Carrauntoohil: Ireland's Highest Mountain (With Frances, Who's Never Climbed A Mountain)

- Today I'm challenging Frances to conquer her first mountain, the mighty Carrauntoohil. And we've lucked out: a stunning weather inversion means we're high above the clouds, and the views are nothing short of magical...
Not the guy to write comments on RUclips. Seriously, actually this could be my first one.
Tim, the views, the music you have chosen, this is brilliance. Thank you.
I’ve only just found your channel this week and I can’t believe you have less than a thousand subscribers. Well, you have one more now. Someday I’ll be bragging about being one of the first subscribers.
Then welcome on board mlh43 and cheers for subscribing - we've just gone past the one thousand mark this evening thanks to you!
@@TheTimTraveller Almost 17 thousand new subscribers in just two weeks? Holy moly, I'm one of them though! Congratulations, and keep on going!
18 thousand today and rising fast--not bad for two weeks!
So you are the one who suddenly put TTT in the favour of the algorithem
@@davehodges2361 And at time of writing (12:18am 16/10/19), just shy of 30K now, making it 11,000+ new subscribers in the last /day/. For once the RUclips algorithm gets something right!
Frances was a good sport. The pink sheep were good sports too.
I just found your channel today and I’ve been binge watching… I love this old video from 2019 with no narration… but I like your newer ones with narration, too… you’re funny and informative 🎉
Love the use of Cherry Ghost as a backing track!
We apologise for the fault in the subtitles. Those responsible have been sacked.

(Very nice one, really enjoyed it!)
Ha - yes, when I sent the video to Frances for her approval, she told me the subtitles weren't quite 100% accurate. I didn't even notice tbh
A møøse once bit my sister...
@@betterspud21 Mind you, moose bites can be pretty nasty...
@@TheTimTraveller TBF, the English "Yes, I cannot wait to climb more mountains" does sound much like "A-ha ha, not in this lifetime" in Middle Gaelic.
nice one centurian;
SHADDUP !!!!
This channel is amazing. I'm going through all of the videos all the while learning about new places and laughing like a little kid.
I really didn’t knew that Ireland had such mountains.
Amazing
Frances seems like a nice young woman. Thank you for sharing your day with us.
You're not wrong, that view from the top is really something!
I've never been to Ireland, but this has a very large reminiscence with the highlands in Scotland for me.
As someone who has spent their life in the great outdoors it honestly took me a minute to process that title. Well done Frances. Welcome to a whole new world.
A surprising number of people at the top. Good hat work. Excellent sheep. Good views. Top video
A few considerations.
1) Well done on making it to the top.
2) Make more videos. (Please).
3) We are looking forward to your 1089th subscriber special.
4) .....ok I did have a 4th point and it was epic and witty. But I've forgotten. So I'll return later.
Whitewick's Abandoned Railways you lied. You never came back.
come back
Come back, man!
@@wpynaemnasuchegoprzestworo8336 nope.... Still can't remember. Back soon.
@@pwhitewick How about now? Remember?
Thanks for taking the time to share your worldly experience which BTW is made all the better by your wonderfully dry sense of humor. I love your videos...
A great video as always Tim, hope you enjoyed your hike.
Also - I've recently had an amazing trip to the Tatras mountains in Slovakia, easily accessed from the nearest city (Poprad) by the impressive Tatras Electric railway, like some built a tram between some tiny mountain villages with lots of great hiking - and the adventure walking in the near by Slovak National Park was amazing as well. Just thought with your mountain + trains videos might be the sort of place you'd fancy a trip and somewhere I never knew about till a friend told me about it.
Nice one Alex, cheers for the recommendation! I've done a bit of hiking on the Polish side of the Tatras and would love to go back so that sounds good - and if there just happens to be an interesting railway there too, then that's always a bonus :)
I’ve been there, with a contingent of fellow exchange students, clutching the chain-link handrail as a brief thunderstorm blew through. If that wasn’t existentially thrilling enough; As we reached the pass, the weather and fog suddenly lifted away, and revealed the most tranquil, fresh mountain valley/gorge I could ever imagine. Unforgettable.
