Sleeper, Planetary, and The Authority were some of my favorite comic series growing up. This takes me back.
This is a series that reminds you how amazing prime windstorm was.
Brubaker and Phillips are a total power couple. Their work in Reckless is some of the best detective fiction I've read in a long time. Then again, Ed Brubaker has always been the best writer of crime/noir comic books around and his multiple works with Phillips are always excellent.
I love stories like this. Stories from the perspective of someone in a superhero universe where the superheroes showing up is the ultimate "oh shit" moment. The heroes are there to do the good work, nobody is questioning that, and we get to see what happens when they bust in through the skylight and all hell breaks loose.
Thank you, Mr. Parts.
Just want to say thank you for your original video on Sleeper. I'd never heard of the comic until then and it's since become one of my all time favorites.
As a fan of the original Wildstorm Universe (warts and all), it's great to see someone taking the time to delve into one of it's coolest books. Sleeper is great work, and easily read outside of the Wildstorm universe, though it's a great story if you're a reader of the other titles.
It's a shame the Eye of the Storm/adults only era for Wildstorm didn't last longer. It was, by far, the best creative direction for a universe that had outgrown it's Image years silliness.
I love this duo they make some of the best comics.
Tom Kings Human Targets seems to be trying to channel Brubaker and Phillips Sleeper, and fails in the process. Thanks to bring this book to the light of readers who might have missed out in its original run.
No problem! The good news is it's reasonably recent work and it shouldn't be all that difficult (or expensive) to find.
Brubaker & Philips really haven’t missed.
Soon as I saw the thumbnail I knew it’d be a Brubaker comic.
This looks good though.
Wow, this sounds like a series I can get into! I've been looking for something that is mature, intriguing and that is from a time when I was still reading comics when younger, and this seems to meet those demands. A complete noir-y spy storyline (yes, that rhymed nicely, in my opinion) that is composed of self-contained episodes? Yes, sir.
I would also like to thank my fellow supporters of this channel. You help allows me and others to enjoy fine comic book analysis.
Until next time. 🖖
Love reviews like this. I love comic books but it can be so hard to find the good ones worth ready. This sounds like a great series I will be sure to pick up
It is highly recommended. And I hope you enjoy it, if you do pick it up!
OK, you just sold it to me! Dunno why it flew under my radar when it was being published but that falls right into my wheelhouse so I'm gonna check it out now.
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it.
Loving these detailed reviews of comics I've barely or never heard of. Keep up the good work bro
"Sleeper" is the best work of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. I love the art, the characters. They should bring this back!
My only complaint about your channel is the amount of time between videos. Love your work, guy.👍
Human Target (DC) is coming to an end soon. You *absolutely* should do a video about that and yes, this time spend some time also appreciating its stupendous art.
Awesome
on the topic of this amazing duo, could you talk about
“Kill or Be Killed” it’s some of their best work.
One of my favourite books.
I like this one more than any of the "spiritual sequels" the team made at Image. Kinda crazy how versatile Wildstorm was.
Lovely update on the original video! I really need to get around to wildstorm.
I read all of Brubaker/Philips work in order of publication and before reading I expected Sleeper to be of the least interest to me because I knew nothing about Wildstorm. It didn’t matter whatsoever and can be read completely independent of any other books in the imprint, not only that but it’s a genuinely riveting story that keeps you turning the page. They have been a golden collaboration from Day 1.
I would love to see this channel look at their whole career through to Reckless, their Gotham Noir graphic novel is also worth a read
I agree with this 100%. I think I tried it on a whim, having no interest or knowledge of the Wildstorm history, and it had me hooked.
Hm. A retrospective of Brubaker and Phillips? I'll see if I can get together a bibliography and maybe give that a try. Thanks for the idea!
Excellent video, sir. I enjoy all of your content. Looking forward to more deep dives in the future.
I binged Sleeper a few years ago. Very compelling series.
