Well known Topsham builder Claude Belanger is also an archeologist, and an expert on the Maya civilisation in Belize. In 2005 he took me to visit Barranco village on the border with Guatemala to meet one of Belize's interesting minorities - the Garifuna people who are struggling to preserve their culture. I saw some familiar problems - definitely worth a slot on Topsham TV.

Hello , Garifuna my name is Kwabena am of Ghanaian Senegalese and Lesotho heritage I was told some of my ancestors are also from Belize who are Garifuna am learning more about the Garifuna right now am trying to get a Belize Citizenship as well . But I was born in the USA to African parents .

Hmmm...makes you wonder if there was a remnant of African culture already here in this part of the world. I say this, because I read something stating that these are a mixed race people. However, watching this video, I’m not really seeing any other culture(s). If the African was brought to this part of the world as slaves, then why would the people that were already here give up their culture to a Maroon, a runaway, a supposed slave? I believe black(non-African) people were already here. I think sometimes we forget that once you pass the equator, that’s all you’re dealing with is dark-skinned peoples of different shades. Go look up the picture of the first king of Hawaii as well as the the second president of Mexico. I dare you.

There has been prdjudice against the garifuna by Creols. But that didn't stop them from loving Punta Rock.
Garifunas know there African culture and are proud of there ancestry. Creoles are similar to African Americans as far as their disconnect and lost culture and recognition of their African ancestry as well. They are usually mixed race blacks ( such as myself), who have acclamated to a culture that genetically they are not natives and have historically disassociated themselves to Garifunas and some feel they are better than.
None. We do have or speak creole in Belize. We think we do, but we speak a broken english.
