I struggle with flat roots when I brush style because I’m wavy (2b-2C) on the top of my hair and 3A at the nape of my head. I have silky roots. I found if I only style by glazing the products and scrunching my wash day doesn’t last. I definitely like that control that brush styling provides me. I highly recommend for looser curls to use the Flexy brush from Curl Keeper because is the best when you brush larger sections which works the best for our pattern than taking small sections. Then I separate the sections with a wide comb. That technique had worked best for me.
Oh my! This is the most complete tutorial I've ever seen on brush styling! I totally appreciate all the tips about brush styling you included. Never knew how critical using the edge of a brush could be to help with creating the curl. I know I will watch this more than once. Thank you, Gena Marie.
Thank you Gena! My problem with brush styling was getting clipped up hair caught in a lower section. Now I’ll take care to draw the hair straight up and clipped. You covered so much in this video! I also appreciate a super strong hold gel does wonders and scrunching at the root for volume. And ALWAYS done with Wet hands. Ive used the Denman but I find the lavender Tangle Teazer is my favorite! I’m 63 and still learning techniques, thanks!😊💕💕
Very helpful showing the sectioning and vertical sections for brush styling. Thank you. And yes the tension when brushing is really important. Also, on days when I just don't have time, I use the scrunch it bonnet (with aeration holes) while I do my face and apply body cream. When I take the bonnet off, I have separated curls and I just spot brush to enhance ringlets and curls. Then I scrunch in more gel and diffuse.
Thank you! This was so helpful, I am about a month into the CGM and just tried brush styling for the first time yesterday with the tangle teezer brush. These tips are going to be so helpful! I really liked the specifics about the parting the hair in sections and being careful to section the top up and out of the way so it doesn't get tangled. I love and appreciate your videos! They have helped me a lot!
Thank goodness! I literally just brush styled my hair and it looked worse than ever- hair that is normally curly was wavy and flat. So I started googling things that would help, and your video came up.
Gena Marie, I had to come back and post I used a technique you showed about getting close to the root. I had a curl around my face that tends to be not so curly. WOW! That worked so well. Thanks for all the time this video must have taken. As I said earlier, I will have to watch this again and again.
Ha the problen I have is I have some peices that start out going one direction at the top then change to the other direction half way down ugh. I love your videos, you have helped me so much. Your curls and you are gorgeous!
Thank you for this! I had four brushes in my Amazon cart and was trying to figure out which one to get, this was very helpful! I haven’t tried brush styling yet, and I don’t want to buy four before I even know if I like it at all, haha!
This is going to make me sound so dumb, but I was having a hard time getting the hair to angle down to the handle of the brush. I realized I wasn’t wrapping it around the brush as I was moving through the hair, so it was ending up super separated and limp. So I literally flipped the brush upside down. Seriously. Just hold the brush by the handle with your hand upright like normal, but with the actual bristle part facing down. I found this makes it way easier to naturally just pull and have the curls get down to the handle part. Hope this helps someone as bad with 3d spacing as I am 😆
Have you seen the scrunchit brushes? There are two. They give great tension and are round on most of the outside... It reminds me of a curling iron and a beautiful had a baby... It is also good for short and long hair. (I don't work for them!)😀
Thanks Gena! Another good video of yours!! Really some great tips! My single biggest problem is my thinning hair on top...i did buy the Curlsmith Thickening Lotion yesterday so im going to try that today & im going to order the Briogeo Vegan Boar brush..thanks for your help! ❤
Gena Marie, I wanted to make another comment. I recently bought AG Recoil with your discount code. I like it for refresh days. Anyway, AG sent me samples of their Vita C shampoo and conditioner. I just tried them today with my usual stylers ( Yre Luxe Leave In, Curlsmith Full Body Thickening Lotion, Tre Luxe Hi Def Gel and Tre Luxe Reflex). I didn't apply any other gels which I usually do. I have seen a distinct difference. I love the elasticity I got. No frizz, my hair stayed moisturized all day..not usual for me this winter without deep conditioner which weighs down my curls. Just wanted to mention this shampoo and conditioner in case you wanted to get a sample and do a review of them. They promote them for Strengthening, Elasticity, and, for the conditioner, moisturizing. No stringy hair either!!!
I have tried so many times on my wavy hair but does nithing- it just flops straight down. The main problem I have is once Ive done a liwer section tge next section up gets caught up in the lower section and pulls apart what Ive already done. I just end up frustrated and give up.
I learned a lot from this video. I have low density hair and two cowlicks on top of my head. So I have to use every trick possible to keep my scalp covered. The horizontal layering tip is particularly helpful. Have you tried the hair tool called Antonucci? It’s absurdly expensive. I bought something like it a loooong time ago for less than $10, but I had no idea what to do with it. Once I started fixing my hair curly I started using it to curl my hair in small sections. It works great on my fine low density hair. I would be interested in what you could do with it. Thanks for the great videos. 😊
Oh Gena! This is such a great video I shared it with my FB group and have to tell you I went out and bought a Tangle Teaser brush today, came home, spritzed a section of my day 3 hair and brush styled that section. I get it now! I was able to creat beautiful ribbon like clumps that actually curled when I jiggled them, scrunched a bit and when they dried there was ZERO frizz, I am so impressed! I couldn’t get these type of results with the Denman although it was moderately successful, the TT has really upped the success and I am so grateful to you for sharing and educating us on curl techniques!!! Thank you so much!!
