As an "A - Type" New Yorker who is now battling cancer, one of my goals is to come out of the other side of things kinder, gentler and more compassionate- much less of an "ego driven jerk"...To recover as someone who loves myself better and is therefore better able to love and support others. Thanks for this Ted Talk, Dan Harris.

Hi Dan, That was a really great TED talk. I applaud you for being so transparent. I have been a meditator for a number of years, and it has changed my life. I find myself to be a kinder, more compassionate person due to a Loving Kindness practice. Of course, I still screw up, but I move on and begin again. I'm also a fan of 10% Happier so keep on trucking and doing what you"re doing.
My biggest goal is to do a long, silent retreat sometime in the near future! Thank you for this TED talk!

The way he taught us to meditate is a basic meditation type in Buddhism... We learnt that when we are 5,6 years old, coz I'm a buddhist by birth... Eventhough I didn't use it much in my life.. Now I see the whole meaning of it.. I'm grateful to be born as a buddhist to learn them from early ages.

'Self love, properly understood, as having your own back, is not selfish'
This is beautiful. Others often asked how I could still be nice even with rude people, and since I can't properly express it I just said 'because I can afford to do it'. And that's why I can afford it: because I have my own back by hugging my own demon, so I could do it to other's demon as well. Brilliant TED talk 👍

Over the past couple of years, Dan Harris has been one of my most positive influences. I started using his Ten Percent Happier app after reading his book of the same title. Some people mastered sourdough bread making: I meditated, listened to podcasts, and applied mindfulness whenever possible. I’ve meditated daily for over two years now, without fail, and it’s the good habit that I acquired that helped me through the pandemic with most of my sanity intact. Glad you’re not a jerk any more, Dan, and thanks for sharing.

I have to say that I'm very happy that Mr. Harris has continued on his journey and is sharing it. Years ago I was skeptical and ignored him but hearing this talk makes me feel he is the type of person/people we need to be the new gurus in the 21st. century. Relatable people in and somewhat 'of' the world, for that is where life happens. I agree, love is the only thing that can save the world. Reason without love/compassion is dry and can become cruel and inhuman. Good on you Mr. Harris.

This was a delightful talk. I think while we are taught to be kind to others which is extremely important, we're not taught to be kind to ourselves with the same vigour and passion. Most of us never learn to love ourselves and we're overly critical and outright mean in our self assessments. It's even more true for children who're raised in unhealthy, chaotic and abusive homes. The positivity to be derived from this is that it's always possible to start on your journey of self kindness and to extend the same kindness to others as well.

Doing this 8 min into the talk I almost immediately cried. Alone fighting your own battles doesn't mean alone if you got your own back and are "active in your own rescue." I have been shielded from learning all this sort of stuff and became a horribly self hating person while loving and gentle and understanding BOTH since my youth. Since leaving all my family and friends I am on a solo journey to find everything useful to a happy life. Medicinal herbs for proper self care in the kitchen (ginger for nausea). Repeating the same goals and I am statements at bed time and when I wake up. Ice cold baths. Anything that is useful. Philosophy, Buddhist, and well being positive quotes from notible wise people. Anything and everything. This talk adds to that very well. "Worry not for tomorrow. You will face it with the same tools you have that arm you against today." I hope to eradicate the self hatred in me. I'm hard on myself but like he said... it can be a positive driving inner life coach rather than a spiraling negative flogging.

My inner critic is indeed an AH, and I definitely need to give myself a break. I can see how doing that can also lead to being less critical of others, which I'm expert at. I had been saying to myself “I see my ego” (meaning all destructive feelings and thoughts, fears), not imagining it (that’s important). And it had gone away) of course it’s comes back sometimes. It’s our mind. But when you see it, it goes away. It really helps with relationships and with all your life))

We have to love and appreciate ourselves because if we don't then other people won't do that. It's also utterly significant to value your own efforts. Sometimes, I tend to condemn myself for not studying so badly or underrate my knowledge. Then I realize I am being a jerk to myself. In such cases, I tell myself there is no need to be so strict with your own self. You have not done something today, you will do it tomorrow. Live and soak up your life. Life is not all about studying. You won't miss anything out if you don't study for one day. Those words help me to calm down and not to get myself down.

I recently started a practice of “noticing”. I set a monastery bell timer to go off every 15 minutes. (I think it’s a plum village app).
I stop, inhale and exhale once. Then ask myself “who’s here right now”? Then answer myself: “[angry, depressed, responsible, thinking] Carlos is here”.
Then, if “angry me” is here. I respond with: “that’s ok, let him talk. Nobody heard him when he was a small boy and hurting”.
It’s amazing this “noticing practice has improved my productivity, decreased my debilitating depression, and anxiety.

For all of you who loved the video and what Dan had to offer, you should probably read the Bible. Oh, and before assuming I'm selfish to compare pragmatic experience with Christianity, I'm here to say that the things God and the Bible say about these themes are so profound and life-changing that you should give it a try. And hey, don't think I'm trying to impose anything here; just read it as you would read a book from Dan and find yourself amazed by the beauty of the Book. Matthew 7:7-8 says, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." With this, I say, if you ask questions, they will be answered, regardless of the time between your question and the answer. God bless you all!

Love is a skill that you can train by high-fiving your inner demons.
Envisioning a really easy person. (Good friend or pet)
say "May you be happy, may you be safe, may you be healthy, may you live with ease."
    Envisioning myself.
say "May you be happy, may you be safe, may you be healthy, may you live with ease."
Envisioning your mentor (someone who has helped you).
say "May you be happy, may you be safe, may you be healthy, may you live with ease."
Envisioning a neutral person (somebody you might overlook).
say "May you be happy, may you be safe, may you be healthy, may you live with ease."
    Envisioning a difficult person.
say "May you be happy, may you be safe, may you be healthy, may you live with ease."
    Envisioning all beings everywhere.
say "May you be happy, may you be safe, may you be healthy, may you live with ease."

I heard that the British Prime Minister Goolge CEO came from the background of living in India with a daily living cost of less than two dollars... so knowledge surfers who have experienced living costs of less than two dollars have a chance for everyone but I I also read Tell the story of an American who crossed from the east coast of the United States to the devil's horn in the west without taking a dime...

this is what men need. A guy who validates the difficulty men have with being emotional while still encouraging us to give it a try
