His points of what the violence is likely to perpetuate for Palestinianians in the future are valid.
The problem is a lack of knowledge about history by leaders of the worlds Democracies. Democracies.
This history that goes back to WW I and the defeat of the Ottoman Empire by the allies and the subsequent "guardianship" given to Great Britain.
The Zionist movement, born in the 1800s, was able to influence the British Mandates so that Israel could eventually become recognized as an independent country at the expense of the indigenous Palestinian people.
The previous Land Law of the Ottoman Empire in 1859, expedited the ability of Israelis to move to Palestine from all over the world and buy Palestinian lands.
The Zionist goal was for a worldwide population of "homeless" Jews to finally have a national identity.
Hitlers Holocaust during WW II created significant guilt for the allied nations because they all hesitated to enter the war and then stop the murderous tragedy because of their own national politics.
Israel, to this day, has benefited from this international guilt over their suffering during the Holocaust.
Palestinians should not be satisfied with losing their lands and suffering under Israel's infliction of an apartheid like governance over them.
Israel should strive to be better than this because they know what suffering and being disenfranchised as a people is all about!
Until world leaders develop the moral and political courage to insist on a just solution for Palestinians, there will never be long term peace and the eradication of terrorism.

The journalist was the devil's advocate asking all the questions that the majority of American politicians and the press are churning to the public , and the Palestinian American historian replied soundly and coherently; it was a cry from the depths of humanity, that keeps being ignored and silenced. By the way, fortunately what is hopeful, is that there are many Israelis that would agree to a significant degree with Rashid Khalidi.
He has failed to discuss Islamists and Jihadism. Failed to mention that the chief instigator of the Arab-Israeli conflict 1920-1960 was the supreme Islamic leader Mohamad Amin Al Husseini. Izz A Din A Qassam brigade of Hamas is called after a Jihadist born in Syria who moved to Haifa to preach Islam and organized Jihadist gang in the 1930. He skipped Islamic radicalization of the whole Arab world in recent decades. He spoke like an advocate lawyer not like a historian.

This is how an interview should be conducted on such sensitive and controversial issues, pressing and probing yet maintaining respect for the interviewee by letting them do most of the talking.
Some journalists do not flow with the guest, listen to his answers and so on. All they want to do is to read out their prepared questions out to get them into the time slot. Others are worse they push their personal point of view.

But knowing history and learning from it is totally different to using it as an excuse for terrorism & islamic conquest over peace (Hamas goals). And does occupation breed violence, or violence breeds occupation?
And Jews & Arabs both had their own state, it was arabs that rejected the UN deal, not the Jews. the Jews just kept on being attacked and they kept on winning defensive wars.
Also, the only reason Palestinians can't be free today is because of security: Hamas is intermingled with them and a terrorist threat to Isrealis. I have heard old Palestinians report life was good in Israel before terrorism became the strategy.
Every other country on earth was also occupied at some point, and without islamic inspiration + terrorism people learnt to share and get along. Muslim Arab Israelis don't have this problem, because they are not a terrorist threat to israelis.
How can you expect Palestinians to have freedom of movement, when them getting close to Jews is a terrorist threat?
That is why Palestinains used to be very free, before terrorism was used as a strategy.
I also don't feel owning my homeland is a right, esp not if i am a security threat.

Thanks for the interview. I appreciate the context around what happened in Gaza. I found that the interview tone and questions were a little slanted but Prof. Khalid I was successful in getting his point across in a measured and factual way.

It’s surprising to see Amanpour give a platform to prof. Khalidi after seeing her explicit bias in her interview of Yuval Harari. It was so explicit that she helped him answer her own questions. The explicit bias by this interviewer was still obvious, but I was pleasantly surprised to see a mainstream media outlet allow the other perspective some airtime.
Yes I was wondering if the bias was related to donors, or if interviewer was pushing hard in order to get answers to valid questions people have. Great interview though.

@@RobPires No matter how many times a lie is repeated, it never becomes true. Zionism (the national movement of the Jews to return to their homeland) was started as a political movement in 1881. Before then, Jews prayed for their return to Zion/The Promised Land (for the divine promise see Genesis 15:13-21 [esp. 18-21], 17:8, Exodus 13:5, Numbers 33:53-54, 34:2ff[borders]).
Europe did NOT create a Jewish State in "Palestine". The Balfour Declaration (1917) only expressed British support for a "Jewish Homeland". It was only after WW1, was Palestine created--the name the British gave to the area of today's Jordan and Israel. In 1921, 80% of Palestine was given to Abdullah to establish the Emirate of Trans-Jordan. The other 20% became The British Mandate region (in which a Jewish and Arab Agency were established to prepare the respective groups to assume sovereignty). In 1947 the UN created a partition plan for "Palestine". The Jews accepted it, the Arabs rejected it and upon the declaration of the creation of Israel, the surrounding Arab countries launched a war. They weren't successful in completely destroying Israel and in the ensuing 75 wars have launched other wars.
Lastly, please read the Charter of Hamas to see just how peace-loving they are. The PLO revised its Charter but they're also uninterested in coming to terms with (the State of) Israel.
Prof Khalid can speak as softly as he wishes, he's still not truly interested in being honest.

