  • Next up some other components, like the oil pump, camshaft, and timing chain, need to be installed! The new camshaft being installed is a Speed-Pro CS-1014R according to the spec sheet, as opposed to what the seller said it was (the info that was on-screen when it was first shown). Very similar very mild RV cam.
    .420 intake .442 exhaust lift, 278° intake 288° exhaust duration, 204 intake 214 exhaust duration @.050”.
    There are a lot of things covered in this video, including some that had to be taken out for time reasons, so there are a few parts out of order or that jump around a bit.

    A good tip for installing lip seals with springs, is the fill in the area where the spring goes with chassis grease, that can help to prevent it from jumping out.

    So you have more lift but less duration on your new camshaft.
    You plan on more torque on the low /middle rpm and less high rpm power ?
    How is this cam described ?

      Specs are in the video description. It's a low RPM cam, won't have much top-end.

    Oil pan modifications...
    I'm getting up there in years and rather aware of ritual vs. practical maintenance efforts. Within the last few years I've converted over from jack-up-the-vehicles type oil changes to vacuum extraction from the dip stick. Given the number of cars in the family I have to service, decreasing the effort is a big plus. And too, if one sticks to a sane oil change interval, oil filters don't need changing but ever 20k miles or more. Think about it... How often does one change their fuel filter? Every gas tank full? Hardly. Transmission oil filter? Certainly a lot more friction material in there...
    But, if you must stick with your every-time oil filter change ritual, okay by me, just don't go all zealot on others with different notions.
    Anywho, I ran into issues with the C1500 oil pan baffles causing the vacuum tube to get hung up. Off comes the oil pan, some of the sharper metal baffle edges were cut off, and a blocking piece of steel angle iron welded into the place to keep the tube from folding up under a baffle plate.
    Now, the vacuum tube easily gets to the bottom of the oil pan without getting hung up.
    Oil filter changes still happen, just not on every oil change. My wallet likes it. My back likes it. The landfill likes it. The vehicles are up on jack stands often enough anyway for other maintenance to allow for acceptable filter change intervals.

    18:28 those two bolt holes near the fuel pump mount can be a source of oil leaks. Make sure you put bolts in there.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 лет назад +2

      Oh, good point! I meant to point that out in the video and totally forgot to. On later blocks like this one (that didn't come with mechanical fuel pumps but still had the provisions), those are blind holes. On earlier first gen blocks, you are correct, you need to put a short bolt in with sealer to prevent an oil leak from the top hole. Always check that, and make sure the bolt used doesn't hit the pushrod when tightened!

    • @dave1135
      @dave1135 6 лет назад +2

      FuzzyDicePimp on those older engines with the pushrod, I would remove that short bolt and install a long one and tighten it until it just contacted the pushrod, then snugged it. Then I'd go ahead and replace the pump. The pushrod would stay in place, and it made replacing pumps on cars with limited access way easier, no fighting to get the pushrod back up and held I'm place while you fought to get the mounting bolts started. After it was back together, I'd remove the long bolt, apply sealer to the original and tighten. I was a gm tech at a dealership, and we all did pumps this way.

    Really enjoying your build series! Great editing and sense of humor- quick question- you reused the original can bearings correct? Did you just inspect for bearing wear and decide they were fine for the new can? I’m doing a similar rebuild on a ford 460 and am on the fence about paying a shop $$$ for cam bearings. Thanks!

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 лет назад +1

      Yep, they looked to be in good shape so I cheaped out and left them in. It was a low-dollar rebuild for sure. If it's a valuable engine or one with important parts, unless they look immaculate I'd just get a cam bearing installer and go for it! Just take your time with it and make sure the oil hole orientation and installation order is correct, and it's really not bad!

  • @mcqueenfanman

    On a chevy you want both timing gear marks at 12 o'clock, then you can install the distributor w/ the rotor pointing at #1.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 лет назад +2

      You mean after the chain is installed (marks facing each other), rotate the crank so that they point up so that it is starting off at TDC? Good tip, but with the order I went in, the crank was rotated after that anyway when setting lifter preload. So, wouldn't have mattered in my case.

    Your videos are awesome. I'm currently in the middle of my rebuild of my 1988 camaro 305 engine to put in my 1991 s10 4x4. Question I see you cut and welded the oil pan. What oil pan is that (originally from) I'm needing help to decide what pan to get

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! The top of the pan (the flange, where it bolts to the block) is the 350 truck oil pan that came on the engine, the bottom of the pan is from the 4x4 4.3L oil pan. You can see it pretty well in Episode 2 of this series, it shows the before/after cutting, and some of the welding process.

    I’m still worried about the welds on the oilpan....too much vibration or hitting an object, and she’s gonna spill.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  5 лет назад +1

      I can't imagine the oil pan would ever separate. It would most likely fold the sides in before all the welds would break at once. It might develop a pinhole leak if the JB weld starts to break down, but no signs of any issues yet, a few thousand miles (and one minor crash) later.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 лет назад

      I'm sure that would be fine, but I don't think it matters all that much in the end. After the white lithium washes off it will only be lubricated by oil, and there isn't any break-in for these timing chains that oil can't handle.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 лет назад +3

      Correct! I filmed the whole "episode" on the concept of putting the engine back together, edited it into one video (an hour and 50 minutes long!), then split that project file up into these individual parts for many reasons. So the video files for the other parts of this episode are roughly edited together, but still need a few hours of work for each part to be ready to upload!

    You shouldnt reuse the gears on the timing chain, because the are worn for the onld chain and can cause it to grenade

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 лет назад +1

      If the gears are in good condition like these were, there is really no need to replace both. In normal circumstances, the chain is the wear item as the links will stretch over time. There might be some amount of wear mating between the chain and the gears, but nothing so significant that it will be a problem using a new chain on gears with no visible wear. Plus, a standard small block Chevy wouldn't grenade even if the timing chain snapped, it would just stop running, they are non-interference engines so the pistons and the valves wouldn't touch.
