In my opinion, any decent gen 4 nvme ssd, with heatsink to minimise heat will work fine, even if let's say the max sequential read speed is like 4500mbps. Loading a game usually won't be sequential and won't utilise the max speed anyways. Even if there is some difference, maybe a couple of seconds slower of loading won't affect your gaming experience.
Digital Foundry did a video on using a slower SSD and tested it on Ratchet and Clank and it worked fine and just like you said there was a drop for a split second on one occasion.

Gen 4 PCIe is backwards compatible. It’s not a hardware issue, it’s a software issue. Sony intentionally prevent you from using slower gen 3 or 4 drives. Surprise, surprise, ratchet & clank, the game that no pc could run, eventually got released on PC and this ssd can run it perfectly as well. Maybe sony was exaggerating when promoting this thing.
Why is everyone ignoring what Mark Cerny said last year about the ps5 ssd being technically better architecture then nvme ssds because it supports 6 true priority queues instead of just 2. And that the nvme ssd would need to be actually faster than 5.5 GB a second to compensate for that.
Cerny did say that, and said he thought 7GB/s products might be required to simulate 6 priorities, but Sony didn't have SSD products to actually test back then. The good news it is seems like 5.5GB/s is enough to get near identical results. Two possible reasons, (1) the external SSD does not have to reserve IOPS for video recording and other OS functions, and (2) even 5.5GB/s drives have almost the same latency to first byte since the lane speed is still 2GB/s/lane PCI 4.0.
Noob here but why is this drive not reccomended? It lags behind by like a second.. Fire cuda 530 1 TB=350 cad and fire cuda 520= 175 cad on sale like huh?
If you really want to test the drive then you need to test things like Miles Morales Spider-Man with its less than 2 second fast traveling and Ratchet and Clank rift apart with its world loading in less than 2 seconds. That's where I would be worried about this SSD making you wait instead of the nearly seemless transition you expect to get.
I'm always going to buy a decent gen3 over a gen4. In fact, I'll always recommend a gen 3 because they are half the price. Why would I care about half a second longer load times? All console players were used to hard drives so they're going to be happy regardless.
The problem is that certain future console games will require gen4 speed to function properly.Gen3 drives will cause those particular games to not even boot and/Or repeatedly crash.
The only advantage of NVME of any gen is file transfers. Application loading is CPU dependent and even a SATA SSD would have been more than sufficient. It's all theoretical marketing BS and SONY just doesn't want end users to tarnish their image.
@@BrooklynBalla Actually, an external 7200rpm HDD works just fine. It's just slower. It also depends on the game. I would recommend placing ps1/2/3 games on an external HDD as they are older and do not need the extra load speed of an SSD.