@@TheTimTraveller the railway on the Zakopane side is fairly interesting too, it had it's own special engines in the 30s to cope with the frequent reversals, one of which is preserved at Chabówka, and occasionally still runs on it's original route.
Seeing these hills and these trails is good for my soul.
I didn't realize that Ireland had this kind of wilderness.
Richard lightburn We have a lot of that particularly on the west coast.Ireland is actually very sparsely populated especially in the west.
I'm from Killarney, Co. Kerry. I've watched your vids for a year or so and I never knew you were this close to where I am from. Would you believe, I haven't climb that mountain, yet.
Tim Great video really enjoyed it, never visited lreland before its only a short trip for me from Holyhead going to do this walk for sure soon as the sun is here . thank you!
Cheers Steve! Yeah do it if you can, it's well worth the trip :)
Bonus points for Cherry Ghost! Adore that band
Pretty spectacular view.
The backpack i mean ofcourse.
This looks like something out of Howl’s Moving Castle, especially where you get above the clouds. So beautiful!
Yes, it does look quite a lot like a steam powered walking castle heated by a fire demon. A LOT like it.
Tim, I have to say, your channel is providing me with the best moments and laughs constantly! Especially during COVID-19 it is refreshing to witness your beautiful work :) Thank you very much from a German fan!
Ah cheers Matthew!
Just can't wait for your Olympus Mons video!
That would be a new experience for Tim. He hasn't covered anything bigger than France before.
I always thought Olympus Mons was awesome, but when I learned its base could cover France, I just... I have no words!
Looks like a **stunning** part of an already-beautiful country! I'd love to see if it's possible to get to the source of that stream too!
This is an awesome RUclips channel and exactly what this platform is all about. Keep up the awesome work.
“Not bad”
Not bad? ……
Not. bad.
You’ve flipping converted me and I’ve only been able to watch the video/s!!!
and the view, I have no words (well, I have 3 words) -
Simply breathtaking Tim.
Thanks so (so) much for sharing this video with me, amazing🙂🐿
This channel is delightful.
I demand a prequel where you climb Carraunonehil.
I feel the pink sheep are giving Frances' backpack a run for its money!
(And Frances *is* quite the star!)
7+ thousand subscribers, up from 6.1 earlier today. Excellent job with this and all other videos I have watched.
3 days later, and over 20.000. This is ridiculous. :D
Great video, I was there recently myself! And we were lucky to have a good day. You have a new subscriber!
Great video Tim. You have to try Mount Brandon next time, beautiful hike with views out to the ocean . The highest peak on the next peninsula, Dingle.
Thank you for acknowledging the very nice Lowe Alpine backpack :)
It looks like São Miguel nos Açores or the Azores islands. Cheers from Portugal and congratulations for your presentation. Thanks it's very beautiful
My Bluetooth headset beeped an flat-battery warning just when Frances saw the rock ladder, and I giggled, thinking that you had censored her _real_ comments.
It wasn't until they continued that I realised that I was wrong.
Carry on, Frances; you're a natural.
Great job she and her backpack managed to get to the top of the mountain.
I did almost the same on the Croagh Patrick, everybody walked the mountain as light as possible, but not me. With a little break in the middle I was on the top eventually. The view was not there because of the clouds.
Awesome video! Been only to the flat parts of Ireland! Now I know where to go next. Thanks so much for the info!!
Yes - head to County Kerry in the southwest, it's beautiful! Alternatively, there are more mountains just south of Dublin, which might be easier to get to...
Nub zur The west of ireland is also good for mountains particularly connemara/south mayo ,north sligo leitrim and Donegal
Tim, May your greatest challenges still await you.
This makes me happy. Thank you And Francis with her backpack.
Devil's ladder is well named, think I prefer the 5-minute video tour instead of actually slogging up there. And thanks! for educating me about the name and location of Ireland's highest crag (in the southwest corner of the emerald isle).
And the biggest question is: Why on earth does she need such a huge backpack for a single day trip and what is inside?
Everything and anything
Lunch?
You know, they could get hit by a blizzard and be stranded for days without help. That's why you pack an extra pair of underwear with you.
An iron lung?