The past is prologue.The long shadows of both the Nakba and the Holocaust are very much a presence today. Long standing issues have been simmering for decade and by all accounts have been never adequately addressed . Trauma begets trauma, which often is expressed as violence.
And until each side is able to acknowledge that they have done things that have harmed/wronged the other, and/or to acknowledge the negative impacts their actions have had on/for the other side, any efforts to create lasting peace will not get far.

This conflict could have been put to rest decades ago if the US & UK had put extreme pressure on both sides to accept terms.

As Michele says, the big issue in the Israel/Palestinian conflict is who gets to say when history starts. That said, the Hamas attack was outrageous and was designed to elicit the most extreme response from Israel, presumably for Hamas's political reasons. I have no idea what can be done. If a country had done this to the US, I am pretty sure that we would totally destroy it if we had the means. I am certain that Hamas would do the same. There is no morality anywhere.

He answered her remarks about Peace Proposals very clearly, exposing their intention to maintain the occupation of Palestinian land. Also, he responded very well to her excusing of US “attempts.” As well, he addressed her downplaying of disparity in the numbers of deaths. I did not realize that the US wouldn’t allow elections. 😣 there are protests happening right now within Gaza and innocent people are being killed by the Palestinian Authority (PA). My understanding is that Palestinian people are angry because they are not being protected. You're wrong, the Palestinian Authority was violently expelled by Hamas from Gaza 15 years ago. The same was true for the Israeli occupation. It was ungovernable. Hamas has had total control.

It has nothing to do with oppression. It has to do with religion. Almost everywhere in the world where there is war and violence there is religion at the base: Nigeria, Jemen, Syria, Libya, Iran, Soedan (remember Darfur?). The Arab world didn’t care. But now Israel is involved and they all start howling. If there is anything that causes this misery it is the latent hate for Jews.

I see many comments stating that Gaza is not occupied and that Israel disengaged in 2005. However, when they disengaged they put a temporary blockage on Gaza followed by an indefinite blockade on Gaza in 2007. The UN, International Committee of the Red Cross, and many human-rights organization continued to consider it occupied as Israel military controls Gaza's borders, airspace, and sea access. Due to the Israeli blockade, Gaza suffers from shortages of water, electricity and medicines. The United Nations, as well as at least 19 human-rights organizations, have urged Israel to lift its siege on Gaza. So they still control the movement of all goods and people.

Though delivered with courtesy, and while the interviewer allowed Khalidi to speak and complete his thoughts, virtually every single question contained an inherent bias alligned to the State of Israel. It’s subtle, but always there, and this more than anything needs to be unpacked and explained.
I didn't take it as bias. I looked @ Michel's approach as getting his take on common preconceptions that r out in the public on this subject. By asking about the other perspective she gives Professor Khalidii a chance to rebut it & therefore a lot is covered & people won't say it is a one sided interview.
@@juliebraden If that were the case, why not establish from the beginning that the questions are explicitly about testing common preconceptions. No such qualification is given. Khalidi is experienced, and a serious scholar in the field. But it's not difficult to feel the weight placed upon him by the line of questioning, which I'm sure he faced a million times, because it's pretty much the base accepted reality in polite circles, because of power and vested interest, and the entire pyramid of meaning and supposed truth that permeates events on and around this issue. You can see it in his face. At any rate, if we cannot discern in detail the biases present here, there's no hope of getting out of the infinite regressive loop of tragedy we see play out again and again.

I found this interview disappointing. He holds that Palestian terrorism is a reaction to Israeli terrorism and vice versa. in that case neither side has moral authority. Might makes right. Israel is clearly the stronger party and will therefore will always win. Sad for the Palestianians. He talks about how all previous peace proposals fell short of Palestinans' absolutist agenda. He never states what Palestians are willing to offer by way of compromise. People have to each take a step toward one another to make peace.

As someone far from the Gaza and Israel, I tried to understand the brutality of it all. I was told that you can't see things in insolation, that you need to have context and understand history. I tried. I tried my best to understand context and history. All I saw was claims and counter claims. History and counter-history. I was deluged with a lot of "the truth about (placeholder)". I saw a lot of "what about (placeholder)". The 'context' and the 'history' from the 'experts' left me even more confused. I asked myself 'what is the truth and where do I stand?' a million times. It felt like I was asking a grotesque question - 'who has the least blood on their hands?'.
Only one thing was crystal clear... the killing of hapless innocents has to stop NOW.
That's where I am at. And I know no better.
