senseFly presents: Mapping the Impossible

- A video crew follows senseFly's team of engineers as they mark a historic surveying milestone by using eBee mapping drones to photograph the epic Matterhorn, before generating an astounding 3D model of "the most beautiful mountain". More on senseFly drones: www.sensefly.com/
The mission involved the coordination of several teams with multiple eBee UAVs taking over 2,200 images in 11 flights, all within a few hours on a sunny alpine morning. The results? A stunning high-definition 3D point-cloud comprised of 300 million points, covering an area of over 2,800 hectares and with an average resolution of 20 cm.

This is inspiring. At a resolution of 20cm I wonder if this could be one of the most detailed 3D models of the Matterhorn in existence.

How do they tell you where to look for gold thow. Great for spotting tailings or old mine shafts

Question? Why did you have to hike up the mountain? couldn't you just release it from the bottom? i'm guessing you'd use more battery trying to fly all the way up. more flights would have been required?

Awesome work! But what I do not understand is why you needed to climb up the Matterhorn. Would it have been possible to launch your aircraft from the valley?

Впечатляющий результат. Было бы интересно использовать эту технологию для cервисов типа Google Earth и Google Streets. Только вот объекты должны быть статичными, чтобы их можно было отсканировать с нескольких ракурсов. Технология дает новые возможности для кино, игр, обучающих программ: модели не придется рисовать с нуля, и выглядят они при этом очень достоверно.

Whats the point of using the eBee if you need to climb the mountain?! Other UAVs can be sent from kilometers away
Mauricio Ortiz Buitrago Hey Mauricio. So, eBees mapped the east and north faces of the mountain after launching from the hut located on the north-east ridge, climbing up to 5000 m above sea level in the process. The Matterhorn's west face, however, is extremely difficult to reach and, most importantly, it can't be seen from the village or the huts in the area. Therefore the only way to safely map this face while keeping the drone within line of sight - a legal requirement here in Switzerland - and thus ensure the operation's safety, was to map it from the summit. (This was also, of course, a great excuse for our team to climb it!)
lol staying in line of sight on a abandoned mountain. So nobody would call the police right?

The line of sight thing is not only for safety but also because a drone pilot should always be identified/located. Both aspects doesn't apply on this mountain anyway.
Nobody will feel a break in privacy and nobody can get hurt.
But whatever. :-)

Camera moving around the 3D model seems like a bad way to show off your high resolution. What you have now does not seem to be any more detalized than, say, Skyrim. Static camera with moving light source would be much better.

Ebee costs 17000 €, right?
I don't think the drones are powerful enough for sustained climbing, they're more like gliders with a propeller to help them stay in the air a bit longer.

В городских условиях эта хрень не взлетит. Увы Это не квадрокоптер. Ещё, или вам понятно и достаточно? Я не хочу их обламывать, может они денег хотят на этом заработать , может они старались писали программное обеспечение . во всяком случае надеюсь они хорошо отдохнули в горах.Наука - это удовлетворение своих потребностей в любопытстве за чужой счет.

The engine looks no powerful enough
O God, why, I'm Russian, should explain such things) this crap can't fly, she engine is not enough powerful, and what is on the engine pulls. I'm a programmer, and know that anybody can write, but that the mechanics will fly. With the same success can be put from the mountain boomerang or small model of airplane. No photo from this airplane, no video with this airplane. only from the earth.
