I remember climbing Slieve Donard on an Easter Monday in the late 80's. The weather in Newcastle was sunny and fairly warm for the time of year. On the top of Donard I found a large snow patch. I took off my boots and socks and plunged my hot tired feet into the snow. Bliss!
In 1976 I climbed Slieve Donard TWICE in one day. The second climb was with several friends to bring our stricken friend down from the summit on a stretcher. He was suffering from exposure, but since we actually dropped him 4 times on the way down (icy rocks underfoot) he was quite fortunate to at least go to hospital in one piece! Happy memories....

Great video, brings back a lot of memories, of riding my bike along the coast from Strangford to Newcastle. County Down is a great part of N.I. You really did have some unusually good weather! Just along the coast at Dundrum if you go up to the Castle the view looking down on Murlough bay is wonderful.
The scenery is really beautiful and the soundtrack was just great.

How much did you pay the crow for the cameo at the end?! I remember in the seventies, we lived in Germany, in Baden-Wuerttemberg, and we were touring the Swabian Alb, and as we came up to the famous castle Lichtenstein, a swarm of crows flew out of the forest and circled the castle, just like an illustration from a fairy tale book. Those were such wonderful experiences.

Colin Maxwell Yes. A raven. Shaggy and large. And you can see the individual wing feathers in flight like fingers. They like cliffs and high mountains.
Crows like to use the air streams, thermals and currents. In Edinburgh they circle around the Arthur's Seat, like eagles. Some people suggest that corvids do this for pleasure, like when humans are playing sports. Those are usually one year old birds that have left their parents nest and they go hanging about with other juveniles of the same age. Later they will come back to their parent to help raising another chicks before having their own once they find a match.
If you're ever back in the Mournes, I recommend climbing Binnian. A little shorter, but I'd argue the walk is more interesting and the views are even better! You get a lovely view of Ben Crom, of Silent Valley, and of Carlingford Lough into ROI. Also, so lovely to see Newcastle being appreciated!

If you fancy coming to Northern Ireland again there is a picturesque railway line between Derry/Londonderry and Coleraine and a narrow gauge railway from Bushmills to the Giant's Causeway that runs in the summer.

Belfast Cave Hill is obviously a lot lower, but take the 2J (Cavehill Road) or the 1 to Belfast Castle and walk up, you can see the whole of Belfast from McArts Ford. Great little walk if you are visiting Belfast. Bring some mud ready boots, as it can be soggy after a rainy day.

Done slieve donard last Sunday set off from the car park at 5am to catch the sunrise. Only got a glimpse though weather wasn’t too great. Walk back down the other way to bloody bridge was lovely though.

I run a walking group in NI and have been up Donard many times. While watching this I was thinking that’s Commedagh you are climbing, then you realised it was the wrong mountain and climbed Donard too lol. You can now say that you’ve climbed Northern Ireland’s 1st and 2nd highest peaks lol

I live just along the coast near Kilkeel....and yes, surprisingly we do get a lot of really good weather here. Not as grey and wet as a lot of people believe.

The Mourne Wall is a wall constructed to enclose a catchment area in the Mourne Mountains, Northern Ireland. It was built between 1904 and 1922 by the Belfast City and District Water Commissioners to enclose a reservoir. (Pulled that off wikipedia) - they basically didn't want cattle and sheep to go into the catchment area of the reservoir

Pro Gaming 808 similar things like that happens to me as well! When I was growing up you could get blown up just for going to work or out shopping. Was always discriminated against because I went to a Protestant school and they wanted 50 50 recruitment. Couldn’t walk down certain streets even though I and my family have always payed taxes !!!!

In 2013 i got half way up (just past the trees) but we had to quit, due to snow and ice in late april!

Yes agreed - Bernagh or Binion definitely give better views from the top than Donard. Fewer people up there too!

Most of the ones in the western Mournes offer breath taking views with minimal effort to climb them. Definitely my favourite area to hike

The Mournes are fairly dry underfoot, because they're mostly granite with decent drainage.
The history of the Mourne Wall would make a decent video for you, Tim. Some people walk the whole thing, as it's a loop.

The Mourne Wall keeps sheep (and therefore their poo) out of the catchment area of the reservoir.
What I want to known is why there's a wall running straight over the mountains and fields.
To keep sheep out of the valley (and hence to keep sheep poop out of the reservoir).
You don't half get around. Suggest you visit Lake Taymyr in Northern Siberia. Sorry, you probably have done that already.

Can’t spend all that time beside a wall that log and not mention it! For those of us across the pond, what’s with the wall?
Its the Mourne wall, its 22 miles long and up to 8ft tall, it crosses 14 mountains and took 18 years to construct from 1904. Its purpose was to mark the boundary of the water board and to keep sheep from polluting the reservoirs.

The wall was built to stop sheep and cattle getting into a reservoir which provides alot of the water for belfast city. Climbers have made a challenge called the mourners wall challenge which you walk all 22 miles of the wall in a day.