in my opinion the full performance of those speeds are not being utilized. I don't believe it will damage the drive if its a little under minimum specs. as long as there is a heatsink it will be fine. If games load instantly on ps5 then its a different. The direct storage implementation of the rdna2 gpus will be the bottleneck of these pcie 4.0 drives because of the xbox series x . so ps5 exclusive might only be able to use nvme at full performance. but only like god of war 2 and future ones. Does anyone know if the Samsung PM9A1 will work? It's an OEM version of the 980 Pro so I guess it should work, and it's by far the cheapest one I could find.
Slower NVME SSD should just be limited to PS4 games - the majority of people have far more PS4 games than they do PS5. Pretty much should be treated the same as external storage.
Let's be straight about this... Gerald (it helps if you name your enemy I find) the Seagull is very much the sort who would pinch a screwdriver... A wallet... Your daughter's heart... HE MUST BE STOPPED!
Games running ps4 code in back compat are irrelevant... the whole point of the specs is to have ps5 native games run properly, but there aren't many of those.
LOL Why do yall think your PS5 is going to explode if you use an under par SSD? Also, you know damn well there will be a bunch of folks using cheap SSDs even though they have a backlog of 500 games they've spent thousands on.
Why literally nobody does the test with Ratchet and Clank with these subpar SSDs if that is the game that is literally built over the NVME architecture?!?!?!?! 😵💫 SMH
You opted to live near the coast, so seagulls are inevitable, haha. I love seagulls, I find them majestic and quite large birds. And very smart. And thieves, if they notice you are walking around with your fish and chips, they will attempt to grab it from you. I still like them. They are quite cunning birds. Back to business; I believe you made a major err in this case? You played games on the "sub-par" Seagate FireCude 520M.2 SSD WITHOUT any heat sinks? That skews the results too, would it not? (when you started showing us some games) But I'm more furiated about the fact that Sony, unlike, let's say for example, QNAP, do not list what M.2 Sony has validated. QNAP puts in a lot of efforts into their Compatibility Lists, I can't understand why Sony can't think of their customers and do something similar. But I do not want to bicker, I won't be getting a PS5 any time soon.
Can you confirm/test if these drives effect the UI at all please? I had to stop using an external SSD as it lagged the UI so much! So I'm interested to see if the power of the NVME eliminates this issue.
i agree, i think these ssd are taking stress of the internal ssd that comes with the systems. games look extremely crisp and responsive. DIGITAL FOUNDRY did say the internal ssd does get lag from it always recording in game actions for saving. so when the m.s is in use you do see some better performance when games are on the m.2 and not on the ssd internal drive. i have a WD external drive, that performs slower than ssd that i find. xfer from usb to ssd is extremely long wether its internal or the m.2
You are using an external SSD for PS4 games? I am too but the UI shows no difference in speed. What kind of external SSD are you using? I'm using a Samsung 860 EVO 2 TB.
@@robertlawrence9000 my SSD was an old one, nothing special, used to use it to boost speed with my PS4 lol But noticed noticeable menu lag with the PS5 with games installed on it, which is why I presume (hope?) a fast external drive or NVME will eliminate any lag. No lag with an EVO is very encouraging! :)
An SSD drive that is ~5GB/s raw, means ~9GB/s compressed, thus is pure I/O terms the PS5 can fill all of RAM in 1-2 seconds, Insomniac has demonstrated doing that in ~0.5s with more compressible data structures. *Thus any game that takes more than 2s to load has some innate inefficiencies of it's own* E.g. doesn't compress game data, compiles shaders or prerenders content synchronous with loading, accessed network synchronously, doesn't schedule asynchronously loading of different data so as to saturate bandwidth, or loads and then throws away a lot of data. For any game, you're only testing that ~2 seconds of actual SSD I/O. At this stage is only R&C and SpiderMan than are actually optimised for loading (and Insomniac say they can still do more!). For all other games you're testing ~2s of loading plus the fixed chunk of loading/prep inefficiency the game has. Put it another way, the real difference between a 4GB/s and 8GB/s drive loading a game is no more 2 seconds. That is all you are actually testing, regardless of a game's total load time. Large SSD speed difference makes little to no difference difference, *except* to highly optimised games.
The 520 is slower, what video are you seeing? Check your Doctor ASAP. With that said the 520 is actually faster than Ps5 SSD according to the initial test by about 100 mb/s.
Not for me , that was more slower than i though for a SSD M2 gen 3 , even with this i realize than this firecuda 520 he s almost go out for the PS5 read speed , PS5 at least can read it for a little bit, with 5600 almost 5700 of GB/S and with that way for move games is like we are go back to the PS4 AND PS3 times when put a game in a save storage and wait more than 10 minutes for that for play, sorry but this youtuber has right , this SSD M2 GEN 3 CARDS are not a very good option for PS5 , seriously sony was not lying about put only SSD M2 GEN 4 ON PS5, for your opinion are impresive but for me are not a good option and with this video is proof of that

Digital foundry did a video that showed it's nothing special so so all that hype about the fastest load times was bull. That's why Ii wasn't enabled into beginning, everyone would have installed a normal SSD and showed Sony with full of S
The funny thing is, the SSD alone isn't special, it's the overall I/O and Kraken that is the most important thing, everybody is getting to hung up on the SSD but try gaming with PCIe 4.0 SSDs on PC without DirectStorage (or RTX I/O for Nvidia users) and you'll see the SSD alone isn't special

Sound like you live on a boat. Put on a sailor outfit and you could be Captain Birds Eye :) Game loading is not sequential. The Firecuda 520 is definitely slower than the internal ssd for random reads so it is not suitable or recommended to be used.
Did anyone else remove the sticker on the wd ssd like I did? I saw a RUclips video and the guy recommended doing it so when I installed mine I removed the sticker on the ssd before putting the heatsink on.
That voids the warranty, and isn’t needed since the sticker acts as a heat spreader. That said, I don’t think doing so will harm your SSD, and WD is a brand and you likely won’t have to worry about it breaking.

Yeah... weird games choose to test SSD.

In fact, I believe that the Seagulls outside, are playing with their new toy:
Your favorite screwdriver!
Absolute wind up merchant!
@@SerenoOunce Applications loading IS effected by storage speed.
The more I look at your videos, the more I get the slight inclination that you are opposed to seagulls.
The seagulls are just furiously fighting over which SSD they think is best for the PS5 😂

I am just hoping the update goes live soon... Haven't got a beta key 😢

Considering games depend on random reads and writes, and not seq, a gen 3 would honestly work just fine if they enabled it.
I agree. I have a 2TB, 3rd gen, 3800, not using
That's what I'm thinking. It would be aight if they warned you about it but not giving the option at all sucks
can you test the pny xlr8 cs3140 ssd card, that's the card im currently using in the beta program, would like your thoughts on the card and performance. its equal to the firecuda, but i didn't go with the pny heat sink due to the size issue. so i got one from amazon, has been holding up very well. still getting the incredible fast load times on games.

