Should I make a part 2 sharing how to fix a bad hair day with refreshing? Also, be sure to save the blog post as a helpful guide for identifying what went wrong in your wash day: genamarie.co/2022/07/causes-of-failed-wash-days-frizz-stringy-limp-curls-flat-roots/
I'm glad to hear from someone else who combs through her gels (as opposed to just "glazing"), otherwise she gets uneven product distribution. Thanks, Gena!
I recently discovered that the reason for my awful looking curls is air drying...diffusing really helps sooo much with shrinkage, which is nice for me because my hair is more on the wavy side and still transitioning.
This was super helpful. My curls are flat, I realized I used too much cream after my wash today :D I've been hating my curls all my life and 2 months ago I've been starting to embrace them and learning about curls ^^
Glycerin on my hair turns my hair into a frizzy mess in the summer with any level of humidity. Really makes a difference knowing what works in which season!
I’m a male with 2b wavy hair to my mid-back and realizing your own hair is science a lot of trial and error when it comes to finding a effective hair routine don’t give up.
Hey! I still haven’t chopped off my hair into a pixie again. I’m glad to see new videos. I’ve trimmed the sides and back so the top can maybe catch up. FYI to anyone who cares, I had major hair loss after the stress of divorce and Covid at the same time last fall. Like over 50%. It was bad.
Sorry to hear that you went through all that stress. I hope you're doing better now😊 Has your hair regained it's density? I'm going through the same thing for different reasons and my super thick hair has lost about half of it's density and I'm scared it's never going to come back. 😕
This is an incredibly helpful video! I think I am using too much moisture because I was attributing the frizz to dryness. Seeing examples In Your own hair was exactly what I needed to see. You are my very favorite. I learn so much from you, and appreciate all the work you do.
Yes me too! My hair tho feels soft! Alamo a bit mushy (which I just found out I probably have too much moisture) but it frizzes so I kept thinking it’s dry 😀😭
Thanks so much for starting the video mentioning transition! I've only been doing this a few weeks and had a horrible wash day today and was getting discouraged. It is a journey!!!
I really love that you experiment with "hair fails"! Other Curlies experiment with products and their results always seem to look amazing. It's so helpful to see your process and how you diagnose the issues with the routine you've used.
This is one of your best videos that really helped illustrate different problems. Actually seeing what results you got with or without certain products or ingredients was great. Thank you!
Amazing video Gena! So much valuable information. Thank you once again for the informative, well researched, and perfectly presented video. Yes, I’d love to see a part 2.
I don't use any product since the 90s. I haven't died my hair in 15 years. Even freshly washed hair (with or without conditioner) I still get stringy hair in high humidity (frizzy-curly horse whisps though)
I'm growing out my hair and lately I start out with great curls but by the end of the day I've got the worst looking hair. This is great I'm going to try a few things! I'm going to look up your refresh.
Your lack of moisture day is how my hair turns out. I try to counter with a curl cream, but them I get the result of not enough cast so maybe I use too much leave-in/cream before the gel. Looking forward to part 2.
Love this! Thanks gena. The other day i saw ouidad curl products at marshalls and now i need to go back to see if its the one you mentioned in this video. Hope its still there
Would love a part 2... I am just starting out, so I wash and go at least 3-4 days before washing again-regardless of how it is looking ( which is for the most part bad). Would love some advice on what to do on the between wash days to try to repair the troubles.
I am BRAND NEW to trying to go curly. You are very informative. Tell me why you prefer to use cream under your gel? Is it a moisturizing thing? Do you also use a leave - in conditioner?
Nope, for the most part I just use a cream and a gel. If I just use a gel, my curls dry out, like in the example I showed in this video. My hair needs the moisture layer first.
Agree on Ouidad Gel and Recoil. I can on use the original (white bottle not red) and get in trouble with too much recoil. Have to really emulsify. Hood drying to set initial cast then diffuse helps with curl setting also. Part. 2 on refresh would be good.
I have the exact same issue with the curlsmith shine gel, it's also the reason I clicked on this video, looking for ways how I can actually use up what I bought 🙈 luckily it's a travel size 😁 Maybe I can try diluting it with water next time.. Love your videos!
Definitely try water. I have a thick gel that comes in a tub that I could resist buying because it was on clearance for a dollar and the only way I can use it is spraying water into my palm and mixing it together.
Thanks for making this video. I would love to see a part 2. This boar bristle brush that you are using; how is it different from the Behairful brush and what are the differences in the results on your hair? Thanks so much.
