Maleeva was certainly one of the most talented players to never take a major title. Up there with Sukova and a few other gifted ball-strikers. She may have been mopey, but she was mentally strong and hit a beautifully clean ball.

The surface looks literally carpet to me, I wonder how it feels to play on it. Also there seems to be a groove where the lines are, I imagine the bounce will be tricky if the ball hits the lines

Manuela , you played great tennis ! You might have been even better if you could have let go of your disappointment and anger . That is one thing that Monica was able to do . Complain then forget about it .

I really despised the times when players like Graf complained about Monica's grunt Monica had grunted her way to the top even beating Graf out for #1 and suddenly she was told during a match to breath different. Monica tried but couldn't play her game anymore and lost. She was holding her breath .

If anyone elevated women's tennis it's Monica Seles . Her opponents should see how Monica elevated their 1:10:59 game . She left everyone a little bit better . It's the best way to improve , by playing better players .

I was always surprised watching C K-S. She was very tall but had next to no knee bend on her serve. Her serve was all arm, she really didn't get her body weight or lean into the serve much. But somehow she made it work for her. The other thing I noticed about her technique, she used all wrist and a big back swing on the forehand side (backhand side was flawless in my opinion). She could do tons of damage with the forehand, but it could go really bad if she was nervous or having an off day. Dangerous with that much wrist in the shot. Anyway, she had an amazing career and was super talented... it's just I was always surprised someone as accomplished as her seem to have some sub-par technique.

Steffi was such a dominant force. Once in a while she didn't play well but she was human. Her and Monica were such a breath of fresh air after watching Martina and Chris for so long.

Chris was just not enthused when she hit a great shot or too disappointed when she flubbed one die to impatience and slightly irritataed playing the slow game she had trained all of 84 and 85 to speed up in order for her to compete better with Martina. Maleeva has a calm patient mindset to trade ground strokes all day long. She didn’t outhit her she lulled her to disinterest.

Bonder accomplished so much from plain hard work and endless drills. She doesn’t move her entire body in to a shot athletically, like a dancer. Quite in fact the opposite, she plants her feet and uses the planted foot to hit off the ground and make a swipe at its she doesn’t have feel for the ball . She strikes the ball as she guesses but doesn’t feel the ball with her grip - how long the ball is onbb by the stringsect. Almost like she’s opposing the ball when she hits it , can’t tell as an observer whether the ball is landing short or too long . Maleeva has a sense of balance and ball control where her technique will win over time . Maleeva had wins over evert and Martina .

Martina commented after this match about what an excellent returner Manuela was and she was right. She never got the credit she deserved.

Martina was gunning for that 9 thWimbledon and after winning in July relaxed a bit. Compare MN of 89 and 91. Maleeva here is hitting weaker than any of Everts regular shots. Martina made sure to play her best against Chris but was stunned by Maleeva consistency and her ability to reach balls she hadn’t before. If Martina had to hit a fifth shot she missed. She didn’t practice enough for this open and I wished she skipped it to enjoy her Wimbledon win more . Maleeva , Austin jeager Mandlikova Goolagong sukova we’re in a unique class of women who beat evert and Navratilova. Small group for a 15 yr period.
