I've been watching Agora e Serio on RTP with Portuguese subtitles. It's a funny show and uses everyday language.

Netflix has just added a "filter" feature. Now you can find films based on original language, available dubbed language, and available subtitle language! Films found will depend on where you live but here in Canada there are lots of European Portuguese.
Unluckly you cannot watch most of the programmes if you are outside of Portuguese territory, and some of the programmes that appear searching that way don't have subtitles, but even though it is a quicker way to find subtitled shows. Thanks!

I originally found you on RUclips when I was looking for Portuguese programming. Following your suggestion to watch interesting programs in Portuguese with Portuguese subtitles, I again turned to RUclips and found A Espia. I just watched chapter 1 in Canada. I can’t thank you enough for this information. I have lived 3 years in Portugal and thought my knowledge of Portuguese would rapidly expand if I could watch programmes with subtitles. The hours I have spent playing with the settings on my TV thinking I could manage to magically switch them on!
However, I did find it quite useful to watch English language programmes with Portuguese subtitles on Netflix - though you have to be mindful that the translator may take shortcuts and do an approximate translation of what is being said - presumably to avoid a lengthy translation that can’t be read in time before the scene/dialogue moves on.

Omg I grew up watching rtp with my family hahah
I am a big football fan and watch as many Portuguese games as possible. I also use this as an opportunity to improve my Portuguese by playing the radio commentary from my phone (usually from Antena1) through a Bluetooth speaker while having the TV on mute.
Generally speaking I find that the audio from the radio is a few seconds behind the TV but I can pretty much synchronise the two manually by just pausing the TV for a few seconds. This way I leant a lot of Portuguese football terms.
Here in the UK many Liga NOS games are shown on Freesports (season resumes tonight) while European games with Portuguese clubs are often shown on BT Sport.

What should I watch being a beginner?
Thank you. I have been trying to find movies or TV in Portuguese on RUclips and Amazon prime and as you may guess all I can find is Brazilian content. I was able to find some interest Europortugesse footage on RUclips with no subtitles or closed captions. When I tried the auto generated captions it didn’t always understand which made me wonder if the auto generation would work better in Brazilian Portuguese. Sometimes what it generated was downright amazing.
Yes putting on the automatic captions can end up confusing you more are they can be so inaccurate.
Hi, Liz. I realize that this video is six months old, and I see that a number of people have raised this issue below, but I followed your instructions to the letter, and I can't seem to get these subtitles to work. I must have tried nearly a dozen different programs listed on www.rtp.pt/wportal/acessibilidades/legendagem_teletexto.php, and not one of them had that 'CC' button in the top right, only a 'settings' cog wheel and a 'share' option. I also looked under 'Acessibilades' under the video, but no luck there either. Is it possible that RTP is no longer offering this service? (A few of the news programs I clicked on did have an on-screen sign language interpreter.) Thanks so much for taking the trouble to read this and for all your helpful videos.

What I like about it is that it gives an insight into how the portuguese society has evolved through the decades, do you know if there's a subtitled version of this as I can't seem to find it. Thanks

Well, I once saw the scripts of Inspector Max, a police dog show aired in TVI. It's not subtitles, it's the full script, and I think sometimes it doesn't match exactly what is actually being said, but it may help.
You can find the program (series?) on TVI online, or somewhere in the TVI site.
I don't know about the script, if I find it I will say something.

Thank you for the information on RPT. I find the following also useful:
Netflix - Create a new separate profile and change the language for that profile to Portuguese. This can only be done on the website and not via the app. Many children's programs (someone mentioned Disney) then become available in a choice of European Portuguese or English with subtitles in your choice of EP or English!
Apple TV - Most English language shows appear to be available with Portuguese subtitles which is brilliant for learning.
Text to EP speech - www.naturalreaders.com. The free version works great with different speed settings. I find the reading clear and natural. It's good for reading along to any topic of your choice. For pronunciation practise, select a slow enough speed for your level, then mimick the reader out loud with a few seconds delay to make sure you pronounce the words exactly as they did. Keep practising the same piece (keep it at a paragraph or two at a time) until you can correctly pronounce every word at normal speed simultaneously with the reader.

