Rich, I have a feeling you have other reasons from the survival community why we would want a fire, other than keeping warm - in fact I heard you mention then in a video, I think. Sterilizing water was one of them, I believe?

I have a friend who used to "brag" about his Boy Scouts having to be able to start a fire with one match. I replied my Girl Scouts used a ferrocerium rod. LOL. Since we had girls I was an assistant leader for a while. They all had orange handled scout model Light My Fire fire steels.
Matches or a lighter would be my backup to the ferrocerium rod...but I do carry it with tinder such as Vaseline coated cotton balls. I believe you can light a candle with a ferro rod, but it never worked for me...I just added a small wisp of cotton around the wick..much easier. A lighter though is a lot handier for melting the ends of paracord. Once I lit a recalcitrant life boat match with my ferro rod.

    A few thoughts :
-I have both the big and small versions of the Firefly as well as the FireAnt, and I STRONGLY agree that one should practice before relying on such a small ferro rod! I've broken the FireAnt quite easily and while I haven't broken a FireFly, I'm sure it's not hard to do! Definitely, read the instructions and watch videos on the technique. (i.e. Move the ferro rod over the striker you're using, unlike typical ferro rod usage.)
-Keep in mind that the paint has to be scraped off first. (And the ferror rod is easy to shape if you do need it to fit the Ranger series or another knife where it won't fit.
-As far as starting a fire in wet environments, I can't recommend watching Coalcrasker Bushcraft's videos. Use small, I mean very small, branch bundles and feather sticks to get to the dried, or easily dried, parts of the wood. And fatwood, either carried in or found on site, also is some pretty amazing stuff! Some relevant videos from that channel:

Also- depending on what firewood costs where you're going, you CAN take in cut down 2×4s from Home Depot or the like! Happy Sunday Anne, with both the Firefly & Fire Ant you need to practice your lighting technique. It took me a few tries with both to make a decent fire so don't feel bad about your efforts looking clumsy. I have a RangerGrip 79 unused in a pocket sheath and I put a Fire Ant & tinder spiral on the corkscrew rather then replace the toothpick with a Firefly, so I was unaware that the Firefly rod doesn't fit well in the Rangers toothpick slot, thanks for pointing it out. Its been a while since I bought any Firefly rods & SAK's directly from Tortoise & looking on their website just now I see that the have raised their prices quite a bit on their rods, tinder & on their decorative SAK's. I still have a few Fireflys but nowadays I mostly buy the Fire Ant sets from my local Victorinox dealer when he has them on sale at a discount. ATB Steve in Tel Aviv.

Rangergrip 79 is awesome. It always feels a little bit.wide to me for how many tools you get.
The Fire Ant seems awesome and F2S had an easier time lighting a fire with that one than with the Firefly!

yes, „light my fire“. Can you imagine? I was looking for my lighter at camp! „Where is my lighter!? It‘s not here! Man!🤯.“ But then my Mora came into my mind… What a relief! I remember starting a fire with the gas burner though I must have forgotten the whole fire kit in the hotel. I usually carry a lighter plus separately the fire kit - both not to be found - plus the Mora (backup of the backup). Seriously, it literally saved the trip! I had to boil water to restock on the trail… No Mora, no water, no adventure. 2 nighter during a business trip 8000 miles from home. No „Oh, well, I‘ll be back next weekend.“

…and, very important: I love to have a cigar (with a campfire) after a dinner with some whisky. That is 45% of the fun of a backpacking trip! You get the deal: No Mora, no fire, no Cigar! (which I always cut with my Victorinox Cigar… my EDC for the past 10+ ys! It‘s in my pocket now! Every its tool gets used on a regular basis… the corkscrew once was the only one in the room with 80 people wanting to drink wine - cork wine, not „turn cap to open“ wine😂 - it opened about a dozen bottles that evening. Me going all the time „where is my pocket knife?“ „It‘s over at that table, they just opened another bottle.“ „Oh, allright.“)

I think it's great that people are adding functionality to their SAKs with things like the Firefly. I'm a city dweller but still going to purchase this & their tinder for the corkscrew because you never know where you might need it. Regarding some not fitting certain knives - can they not just be cut to fit?
One thing I do wish Victorinox would add to some of their standard knives (or some third party could develop to integrate with the current knives in some way) is a glass-breaker. I don't really want to have to remember to carry a separate tool for the remote (but possibly life-saving) eventuality that it might be needed.

    • @thevineclimber

Yes, those both really do fit in the same category of things you would like to have just in case you needed, but you wouldn't want to go to the effort of carrying an entirely separate product for it. Hm. I wish they would, too. Some of their competitors do. But I think they have chosen the way that they're going with the Rescue Tool with the replaceable glass breaker. If they hold themselves to that level of quality, then they'll all need to be replaceable!!

    Anne hello
I like the Tortoise gear fire starting equipment, but it is prohibitively
expensive. I have used ferro rods for many years and learned how
to prepare tinder to get good results. So I guess I would suggest
anyone investing in a Firefly or Fireant get a larger rod to practice
technique with. Next one of the problems with the firefly is it is
delicate, which requires different techniques. I found cutting a piece
of branch 5/8” x 1 3/4” long then take the Victorinox wood saw &
cutting a slot parallel to the length just deep enough to support &
secure the firefly. This allows the head to stick out the end of the stick
and the slot is just the right width for the narrow side of the Firefly.
This eliminates the problem of braking the expensive rod a let’s you
concentrate on directing sparks. I also flatten the side opposite the
slot to make it easier to hold.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  Год назад +1

@@thevineclimber i fit the toothpick under another tool and use it as a prodder of sorts, Speaking of toothpicks, nikguyver had the same idea I have of carving/melting a slot for a push pin or needle into the tooth pick for knives without the pin slot. But he has it extend to the head, I would of just had it on the body of the pick. If I had the delmont toolchest S54 I think it's called the one with the compass I'd carve a groove for a pin and needle into it.

@TeeFetch That is really cool! It's not like the toothpick really has to be that strong... this adds a ton of functionality in essentially no space! I went to try to find that NikGyver video, and I could not find it! Looking through his catalog - wow, he has so many more cool ideas than I have seen before! I don't think YT serves me up his content, even though I'm subscribed. Thank you so much for this cool hack. I think I will do a needle for my Swiss champ, because that would be better for me than a fire steel.

I have this for both my small and regular size SAKs and I’m no expert but they have worked on the first try for me, and I’m just making little fires in a twig stove. Maybe you got a bad batch?