5:57 alright Rolf, what is this British paints? 😄👴🏻💀
It seems all gen 4 drives ‘work’
in my opinion the full performance of those speeds are not being utilized. But pc will also hold back ps5 ssd because horizon forbidden west was sean on nvidia data base and since nvme is so expensive it means most pc user still use pcie nvme 3.0 drives. What you guys think?
You should test using ratchet and clank, since streaming is tied to perfomance in that game.
This. People using the world switching crystal in R&C, since Insomniac have said each hit of the crystal replaces all of RAM with the other world.

the performace will be better when you have a heatsink on it
Really wanna know does Samsung pm9a1 work fine on ps5, which is the oem version of Samsung 980pro. :)
I updated the firmware on my 980 pro before. Hopefully be ok in the new ps5 update.
There are some gen 4 ssds that are less than 5,000 MBs. This gen 4 you are using in the video is at the minimum recommended specs of 5,000 MBs.
The minimum recommended specs are 5,500 MBs
And it benched at above 5500. The concole maybe only checks for that minimum. Some SSDs might not work if you lose the lottery.
Should have tested ratchet and clank and demon's souls, as those games were made with fast storage in mind.

Do a review of the PNY CS140 SSD or you’ll never see your precious screwdriver again
I have a question... do you have to keep metal plate on? Because my thinking is that keeping it off would allow more heat to escape.
I'm no expert but i think the heat might damage the plastic plate so it has to be covered
Did you drop from 49k to 46k subscribers?
Hope not, but remaking the same video 8 times might annoy a few subscribers.
How important is that metal cover. Seems like it is not necessary?
The Sony engineer has said that the cover helps in keeping the ssd bay pressure suitable for air flow… how it compares to situation when you just have much, much better and bigger heatsink instead… i don`t know
Does anyone know if the Samsung PM9A1 will work? It's an OEM version of the 980 Pro so I guess it should work, and it's by far the cheapest one I could find.
Lol them dam birds… 😆
Slower NVME SSD should just be limited to PS4 games - the majority of people have far more PS4 games than they do PS5. Pretty much should be treated the same as external storage.
I just pray to God that a Seagull hasn't stolen this guys screwdriver :D :D :D

Does the msi m470 2tb version does it work on the ps5?
Games running ps4 code in back compat are irrelevant... the whole point of the specs is to have ps5 native games run properly, but there aren't many of those.
I’m gonna buy the drive and use it in my ps5
LOL Why do yall think your PS5 is going to explode if you use an under par SSD? Also, you know damn well there will be a bunch of folks using cheap SSDs even though they have a backlog of 500 games they've spent thousands on.
Where is the gen 3 test?
Will an 8tb inland m2 gen 3 ssd work on ps5?
Why literally nobody does the test with Ratchet and Clank with these subpar SSDs if that is the game that is literally built over the NVME architecture?!?!?!?! 😵💫 SMH
Will samsung 970 pro work?
What button is the psn button exactly?
You opted to live near the coast, so seagulls are inevitable, haha.
I love seagulls, I find them majestic and quite large birds.
And very smart. And thieves, if they notice you are walking around with your fish and chips, they will attempt to grab it from you.
I still like them. They are quite cunning birds.
Back to business;
I believe you made a major err in this case?
You played games on the "sub-par" Seagate FireCude 520M.2 SSD WITHOUT any heat sinks?
That skews the results too, would it not? (when you started showing us some games)
But I'm more furiated about the fact that Sony, unlike, let's say for example, QNAP, do not list what M.2 Sony has validated.
QNAP puts in a lot of efforts into their Compatibility Lists, I can't understand why Sony can't think of their customers and do something similar.
But I do not want to bicker, I won't be getting a PS5 any time soon.
the only benchmark game for ps5 ssd is rachet&clank

Great video. Be carefull though. Scalpers aka Seagulls are flying over your PS5.
😴😴
will a gen 3x4 work its a silicon power one
No it's need to be a Gen 4
I haven't really been interested in this, ever since the article came out that drives with below the recommended speed still function quite well
The real test would be ratchet and clank
After seeing this I’m wondering if the ps5 internal is under spec. Is it truly 5500. Hmmm. The 520 sure looks quicker to me.

Dude ratchet clank is ultimatw ssd test
Ratchet and clank doesn’t even max out the ps5 SSD yet insomniac developers said they haven’t even scratched the surface of its capabilities yet pretty impressive considering how fast ratchet and clank plays
So Sony's only advantage the superfast SSD Faster than everybody else's SSD isn't faster.
So it shows how poor the Xbox ssd is then..
@@oilerguy5494 Ya its rocking a little slower gen, but as a whole, i think Xbox is better.

@@kcamfork okay cool thanks and I kept the sticker so if I needed to use the warranty I'll just stick it back on
anyone that uses a drive with a lower than reccommended speed is making a mistake . will it work isn't an issue -it'll work, but when you're playing a game off that ssd, don't be surprised when you have game-crashing issues; because, that's what will happen.