Sleeper truly is fantastic :) I love that lovely alchemy you talk about, the synergy that comes about with certain writer/artist pairings. It's definitely there in Sleeper, for sure, but have you read Nexus, by Mike Baron and Steve Rude? Another perfectly suited pairing -- Baron's writing is quirky, with whimsical elements, with a fun sense of humor, but also gets quite dark, tragic (not lurid, "grim n' gritty" dark, although Baron can and has done that too). Rude's art (especially with the help of Eric Shanower and Les Dorscheid later on) more than meets the challenge -- it's hard to not go on at length, but Steve Rude clearly belongs on the Mount Rushmore of American comic book artists, along with people like Jack Kirby and Wally Wood. I'm almost positive you've read it, given what I've seen of your videos thus far, but in the slim chance you've missed it, do check it out.
Also, not for nothing, but I'd love your take on Bill Willingham and his comic the Elementals, as well as his later, highly celebrated work on Fables.
Brandon Graham Prophet video?
looks like a really interesting read. cool video
Wow, I never heard about this and I want to read it right away. Great Job!
This looks cool. I've seen it around. Maybe I will try it.
I love superheroes
Thank you for redoing this one, great as ever! Did you also do a Wildcats 3.0 video at one point or was that a delusion of mine?
You are not delusional. At least, not regarding WildCATS 3.0. I might redo it, though. But I do believe someone pointed out a very problematic area of the title, so I think that's why I originally pulled it? I can't recall.
@@StrangeBrainParts I believe there were some less-than-great depictions of SA in Joe Casey’s Wildcats but it’s been a long time, I’m not sure. Would definitely be something to acknowledge, but I’d love to see that up again!
That's exactly what it was...some SA that I didn't acknowledge in the original. The concept is pretty amazing. If only it didn't have the one thing, you know? I'll take a look at it again and see what I can with it.
Very nice and concise (Hah, rhyme). What other videos you have since made private are you planning to re do?
Honestly, I'd like to remake them all. With a fuller script and better vocals, of course. In fact, this week I was thinking of doing five altogether and release them one a day for a week. That's pretty ambitious of me, though. :)
@@StrangeBrainParts it's great you're trying to improve them instead of just trying to make us forget their existence. Take your time and keep up the good work.
Thank you very much! The earlier stuff wasn't fully formed in so many ways. A lot of that material needs a more mature, polished approach. In other words, I don't think I did the topics justice.
A brubaker Phillips noire classic
I love this book. I’m glad they reprinted the omnibus.
You should do a video on The Authority
Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips can't do no wrong.
Yes
I'm sure you're drowning in enough comics at the moment but I thought I'd chip in and recommend a great noir comic from 2000AD, Button Man by John Wagner and Arthur Ranson (Although Book IV's art is done by Frazer Irving, with colours by... Fiona Staples? Huh, that's a surprise). Basically, hitmen are hired to hunt each other down for sport, with a "3 times and you're out" rule. Would recommend.
The one thing Sean Phillips can't draw for sh!t is people smoking a cigarette (see the woman at 4:37 and again at 5:38 here). The one thing Sean Phillips does do a lot is draw people smoking. Is fun. See also, more generally, Incognito, the other perfect Brubaker/Phillips Super hero noir
it connects to my favorite member of wildcats Grifter
Loved sleeper but the ending irritated me to no end
How is it that remakes and rereleases of videos on this channel are better than the reimaginings of recent comics.
That's too kind. Thank you.
Great video! What are your thoughts on comic-arcs being presented as seasons of stand alone comics or limited series as seen in Gerber's Hard Time and Brubaker's Criminal?
Also, in an earlier Q&A you mentioned that Sleeper was a comic you were shocked got cancelled, are there any other comics extinguished in their prime you liked or were shocked were unpopular? A personal favorite is Gerber's Hard Time
I'm good with the Season type of arc. As long as that's the plan from the beginning and the creative teams wants/needs time to recharge. If I remember correctly, Sleeper was broken into seasons in the hopes that a new number #1 would give it a sales boost. (Citation needed. Heh.)
Hard Time is another good example, but I wasn't shocked it got cancelled. Just dismayed when it was. Clean Room is another one. Saucer Country I also mentioned in that livestream. Captain Britain And MI-6 (I think that was its title). Young Liars. Those would be a few examples. Oh, and Gerber's and Skrene's Omega The Unknown, too.
@@StrangeBrainParts Young Liars was pretty good, i am verily excited for the new "season" of Stray Bullets which is set to debut soon
Jim Lee at DC was the biggest publishing mistake in the history of publishers. He's ruined DC.👎