I found the page at 2.06 but not one programme had the cc in the top right corner. I'm in the UK using an Android tablet. Also downloaded the App. But no CC. Anyone please, what am i doing wrong?

Thanks for the great video Liz, I've been desperately searching the internet for portuguese programmes to watch and I've downloaded a VPN that allows me to watch some through RTP. I like to watch reality TV, do you know if there is any on RTP? :)
Which VPN is it? See if you can get sic mulher or tvi reality for reality shows! Even if they are in English with PT subs it is great for studying. I have learnt a lot of dating vocab from Love Island!

I don't think its you doing anything wrong, I think some shows have subtitles available on live TV, but then the subtitles aren't automatically enabled online. So we still need to hunt around for what has subtitles and what doesn't!

Trying to make sure I am arriving there with some or more than some Portugeese.
I tried to go to the website you pointed to and my computer comes up with a blank screen that says on top "403 Forbidden". I am in the USA.

I started learning Brazilian Portuguese and would like to continue but also understand the Portuguese accent too but in those small clips I couldn't understand the accent at all.
It is hard to tune the ear in after being used to Brazilian Portuguese!
Actually there are some series with European Portugese audio on Netflix, maybe they're not the best ones but still, "Once upon a time... life" is always great!
If you download "language learning with netflix" you have a wide range of languages to choose from. It's mostly series/films for kids but I don't mind watching them from time to time :)
Unfortunately it seems that you have to be in Portugal in order to access RTP shows. I guess I could look at trying to get a VPN. I can watch live things but they don’t have any subtitles and I’m not that advanced as of yet. Any suggestions?
I've always used a VPN so I can access British TV in Portugal, as far as I know its the only way! There are lots out there that run free trials if you want to give it a go.

I am so frustrated by RTP; I try to follow your instructions exactly and cannot. I'm searching for A Espia on RTP Play and I can't find it!! I am IN PORTUGAL. I have UrbanVPN, I have Express VPN, I try turning them off, nothing works. I find shows that look interesting, and I can't get episodes to play. I open shows that are supposed to have legends, and there's no CC box. I still get "sem direitos". I am at my wit's end: 5 hours at this. I'd like a live lesson with you with screen sharing...
Hey, I'm sorry to hear this - the programs that are available change all the time, but following the instructions should work to find something. I just found this one for example: www.rtp.pt/play/p7697/depois-do-crime If you are in Portugal you shouldn't need a VPN.

I’ve been able to watch RTP international, and RTP 1 and 2 through the RTP app, it’s good, I’ll look to see if they have the subtitles on the app or if I have to go the browser.
PS I’m 37 and I’ve never heard of teletext

Talk the Streets New Zealand. And unfortunately it still happens even if I NORDVPN myself to a Portuguese server. If RTP doesn’t let you watch on demand outside of Portugal or Europe then it won’t just be me who has a problem.

I like to watch Disney+ with Portuguese Audio. However, the subtitles do not match up with the audio. I still think it is a good resource for someone who is more advanced and would like to stop relying on subtitles 🤗
How did you find the portuguese audio? I can only find spanish, german, english and french... only portuguese subtitles
@@luis160427 it depends on the show. Most Disney classics have it. So far I have watched Ariel, Pocahontas, Hannah Montana, That's so Raven, Kim Possible, The Proud Family, and Elephant... There are many more

Yesss I thought I was being so smart when I bought Disney DVDs but as you say, the subs dont match the audio. At first I thought it was a space issue but it's not, it's like they have been working from different scripts? Super annoying. Some YT channels do the songs with.subs which makes me happy. And I will totally be doing Disney themed lessons in the future watch this space lol
