Steffi was such a dominant force. Once in a while she didn't play well but she was human. Her and Monica were such a breath of fresh air after watching Martina and Chris for so long.
Thanks for the upload, great match! This is the best match i've seen Manuela play against Steffi. She was serving and returning really well here, and her backhand was on point. Such a shame that she never had a win against Steffi; that really surprises me as i remember them having some good matches.
She actually did beat her once....in the early 80s....however I think they were juniors and it was a third set tiebreaker. Also another little known fact is that Mary Joe Fernandez....whom the officla record shows, like Maleeva, is 17-0 against Steffi also beat her once....around 1987 in the Cap D'agde...also winning in a third set tiebreaker. Unfortunately for Mary Joe it didn't count as a win as it was officially it was an exhibition. A bit like that tournament at Mahwah, New Jersey.

@@Calicokit101 Mary Joe Fernandez won an exhibition match against Steffi in 1992 at Cal d'Agde, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Of course, exhibitions don't count. The players very often taking it easy and focusing on entertaining the crowd rather than hard nosed match play. I remember watching that match live and Steffi didn't make much of an effort in the third set.

Calicokit101 that was Katerina who beat Graf as a junior. Manuela never managed it.

Manuela played well. But beaten by Steffi
It is eye opening to realize just how U.S. centered the WTA tour was in in the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s.
I suspect some of that may have been due to the sponsorship by Virginia Slims. Also how so many of the top players in that era were American.
