Dear LesleytheBirdned I am a huge fan of your RUclips channel and of bird watching in general. Recently I put up my own bird feeder and have been enjoying witnessing avian life in a new way, until I heard of the Solomon bird outbreak. The one that spreads at busy bird feeders and is particularly dangerous to pine skins. I live in the state where most people get salmonella from their bird feeders, I just happen to have a busy bird feeder where pine siskins visit.
Even though I clean my bird feeder out regularly, my sanitation standards were not as thorough as the one you recommended in your video about the importance of maintaining a clean bird feeder (which is where I heard about the Salmonella incident anyway.) There have been some spots I haven't been able to rub out, earlier I thought not much about that but now I'm worried about the safety of the birds. Not to mention with spring quickly coming in my area, hotter and wetter conditions combined with more birds could be a breeding ground for disease.
Also the birds were very messy with their food, at first I did not thick too much of this. I later observed some small birds, a few large birds like crows and even a squirrel eating some of the leftover food from the bird feederI. I'm worried that the squirrel or other small mammals (Like rats or raccoons) may grow an unhealthy reliance on the leftover bird food, and may try and break into the bird feeder or into my house.
For all these reasons I immediately took down my bird feeder, gave it the short of a thorough wash you recommended, and began researching the salmonella bird outbreaks. The problem was I couldn't find any information on the salmonella bird situation after 2021.I am not going to risk it and put my bird feeder back up, and I still don't have solutions for my other problem anyway. I would keep my bird feeder down forever if it kept the birds safe, but that doesn't mean I would like it. Watching the birds from my window has brought me so much joy, motivation and inspiration recently, and I would hate to give it up. I have and will continue my research on the subject.
If no new news comes out about the outbreak by autumn i might put it. However, if possible I wouldn't want to wait that long, I was excited to see some new spring and summer birds. I have learned more about bird identification since I took my feet down, and I would love to test my bird identification skills. So if you have any knowledge of the church situation ( or for the other problems ) it would be much appreciated. If you have any, just responding to this comment would be easiest for me. I will also Leave links to my social media where you can find me.
I think I will also contact some other Internet birder’s I like. If there is anyone you think might know more about this than you ro me then please contact me. If anyone in the comments reading this knows anything about this feel free to tell me as well. I think that the bird feeder I got came with a thing saying that they would refund the bird feeder if it got damaged. I'm not sure if my bird's subpar sanitation is bad enough it needs to be replaced and I'm not sure it would count as being damaged. I'm not completely sure they even said the refund thing. So if they did it might come in handy
Thank you for any and all help and for Teaching and inspiring birders like me and just being a friend of the birds
I didn't see any videos on the Whippoorwill. Do you think you'll ever do one? My Grandpa died when I was 6 and I only remember visiting him on the farm a couple times since he lived so far away. He had no electricity, gas or running water in the house so we slept with open windows and I loved going to sleep listening to the Whippoorwill. I've heard clips of their mournful sounding song but it's always cut short, just a couple sounds. I know they're elusive but I would love it if you covered them. I think they also call them Night Hawks. I don't know much else about them. Thanks for all your lovely videos.
Just ordered another Tshirt. I get so many compliments (and good conversations) from wearing them!
You were never a nerd.
I LOVE their song SO MUCH😩🥹💛
Unmistakable, beautiful song ❤
These posts put me in a world I prefer to be in
So glad you are back and helping to ID backyard singers for me.
Magical bird song and exquisite photography. Thank you Leslie Thank you Lesley. ❤
I love these little guys so much nothing makes me happier than hearing them sing their beautiful tune in the evenings
When the rest of my family gets up early for work, I often nap on my front porch to wake up to birdsong. It's the nicest part of being retired!
that song is otherworldly
In a world full of bad news stories I've discovered Lesley the bird nerd. What JOY!!! Thank you Lesley!! This is the best RUclips "class" I've ever taken :)
Aww Lisa what a sweet comment. Thank you ❤
I concur wholeheartedly❤. My trees are coming alive with birdsong! It heals my soul
The good news (of Christ) is God gave us a savior for our sins as he promised, Jesus of Nazareth, Christ! Repent of your sins and seek him earnestly. He shall draw nigh to you and take you away from this world you can evidently see is so bad.
I woke up from brain surgery two years ago with my phone laying somewhere under me in my bed. What I heard was Lesley's voice as she was talking about, and to Blue. It was so calming and interesting. I had a long road back during recovery. She was there all along the way. And is still there for me now. I've always wanted to thank her, and tell her what she has meant to me. Your comment gave me a little push to do so now. Thank you for that. And I thank you Lesley, from my heart. 💜
@@dar5108 Oh you are so sweet. Thank you. I hope you are enjoying good health. Yes, Leslie is a bright light in this world!
Oh my goodness that was exquisitely beautiful! Thank you Lesley for bringing this joy to us!
It is pure joy.
The absolute king in the forest of the misty morning airwaves
Among the most beautiful sounds and songs I've ever heard.
For all you musicians out there: the first three notes in intervals are 5th, flat 3rd, 1...with the 1 then being repeated in a syncopated manner. For the non-musicians: those first three notes are the main guitar riff to 'Smoke on the Water' played in reverse.. LOL! I hear these cute little guys singing this in my yard endlessly for hours at a time. Each bird makes the song his own with different variations on the main theme, too. So amazing 😀
It also sounds like the first three descending notes of The Black Crowes song Remedy, just a higher pitch. I looked up the bird song and found it was this little white-throated sparrow…but, my local ones don’t finish the typical song that usually ends in a pair of triplets - they just stick to the first three notes. I also read somewhere that this song has been studied for years and they have found the bird has been changing their dialect to the same first three descending followed by a pair of doublets instead of the triplets. So, if most of them are replacing the triplets with doublets, why are my local ones dropping the ending entirely?
@@Scott-hb4st Oh man 'Remedy' takes me back to the early 90s lol! Similar descending motif, but where the first three notes of 'Remedy' walk down a major scale in intervals 4th, 3rd, 1(root), the infinitely cooler White Throated Sparrow takes a decidedly more bluesy approach, with the first three notes walking down a pentatonic minor/blues scale in intervals of 4th, flat 3rd, 1(root). This cute little guy is singing the first three notes E, D, B (I'm using the third note B as the root, as the whole song seems to center around that. Just like your sparrows, the White Throated Sparrows around me just endlessly perform the main three note theme by itself, only rarely throwing in the staccato triplets! I'm guessing it's regional, with the birds in different areas of the country singing different variations on the main song. Super appropriate, as this 'bluesy' bird song is kind of like the blues singers/players in the 1920s, 30s & 40s, in that the same song was played differently, depending what region of the country you were in. Thanks for the interesting reply!
Also, just to clarify: I was wrong in my first comment that the intervals were 5th, flat 3rd, 1(root). I actually broke out my guitar in order to play along with Lesley's wonderful video clip here, and it's most definitely 4th, flat 3rd, 1(root), which in this instance are the notes E, D, B. What's weird is that the White Throated Sparrows here in CT sing the main three note theme a whole step lower, in the key of A. Go figure, ha ha! I love these creative little songsters!
@@floydmorrison2025 Awesome reply. I appreciate your in depth exploration. Really creative birds! Thanks.
How incredibly beautiful this is in sound and sight.!!
How can it be that People say there is no God