Great video, Gena! Your hair turned out probably the best I've seen it look 😍 The tips most helpful to me were which way do my curls go and how to use, and which brush I need, to get ribbon curls vs the stringier kind I've been getting with my denman. Very helpful! Thanks 😊
I have fine hair I use the scrunch-it brush has a round handle it help my ringlets. I struggle with my bangs is a different texture and always in my face. Thank you for sharing tips and tricks ,I get great results.
Which curl cream and gel are you using? When I add gel, it tends to take away slip and it’s hard for my brush to get through, especially Ouidad, or other gels that seem to flash dry.
Wonderful video, Gena! Thank-you so much for for making it for us.I had given up on the Denman as my hair fell out, so it’s great to know that there do exist other options.
No matter which way I style my hair, my curls need to be refreshed on each subsequent day. I use a bonnet for sleep, good hold gel...just never holds up.
Their could be two causes for this. You have type 2 hair, or you are not past the first year of your natural hair journey. Type 2 hair will always loosen on day two and on. It's best not to stress about making your curls look as tight as possible. Day one will always be the tightest day for type 2 hair. Instead enjoy all the stages of elongation, that take place one day to the next. Think of them as different looks and enjoy those loose beautiful waves. Though if you are beginning your hair journey. Have any heat or color damage. You will get past this stage. I also had this problem for over a year. Now that my damage is gone, I do not have the problem of loosing my definition on day 2, 3 or 4.
I have low density, fine hair. 2c/3a I have some tighter curls in nape area. What helped me hold my style is wrapping my head in a silk scarf. Head upside down, everything goes upwards. I wrap it and the top is left puffy for the curls. My hair is on shorter side. When I take the scarf off , the curls are nice! 😮 I think it’s because the hair isn’t moving around. I found a bonnet is too loose for me and it’s like it does the same thing as sleeping on a silk pillowcase. Hair goes all over. Still protected. It everything gets a little messier and I have to refresh. Ugh I’m constantly chasing after the beat method 🤣 I use different methods and brushes depending on mood, weather , the look I want etc
I had the same problem, it turned out it was because my bonnet was too big and my hair moved around too much. Maybe try a smaller bonnet or use a scarf to customise size?
@@rachellep2581 yes, that is most of the problem. I have many type 2 areas and lots of loose waves on my sides where I sleep. I have not been able to get the scarf thing down. I keep trying but I just can never get it to stay. All my bonnets are big and I stopped buying more because I just have been unsuccessful in finding one that is small enough. I tried the Scrunch-it sleep bonnet...the elastic band is a bit much on my ears and forehead but so far that one works best since it is adjustable. I dont have damage but do have more and more grays that are super wispy so there is that. I may have to give in and try coloring it to see if it will help.
Great video, Gena! I have recently tried brush styling with the Tangle Teezer and have finally been able to have some success. Thank you for all the tips! 😊
Thanks for the tutorial 🙏 my problem is no matter how much I wet my hair or how fast I try, in the process of styling with any technique it dries. I hate that I have to wet my hair constantly. I think I have low porosity hair or something. Another problem is sectioning my hair. I try different techniques but in the process it gets out of my control and gets messy. It's like the sections I styled are getting dry and the sections that I'm styling are going to destroy my beautiful curled ones. I try to use those purple clips you used but do you have other tips for this issue? Thanks 🌷
My curls after washing and styling when its dry it always combine with each other no matter how many tmes i separate my curls always get combined plz tell me what should i do nd i hve one more request plz tell some hairstyles for coaching bcz i am not allowed to open my hair so plz tell some hairstyles
I have several brushes and can use 2 different brushes or techniques when brush styling. I have low density, fine, 2c/3a curls. I also use a bone comb once in a while for something different. I just ordered the Denman teaser comb. I like what a regular teaser brush does but I notice more friz on day 2 when I use it. I think the Denman teaser comb might do the trick. I also like the Denman mini. My hair is shorter so the bristles and size are perfect. I like to experiment with brushes and products. I need to stop!!! 😂
I have curling brushes for my hair and I can't seem to style it with my brush I tend to just style with my hands vs a brush. I have a denman detangler and a couple of styling brushes
@@wendylees4382 yes I know. I have the small clump and it works pretty well but I am interested in trying the larger one. The small clump also has large tooth comb on the opposing side of the brush and occasionally I catch my hair in it when turning the brush. One more thing..the Scrunch it brush doesnt have aas many dense bristles so tension must be achieved using your own brush styling skills
What’s the cause of wonky curls? Is it that I’m bad at brush styling. I must confess I get frustrated with brush styling so tend to do 3 sections and just pick up random pieces to style
How do i protect my curls from wearing headphones i work at an office and i have to wear headphones for my shift and it leaves a dent on my hair any way to fix it?
I think I’ve got the styling down. What I have trouble with is keeping it like that the next day. My hair coils a lot and they look good the first day but the next day they’re frizzy. I’ve tried the pineapple , with a bonnet, and the bonnet alone. Nothing seems to help. I either end up ponytailing the next day or wetting my whole head again, which I don’t want to do everyday. I also started using the Giovanni gel and my curls don’t last as long. What is stronger?
I recommend a better gel that is strong hold. The Giovanni gel was very drying for me and didn’t work well. I know a lot of people love it though. Apply a cream fist for moisture and then use a strong hold gel like this Ouidad one: bit.ly/3Q9XlkM
