Thank you for sharing their story. I live amongst them and they are amazing people... very loving, happy, and welcoming. Their men LOVE women and are very passionate.🤣. And it's a safe community to live in. They Treat me as family. I love it because it's affordable living in a beautiful setting and they look like me so I blend in well. I love the fresh food, the abundance of fruit and the scenery in their villages. I have a little apartment and I've spent of my last few years amongst them. We are known as the back to nature group. It's just heaven on earth.

Wow Sly Thank you so much for this making this video about the Garifuna Cultural Center, I was so caught up that day enjoying speaking with you and the rest of the guests, I forgot you were filming. My sister Nora (the woman in the yellow t-shirt sharing facts) and I started this project in 2016, just five years after we moved from New York to Roatan. I just cried after watching this video because we are finally in alignment with the mission that God and our ancestors have for us. Seremein numada (thank you friend in Garifuna)

Especially with her selection of words such as being exiled, as opposed to being escaped slaves as some would tell it. There is a big difference.

I just had a conversation with my mom just yesterday about the Garifuna people. Her maiden name is Gary, and I’m 99% sure that these people are my people. We are Mississippian, not African tho. Parts of my family are the Natchez, and they fought the colonizers in 1730, and many people were sent down the great Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico (along the coastline, check the maps and currents 🧐) to all the areas she mentioned, including Haiti 🇭🇹 , resulting in the Great Rebellion in the 1790s.

Garífuna are from the island of Saint Vincent. They are mix of africans, via slaves, and Caribbean natives (Arawak/Caribs). The English separated the black Caribs (garífuna) from the yellow Caribs (natives) and exiled the garífunas to the Central American coasts.

@@levelingup5d603 The masquerades in the video look & dance exactly like Nigerian masquerades you’d find at a festival in Southeastern Nigeria (Efik, Ibibio, Igbo & Ijaw tribes). The cuisine is also similar (cassava, plantains, rice, stews, soups, proteins, vegetables, fritters, etc.) The garifunas in the video look like me and I'm 100% Igbo-Nigerian. The West African influence is undeniable to me as a Nigerian who just stumbled on this video.