Never heard this bird but what a lovely song .
Finally!! You helped me ID a songbird that I heard in my youth 50 years ago in Northern Alberta Canada. And he’s so beautiful. I never managed to locate mine in the dense foliage. Thank you Leslie!!😮😊❤
How exquisitely beautiful is God’s creation!♥️

Gotta love it… Those are the sounds of the Good Lord coming out of some of His most beautiful creatures for all of us to adore.. Thanks again, Lesley..
I think that too mate ..... every beautiful plant and animal is a reflection of God ....
My favorite bird song for me in North Carolina. The song is seasonal, coming every spring and fall. It is transforming and beautiful, just like spring and fall.
Let everything that hath breath praise ye the LORD! Beautiful, thank you for sharing.
🥰Sounds like is singing a hymn🥰 Beautiful!!!
I only spent 3 months in Canada, but already miss these birds
The pure beauty of this birdsong brought tears to my eyes .... have a lump in my throat. Exquisite. ♥️
@LesleytheBirdNerd
Absolutely lovely. The white throated sparrow was the bird that got me into birds in the first place
I only get to see and hear them while they are migrating. A real joy to hear.
Hearing the return of my little friends in the fall is wonderful. I wish them luck on the upcoming migration.
I've heard this song in my back yard, never knew what it was. Thanks to your video I can amaze my children and identify this bird by its song. Beautiful
I love white-throated sparrows so much! They are so beautiful and precious and special. The song is just mesmerizing! I call these birds Angel sparrows, because that's what they really are.
Finally found the right bird. Heard this one all the time growing up and heard it again the other day, finally decided to look it up. So beautiful, thanks for posting. 💜💙💛
This sounds so pretty. This song sounds very precious.
I always welcome to this little guy to my garden in the spring you're welcome little song
❤Oh myyyyy❤❤❤❤❤!!!!
Fond memories of hearing these lovely birds while hiking in the White Mtns of NH on an early morning or on a backcountry trip. Love them!!
I love how joyous, but also how taunting-sounding, this birdsong is. When I struggled for a year to find out what this mystery bird behind this lovely song was, it seemed like they were taunting me for eluding my sight. At least, that’s what my twin sister said when we recalled our discovery of this mystery bird. LOL Thanks for sharing, Lesley! Also, I loved your footage of the waning crescent moon. 🌙 I pretty much know what the moon cycle is thanks to having a calendar, but looking at the stars, eclipses, meteor showers, and planets at night is a hobby that I would like to get into, much like birding is a hobby for me right now, but I haven’t really had the time for.
Aww hun star gazing is the best. Before I began birding I was big into star gazing, viewing them as well as planets and galaxies through my telescope. It has been a while since I've done it but I think one of these days soon I'm going to break out the telescope again and have a gander. You can even view planets and some galaxies with binoculars. 1050s are powerful enough. By the way I like your story about the white throated sparrow song. I first heard one when I was just 7 or 8 years old. I will never forget how it stopped me in my tracks but I couldn't see the culprit. It wasn't until I was 28 that I finally saw who was behind that song. They are beautiful 🥰❤️
Yeah, the White-Throated Sparrows’ whistling songs sound like the singsongy taunts you hear kids make in the schoolyard to me. Adds to their nostalgic, innocent charm, in my opinion, so I can see why some people associate the song with memories of childhood. I’m surprised there isn’t a sound effect of this birdsong used in movies (especially for animated films), unlike the Red-Tailed Hawk call repeatedly and mistakenly used for Bald Eagles. I think I discovered the song’s culprit back in 2017 or 2018, when I was 21 or 22 years old. Also, thanks for the telescope advice, too, Lesley. Perhaps I should delve into stargazing sometime. 🔭⭐️🪐 🙂
@@LesleytheBirdNerd such sweet sounds 😊

