So is it easier to visualize this as the major scale with a flat seven or to think of it as a whole new scale? Basically how are you thinking about it when you’re improvising over chords?

This is a great question! Personally I always think of this as a separate scale when I use it improvising. If you already know the major scale all over the neck its useful when practicing to reference your knowledge of the major scale shapes to come to grips with it but when I'm actually using it I like to think of it as it's own thing. This is because to me, improvising happens to quickly for me to want to add mental hurdles. It's a quicker thought process to think "ok play G mixolydian" rather than "ok play G major and remember to play every F as natural"

Ok great. Thinking about it a little more I would agree with that. Like you said, I don’t want those extra mental hurdles when the cords are going by so quickly.

It’s a partscaster made from a Squier Affinity body, pickups, bridge etc and a fender roasted maple neck. I also refinished the body with dollar store acrylic paint and some rub on polyurethane. If you’re interested in more specifics I have a video all about it on my channel!
