      Hi Dougie, with all the BS I have read about cam wear (Just bought a 1982 VF Magna with 65,000 miles) ,do you add zinc to your oil, or was the cam worry more for the non chain cam jobs...??? I dont know the bikes history, but can see it has been opened up at some stage , will be using 20 W 50 mineral oil with full zinc , any other tips...??? Im from OZ BTW, nice and warm here ... ;-)

      @@vik351 I can only tell you what I did... And I'm sure that as many riders that are out there or ever have been... There are that many rituals to take care of a motorcycle... Mine was to never skimp on the oil (price that is) you will only get what you pay for, and for me that was"mobile 1- 20/w50 full synthetic"and a fram oil filter (again don't skimp on the filter). But my secret ingredient was... And this might raise an eyebrow... Bardahl no smoke oil treatment. And not because it was puffing oil although it was 13 years old when I got it ('83 VT750C). I did that to keep up the oil viscosity knowing when it got hot the oil would thin out, and no...the oil additive did not affect my clutch plates or friction plates or the clutch to where it was constantly slipping. I never experienced any problems like that whatsoever. I live in the northwestern Ohio area. We have cold early springs, and cool early falls. The heavier oil mixture never gave me a problem in cranking it over and starting. I will say the v65 (1100cc) magna was said to have had low oil pressure problems in the rear or vertical cylinder head. To which there were aftermarket oiler kits ,it seemed to have solved that problem. Good luck. It's good to hear that people are still trying to keep those old bikes on the road. Later

    My old sporty did that same thing, was just corroded ground terminal on the battery. I don't know if that's specifically a battery thing for you, but it's almost definitely a grounding thing. Not a whole lot of grounds to check on a bike like that though. Short ramble: not a whole lot of points of failure on these old bikes, one of the great things about them. In my humble opinion, the 80's and 90's were the peak of motorcycle design. You get the benefit of some of the more modern engineering with the benefit of the old school simplicity. Can always beef up the brakes, suspension etc to keep up with the times if need be. Ain't gonna lie tho, that's a nice Heritage that fella's got haha: end ramble
    Been thinking about picking up an old v45 myself. Such cool bikes.

    • @jamesrevels
      @jamesrevels  3 года назад +1

      The issue seemed to be loose cables. I tightened the bolts just a touch on the battery terminals and didn’t have an issue out of it after that. They are definitely amazing bikes and honestly undervalued, you can find them for really good deals all day long. The heritage is a 2020 model, I’ve rode it once and it’s definitely a different experience with all the modern features.

    Sorry about rambling on in the comments section... but having ridden metric bikes for some 40 years now I'd like to pass on little tidbits that I have found out... About using the kill switch the shut your bike off... Using the key to kill the engine guarantees you'll never accidentally leave the ignition on after using the kill switch to shut the engine off... my first two metric bikes we're small 350s and they had kick-starts so if the battery is going dead or the starter refused to function, I knew I could still get down the road. for whatever reason manufacturers stop putting kick-starts on their bikes so you're totally dependent on the starter system to function. it's likely your Magna uses was called a starter clutch. These are susceptible 2 failing if you weigh on the starter button for more than 5 to 7 Seconds at a time, and they're not the easiest to access and repair. I would also advise the steer away from lead acid batteries. AGM or applied glass mat batteries have no liquid acid in them, and are far less likely to calcify and swell and fail to hold a charge, yes they are slightly more expensive but I view that as nothing more than insurance that my ride will start when I need it to. Head on a swivel and cover your brake. be waiting for your next vid. Later

    • @jamesrevels
      @jamesrevels  3 года назад +2

      You are fine with the comments, it actually helps the channel by you interacting with the videos. I’ll try to use the key from now on rather than the kill switch, I have accidentally left the key in the ignition so that would be a positive by using the key. Yes, the battery I use is an AGM, I got a good deal on it because I know the commercial manager where I bought it really well. I appreciate all the compliments and I’m always open to learn new information.

    6:45 when going over RIlroad Tracks you should NEVER...EVER....CONTINUE TO GAS IT when traversing the tracks!...se goes for BRAKING... NEVER...EVER apply brakes when traversing the tracks... It is downright dangerous!!! I cannot stress this enough! gas it write up until the railroad tracks... And then either pull in the clutch or maintain throttle, but avoid APPLYING throttle or either engine braking OR actual braking. this is because the railroad tracks themselves are extremely slippery even when dry but especially when wet, which did not apply here obviously. Also, by gliding over the tracks so to speak it releases any load up on the suspension, making the bike "float" over the tracks. This principal should also be Incorporated in an automobile. incorporating this tip into your writing style can literally save your ass!

    Hello never here. Haven't road for 20Y I've only had 2 bikes and ridin 4. I'll never 4get dad had a yamaha 1100. I was 18 me and my cuz took it and OMG I couldn't believe the power. Dad found me and let me have it, no ins, no tages, no license, no helmet, and on empty ROFL Dad was pissed
    But I've been looking at those Magna's.
    The prices seem almost to good to be true, to me that is.
    Love the rides more so the race with the Harley lol
    Take care and GOD Bless keep it out the ditches 😂😇

    I currently own 40+ bikes which 3 of them are Honda V4 bikes, 1986 VF500, 1999 Magna V45 and 1999 VFR800, once you own the Honda V4 bike, you will never want to sell them, go ride one and you know what I mean.