Hearing these right now in my backyard outside of Richmond, VA. Must be making their way north. I love hearing them.
One of my favourite songs to hear on my hikes. Always makes me smile - especially hearing the first White-throated Sparrow of Spring.
Your subscribers have some wonderful comments !

I hope these guys will come to my yard for the winter, they sound amazing
I hope you get them too and that they sing their sweet tune for you ❤️🐦
What a sweet song! Has a unique cadence to it
Miss the White Throated's song now that they have gone back home, but I am lucky to have song sparrows nesting and living in the hedge and spruces beside the front gardens. They greet us every morning with their songs and entertain us at the feeders and bird baths, we think of them as our little bundles of joy.
I am shocked at how much... and how beautiful sounds come out of these wonderful little birds. Thanks for sharing, made my day!
So beautiful. It made me emotional
I thank you so much for the great videos you share. I do miss the great Lesley The Bird Nerd!
So beautiful Leslie. Thank you.
What a beautiful song 🎶.
The most amazing bird call I think I've ever heard. Thank you so much for posting this ❤️
I just got back from Prince Albert National Park, where I used to hear these all the time. I hadn't heard any, so I presumed they had already started migration or were just not in a singy-mood time of season. But then, on one of the last days there, I heard one! It was great : )
Stunning sounds and images. My blood pressure thanks you for this beauty. ❤️
❤️ wonderful
Very beautiful creative video…! I live in Florida, USA 🇺🇸 and I shared it to my sister who lives in Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺. The piercing call of the white-throated sparrow, the background of the forest and the sky, the moon above, we are so lucky to live in this world 🌎
Such a beautiful song! ❤ Now I know who is making that lovely call in my own backyard. Thank you! I always learn so much on your channel 🙏
What a joy!!! Thank you!
Lovely! And these recordings really bring home the fact that there are lots of different versions of the white-throated sparrow song. Not just the "cana" vs. "canada" variations, but different birds putting their own improvisational spin on the tune. And yet it's always instantly recognizable as a white-throated sparrow.
And the shots of one of these little _primo uomos_ high up in a tree and tilting his head back to sing his little heart out -- just too cute!
I love when birds tilt their heads back when they sing, too. It’s like they’re actively trying to put out a performance, and they’re taking a big breath, like a belter. 🎤🎭🐦🎶
I do not recall ever hearing this bird before in any of the regions I’ve lived. The mountain images here seem vaguely familiar, like upstate NY. So beautiful. Thank you Lesley. So happy to find your love of birds today!
Presious and Beautiful.
Tha purple sunset was as well.