@@colinmacdonald1869 Or oxygen bottle, It IS the highest peak of Ireland. Altitude sickness is a serious thing, better safe than sorry I guess.
Wow, great climbing and views! Thank you for sharing, I didn't know about Carrauntoohil, and RUclips just offered this video today.
If I really will do my travel to know Ireland this year, perhaps I'll put this mountain on my to-do list. Last year I climbed around 400m high on some trails in southern Brazil, maybe I can survive this Ireland natural challenge. 😬🙂
The music is absolutely amazing, thanks!
I always wondered where pink wool came from and now I know, pink Irish sheep of course! The biggest hill within 100 miles of my home is a hundred feet high, that's about 160km and 30 meters for you. I can see why people like being near hills, it's like the fact I love living near water. Except I don't get exhausted walking to the beach, it's only 30 feet away! (or 10 meters)
Good thing about Ireland is most of the mountains are near the coast. Best of both worlds. I can walk out my front door and be on the beach in ten minutes and out the back door and on top of a mountain in 40 minutes. On foot.
@@Dreyno We have a nice country I reckon, the British would agree they have been trying to steal it for centuries.
@@thenextshenanigantownandth4393 no blame on the Norse, the vikings and the Normans then? I think it's time you let it go.
@@TheCardiganR Let go of what? The limey red coats are still trying to steal our beautiful country and are occupying the north.
@@thenextshenanigantownandth4393 Limeys? Let me guess, you're an American who thinks you're Irish because of your surname, you've never set foot in Ireland and you think the British 'Redcoats' are out to take over the auld emerald isle. Get real. The north is still a part of the UK, although that may change in the future, so we are not occupying it at all, unlike you yanks occupying Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam etc etc.
This mountain is only 1038 metres above sea level but it looks like 2500 :P Beautifull mountain!
The further up north u are the sooner the alpine zone begins as per usual ^^,
Honestly, this is such a lovely video- great music choice
My home county of Kerry. You should also check out the view on a fine day from the walkway beside the canal in Tralee looking out past the windmill in Blennerville to the Slieve Mish mountains on the Dingle peninsula.
🖐️♥️🕊️🗺️💪 beautifull you did it .
I climbed Snowdon in Wales back in 1999. This video brings back happy memories of that climb. There were far more people on Snowdon than on Carrauntoohil!
Johnny No train up to carrauntoohil nor is it possible,if you want to go on top you walk
Looks just like the island they filmed the one star wars movie on... Amazing views
Skellig Michael and above are about 40km/25 miles apart in SW Ireland.
@@RadWagon and you don't get seasick coming to this one...
Looks like a lovely walk/hike/climb!
Love the colour contrast at 1:03
Thanks for that guide. I plan to scale the mountain, when I do the Wild Atlantic Way.
The taxi driver had a point. I once spent an August week in a cottage with "views" of this mountain and didn't see it at all because of the clouds.
00:49 The sheep with blue / white /red painting must be a donation from France, I guess.
Brillaint video! Lovely views!
Amazing Videos
Well, that was wonderful - truly exquisite views! I need to go up some hills / fells / mountains again...
Did Frances still talk to you after this trip? :)
I took my girlfriend for a 30 minute walk down to a lake near Rainbow Beach here in Aus. She got a leech on her leg, went ballistic, and We’ve never gone walking together again. Oh well.
LOL that's hilarious!!! I'd be calling her "leech girl" or "leechie" for short
Especially good opening credits.
I've never had the urge to go into the mountains but Damn this looks amazing
Franceshas a nice backpack. Is that why we see so much of it?
The Bar at the top is great crack .It's just around the corner from the cross .
You're a lucky lad to have a walking/climbing companion like Frances. As I tend to hike/walk in very quiet and lonely places - I find the crowd at the top disturbing. That's just me.
You should try Mt. Monadnock in NH. *Hundreds* of people at the top.
A place I shall visit once I get my license(I hate heights)
Great content!