Great info, thank you. I would be interested in how to fix hair after a bad wash day. I'm sitting here with wonky results lol. I haven't used hair products in my hair or done a deep condition since the end of 2019. Staying home meant I didn't have to do anything with my hair. I need to bring my hair back to life with some hair dye and deep conditioning, and maybe a professional hair cut. I stopped using Devacurl because my hair was falling out and their products made my scalp itch. I was among the people that had issues when they rebranded. Anyway, 2 years was enough time to let my hair rest. I bought the curlsmith line and will be experimenting to find the righ products for great reaults. In my research I've found your channel and like what I've seen so far. I'm going to subscribe and I look forward to watching your older videos to see your hair journey as I embark on mine 😀. Have a great day, and thank you again for the video.
Very informative. I have natural curls and never gave them a lot of care. Your video inspired me to do so. Question: how do you sleep, in order to keep your curls intact?
Hi Gena, I know everyone's hair is unique I personally have had no luck with Ouidad or curlsmith and there gel (Ouidad) 2nd ingredient is glycerin of witch I avoid even tho it has the polyquats. My fav is the 4 in 1 cream and hi def gel by tres luxe I have 3B ish hair ..... and I never dry my hair I sit in front of fan works for me!
Hi Gina, would you please review the “colour wow dreamcoat for curly hair” there aren’t many reviews on it and I’m intrigued but it’s quite expensive for something that might suck haha
Thanks for another great tips video! So much great information! Have you tried Miribel Naturals products? I've been wanting to try them, but waiting for your review! 😊
I hope that you can help with mine. I have very flat hair on top and sides, very curly in the back. I would just like help picking the right products. I am using Moroccan Oil Products right now and my hair just goes flat. I have watched a few of your videos but I am a bit confused at which products to try.
You have said that swimming can dry/damage hair. I love swimming in the summer (fresh water lakes). What do you suggest to help protect the hair or manage after swimming?
Hi Gina! Loved the video as always ❤️ Do you think that heavier water pressure has an effect on the results of your wash day? I see a lot of curly tutorials where they’re using extremely low water pressure almost like a sprinkler when washing. Would love to know your opinion on this & maybe could be an idea for another video like this. Much love xoxo.
I do notice that! My hair is delicate and hard water pressure definitely does a number on my hair. I have started washing my hair in our guest bathroom because the I can adjust the pressure from the faucet in there.
No, I do not advise washing daily. I wash about 2 times a week which is ideal for my hair's moisture cycle. I refresh on the other days if needed. I think diffusing when you refresh is okay, as long as you're not using high heat or doing it for too long. When you refresh, your hair should only be slightly damp so diffusing should only take a few minutes to "set" the gel cast again.
hey gena! i’m travelling to the caribbean in january and it will be very humid. my hair is low porosity and fine and i’m wondering which product to buy. i’m would like something with humidity blocking sun too if it’s something that exist lol do you have any suggestions for different price range? thanks!!!
Ok, when I comb my products in, it destroys the clumps and I end up with limp, flat hair. How do I restore the clumps without diluting the product? I have baby fine, high porosity, low density hair. Wind is not my friend. Humidity is not my friend, working out destroys my hair. Well nothing right now is my hair’s friend. Help, need help.
Does this work with an Afro or buzz cut as well? My hair is super short so sectioning and brushing through is kinda hard for me, but I still wanna try all of these tips and tricks
I needed this video!! I struggle with bad wash days. I’m a 2B 2C girl, and I have either the soft curl or lack of definition. I love the As I Am products, but I guess they don’t love me. Thank you!

Yes! for someone who has very frizzy hair, glazing is not enough. Frizz pokes through!
I recently discovered that the reason for my awful looking curls is air drying...diffusing really helps sooo much with shrinkage, which is nice for me because my hair is more on the wavy side and still transitioning.
Yay! Im so glad you tried it. My hair dried hair looks awful and never lasts but a few hours.

Live in Florida! Thanks for humidity advice.
Hey gena can you do curly hair routine for Indians with indian products!!
Flaxseed gel does really well on my hair in the summer humidity as long as I don’t add glycerin to it.
This is terrific information. I would love to see the part 2. Thanks!
Thanks for giving such great advice on frizz control. I will experiment more with my gels and styling products.

I like this one better because its not as rough on the curls. The bristles are synthetic and I think they glide better.