Sadly I haven’t heard my resident sparrow song in a couple of years. I tried so hard to identify it since my childhood but couldn’t until I happened across this video a few years ago. I knew it as soon as I heard it. I played this again today, I have my phone connected to an outside stereo so I can watch the birds reacting to the sounds I play using the Merlin Bird ID app and low and behold my little sparrow is singing to me again in the distance just off in the woods near my property. Oh happy day. ❤️❤️
I love these birds. The song reminds me of a military salute.
I love ❤️ too hear the birds whistle 🦅 in the morning 🐦 thank you 🦅for sharing 😎

Awesome video Leslie. Was having coffee and my wife heard the Bird singing she didn't notice my phone and said there's that bird again showed her my phone and she gave me the single finger salute. 36 years down the drain.
I'm not sure whether to laugh or not. Fun comment, hope all is good. 🐦
Yes all is good 👍. She is my best friend ❤️ I'm in my '60s and she a I have known each other in our early teens
I absolutely love hearing these guys in my own yard!!
I once did graveyard shift at a job in northern Ontario, and these little characters would start their song around 3:00A.M.! Nice video!
Wow! They sing as early as the Robins. Did not know that. 😮😄
Wow, beautiful song and cadence. Thank you.
So amazing! Wonderful song.
Thank you, Lesley. I love the sound of their singing and have been missing it since they all flew back up to your neck of the woods. It is amazing how such tiny creatures have such beautiful songs.
You are welcome my friend. ❤️🐦
I love the way you've arranged the footage with these calls. There's a beautiful, haunting quality to it that really gets to me in a good way.

Absolutely Fantastic Lesley! Goosebumps!! I live in Scotland. When I was a wee boy, I heard this song so many times on Nature Shows, and craved to know his name. I even bugged Shawn James a while back, because I kept hearing it in his cabin building videos. To no avail. 😒 So thank you and Much Love from Scotland!👏🏻🤗❤️🏴
The sound coming from that white throated sparrow and your photography of nature takes me to beautiful place. Beautiful beautiful video. 💝✨
That's wonderful ❤️🐦
I literally can’t thank you enough for this. I’m born and raised in Canada and this is always been my favourite bird call but I’ve never known what bird it was but it was always the one call that would make me feel content so thank you for giving me some answers
Adorable white throated sparrows singing I can see they are as crepuscular as ever too even during breeding season also good examples of how they personalize their songs even if I struggle to tell the difference short of side by side playing. I love these birds and as much as I miss them I hope they are raising cute little baby white throated sparrows. :)
They are so busy raising babies lately. I'd say you will be seeing many of these sweet little ones later this year ❤️🐦
Beautiful!! Bird songs are the soul of Earth.
Beautiful! Almost Chickadee-esque 😊
There really is a similarity ❤️
Beautiful 💚
This is a beautiful magical song. Wonderful to hear. Gorgeous scenery too ! 💜
I can’t get enough of their beautiful songs. I’ve also noticed that Carolina chickadees sometimes sing a similar song. 🎶 Who doesn’t adore birds?!!🐦

Just fabulous, I am overwhelmed by the audio and video quality! Thank you so much, I'm going to listen to this one often.
Thanks so much ❤️🐦
Thank you, Lesley! The gorgeous footage perfectly matched the beautiful song of the White-throated Sparrow. One of the highlights of each spring is hearing these little guys singing.
Here in Maryland, birders are actually still seeing and hearing a few vagrant White-throated Sparrows. I hope the little birds find their way up north soon.
Aww sweet little ones decided to stick around.
Funnily enough, the White-Throated Sparrows in my are have stayed until at least early May of this year. Usually, they leave by the time April comes around. I knew the vagrants weren’t just an anomaly solely seen in my area. 😁
@@BirdsandGhibliFan I personally haven't seen any vagrant White-throated Sparrows, but they are still occasionally appearing on my daily rare bird alerts from eBird. I wonder if they will breed here. Also, the Gray Catbirds were very late coming this year, and I heard that last year, the hummingbirds were late. Maybe, every now and then, bird migrations get disrupted for one reason or another. Hopefully, the White-throated Sparrows will leave at their regular time next year!
@@susana.954 I’ve noticed that the Hummingbirds seem to arrive early, but have taken awhile to come in the backyard. Not sure if it’s because I was a bit late in putting nectar feeders out, or that it was just a coincidence and they weren’t ready to arrive at the backyard, for whatever reason. Also, the Gray Catbirds came to eat jelly in early May this year, then took a random hiatus from mid-May to June, and have come back when I put the jelly dish out this month. Perhaps for both species, it was a matter of nesting, too, like the Carolina Wrens.
@@BirdsandGhibliFan You are right about the hummingbirds. Last year, my hummer came to the flowers late in July, and, as of now, despite the Bee Balm, zinnias, and a nectar feeder, I still haven't seen any hummers! A friend of mine in Ohio said the hummingbirds were late last summer, but maybe they were just late coming to his feeders.
Also last year, the catbirds returned late in March, so I was a little concerned when they didn't show up until May this year. That's funny about your catbirds taking a hiatus. Mine also stopped coming into the yard for a few weeks. I thought it was because of the huge dove crowd, but it was probably due to nesting.