It's lockdown (again) in France, and this video made me want climb a mountain :/
My mother's climbed this mountain twice including going down the devil's ladder.... & The second trip she broke her foot in a rabbit hole on the flat grass on the way back to the cars! XD
lovely video! For more stunning views I recommend Schafberg/Austria (incl steam cogwheel train!) or Rigi/Switzerland. Most memorable trip I’ve ever done though was a 2-day trip in Zell am See/Austria: up to Kapruner Törl via Mooserboden, stay on top overnight, then down via Tauernmoossee and Enzingerboden. Takes you past the glacier and the two highest mountains in Austria, Grosses Wiesbachhorn and Grossglockner. Then I recommend a (tandem-)paragliding flight in this area. I promise you’ll never forget this experience in your life!
Can you do this as a loop? And I assume you mean to start at Stausee Mooserboden? Finally, when you say stay at Kapruner Törl, is there a hut, os you camp out in the open?
@@StephenOKane it's a looong time ago, but I remember taking the funicular up to "Besucherzentrum Gletschermuseum" at Stausee Mooserboden and started the tour from there. I definitely did it as a loop because I didn't have a car and stayed somewhere in Niedernsill. Kapruner Toerl is a pass, you don't want to stay there ;). I hiked down to Hotel Rudolfshuette and stayed there over night before descending via Enzingerboden the next day. Hope that helps!
Another good one mate. Haleakala in Maui is a good one too if you like weather inversions.
Never climbed Carrauntoohil (was once on a bucket list). Done Ben Nevis and Snowdon, and numerous Lake District mountains, but failed Scafell Pike. Wish I was 20 years younger!
I'm 55 and I climbed the first mountain (Preikestolen, not even high) in my life in Norway last year. I felt 20 years older after that. So after a couple of days I felt 20 years younger again. ;)
More mountains and more Frances
Amaizing views and trail 🙂 I leave a sub. Cheers 👍
Frances makes any video better in my opinion.
Great vlog Tim
I was in the Pyrenees a couple of weeks back, that was magical. Particularly impressed by the vultures.
Never climbed a mountain over 1000m. Well, try 1038. Ah ha!
What beautiful views.
Edit : Subbed. :)
Absolutely adorable. You and Frances. She's a cutie. Hey, you going to do more videos with her? You might hit 100,000 subscribers!
Just hit 100,000 with his brilliant content alone!
Devils ladder is awesome, it's so vertical!
excellent, must get there when this PLAGUE thing has been solved
This is sick!
dang your channel blew up congrats m8
With that crowd at the top, probably all thirsty, I am surprised that there is no pub at the top. Are you sure you are in Ireland?
Ah yeah.. good memories on that mountain.. just as my group declined I became sick and had to violently unload myself- still worth it - Scotland's highest mountain on the other hand was a horrid experience ngl
C'mon Tim, where else have you taken Frances' backpack? We still have weeks to go.
you make fun stuff, did you visit the highest point in Belgium, there is a fun knowing about it whit a 4 meter stairs so it become 700m?
Yes Tim, let’s do it again. LOL.
A bit different than the other videos and still quite good.
Well, that's one way to meet women.
Ahhh ha ha ha ha ha, your wording on the subtitles when she gave that nervous "I'd kill you if there weren't so many witnesses" laugh.... Only sadness about the video was I didn't get to hear you pronounce that argleblargh of a name!
The highest point in The Netherlands (in Europe) : 322,4 meter. We call it Vaalseberg (Vaalse *Mountain).*
The highest point in Ireland : 1038 meter. They call it Carrantoohil (Carrantoo *hil),* :D
I live near the Havelterberg, which is 17 meter. :)
Keyboardje toohil Its originally irish gaelic and actually means tuathails sickle ,it does not mean corran two hills or any to do with hills
Went up there last summer. Only a 3 hour round trip. Fucking beautiful though.
Getting up into the mountains, away from all the crowds...
I'm so jealous. Frances reminds me of the kinds of girls I'd have crushes on back when I was a young man. I enjoyed watching this very much.
I haven't either. Highest I've been is Scafell Pike - all 978 metres of it, in a heatwave (summer of 1989), eating, if remember rightly, garlic sausage and egg mayonaise sandwiches. (not together, that would be disgusting - two garlic sausage sandwiches and two egg mayonaise sandwiches)
Ha that hill is as high in altitude as my hometown xD
I wonder whether is a Geocache on the top of that mountain.
That's a pretty area
