Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji Maharaj (the eldest son of Shri Guru Har Rai Ji, the seventh Patsahi (Guru of the Sikhs) established his dera (Establishment) in this place on Chaitravadi Panchami (the 5th day of Holi) in 1676. To commemorate this occasion Jhanda (The last clip of Video) Fair is celebrated every year. The name of the city is also derived from the dera established by Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji Maharaj which was initially known as Deradun and later became Dehradun.
Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji Maharaj was bestowed with many supernatural powers and was known for his benevolence and magnanimity. Such was the magnificence of his personality that the contemporary Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb conferred the title of Hindu peer on him and asked the king of Garhwal to make suitable arrangements for Guru Maharaj Ji on his arrival in Dehradun. The king of Garhwal, Raja Fateh Shah donated three villages immediately while four villages were donated by Raja Pradeep Shah to Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji Maharaj. In 1687 his soul reunited almighty God.
Since then the affairs of Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib are being managed and administered by Shri Mahants (addressed as Shri Maharaj Ji in reverence).
Besides the present Shri Mahant Devendra Dass Ji Maharaj, nine Shri Mahants have ascended the throne. All these Shri Mahants are known for their Charisma, intelligence and compassion for the common man. Ninth Shri Mahant Indiresh Charan Dass Ji Maharaj had added a new avenue in the activities of Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib by founding Shri Guru Ram Rai Education Mission in 1952 with the axiom, “to provide quality education at affordable rates to the masses”.
The tenth Shri Mahant Devendra Dass Ji Maharaj added new dimensions to the social service and pursuit of Shri Gur Ram Rai Education Mission by starting Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Shri Guru Ram Rai Medical College, College of Nursing and College of Paramedical Science together with renovating and strengthening the existing institutions. Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital and all these institutions are the epitomai of quality health care and excellence in academics. Many National and International awards have been conferred on Shri Mahant Devendra Dass Ji Maharaj in recognition for the exemplary contribution of Shri Guru Ram Rai Education Mission towards Nation building under the leadership of his Holiness.
