them up especially if they are about to do something dangerous.

But I do know my dad used to have horrible sleep terrors and would wake up in a complete panic almost everytime after talking in his sleep and saying some quite rude things if you did try to wake him up.
I had a family member who would go to their parents in a panic while sleep walking saying stuff like "the green beans are coming!" over and over. They couldn't calm him down and get him to go back to bed, so they found that taking him outside would help him wake up more naturally from the cold air. Then they could help him calm down and go back to bed. This was when he was fairly young and I don't think he has really sleep walked much or at all after around 10 years old.

Depending on the situation, it's not always a good idea to wake up a sleep walker. Don't shake a sleep walker awake! It can frighten a person if not done right and people could get hurt. If they're headed for danger you could try to gently guide a person away and sometimes that might be enough for them to start waking.
