"slag" is a universal term for the run off waste from mining, it's why in transformers one of the dinosaurs is called slag. However in the UK it also became another slag for "slut". But "slag heap" would have to be a universal term if slag is also universal.
An idea that could be linked would be that in the next games, landfill or deforestation scenarios, similar to Bonewekz but showing us how industrialization only covers the past of the past. Reinstalling old factories built on old temples and how the environment is saturated with garbage and desertified by degradation
That intro brings back fond memories because even though it’s brief it nails the atmosphere of Bonewerkz. The overall faint green hue, industrial brick walls and old yellow spotlights. Brilliant work!
I got a simple theory behind why Phlegg is at such a high position + how he got there. Lots of speculation here though. -How he got there: As the most competent and business-orientated of the Fee-co trio, I think Phlegg is a likely partner of Soulstorm Brew from previous actions. He is undoubtedly their main supplier but is also likely to have advocated for its success. In one of Exoddus' cutscenes, Phlegg is seem directly negotiating with the Mudokens to try the brew until they become sick, and then easily capturing them for slave labour. This almost seems like a demonstration of product to me, a show of good will between Soulstorm and Bonewerkz's partnership. -Why he stays in a high position: Firstly I think Phlegg may have been the one to suggest Necrum Mines as a source of bones for brew. It has likely become his property given the reaction to its loss, a decision that was made due to his direct expansion-focused way of thinking. Additionally going off the state of Bonewerkz I think Phlegg is notoriously cheap and penny-pinching down to personal quarters, favouring manpower over the use of machines wherever possible. In the eyes of all other Glukks, that makes him a low-cost high-efficiency leader, cobbling together gigantic projects with big profits at minimal setup costs. Casualties are likely very high for mudoken and slig-kind due to how shoddily-built and run-down they are, but Glukkons wouldn't consider that an issue.
Finally the Bonewerkz, the factory in which the bones of the mudokons, collected from the necrum are crushed into very small pieces, until they become powder to be dissolved in the brew to give it that deep and velvety taste! This explains those small mounds of yellowish powder that we see in the background, I think they are the crushed bones to be then used for various uses, such as flavoring the brew or creating gunpowder. I have always been fascinated by the fact that the factories are all connected, in fact, in the bonewerkz we can enter wells that take us to secret areas located in the SoulStorm Brewery! Those tunnels maybe serve to connect them, moreover, it is very interesting how you pointed out that the bonewerkz looks like an old hijacked factory, I am not surprised that this is the case, after seeing those crates crashing to the ground, it seems to me normal that the walls and floors are ruined ;) it is not to be excluded the fact that the Bonewerkz was REALLY first another factory, which was then bought by the director Phleg, maybe in that factory they used to make gunpowder lol. I love the personality of Phleg, crazy and sometimes violent just like the bonewerkz, from the character we immediately understand that he is not impressed to break the bones of the Mudokons, the easter eggs on the bonewekz that you pointed out to me in SoulStorm are incredible! I would like to know how much time you spend analyzing the game to notice these details haha! These clues make me realize that maybe the Bonewerkz will be in the next game! I sincerely hope so! :)
Interesting, Bonewerkz was always my least favorite place in Exoddus due to the blandness. But thank you for this video, you have given me a lot to think about in regards to how that design may be purposeful. One interesting thing I found in the Abe's Origins book (page 229) was all of the original art of Bonewerkz and how it was a bit different from what they finished with. The brick columns and piles of bone dust were still there, but the place had more rectangular columns with a ceiling that made it feel more like an enclosed warehouse rather than a vast open space.
I'm so glad I found your channel, I've always loved the four main Exoddus antagonists and finally finding someone who talks in-depth about them, comes up with theories or explanations for even the tiniest things surrounding Dripik, Aslik, Phleg and the Brewmaster is such a treat! I love watching your videos while drawing Oddworld-related stuff, very entertaining and relaxing and certainly puts me in the right mindset xD
the dunes of bone dust in the background and the cistern room like arrangement of pillars make me think of the ending scene in the soviet movie Stalker where they get into the wish granting room
Head Boner Also, really hoping we maybe get to see boneworks in a sligstorm dlc/side game type thing. I'm thinking like RDR's Undead Nightmare "Expansion", not really adding anything to the base game, but using it to make a "new" game between big releases.
Awesome Benny I've been looking forward for this one :) glad you finally got round to making it. Bonewerkz was my favourite place on Exoddus and Phleg was my favourite Glukkon, Always found the place so interesting everytime i played the game as a kid and even as an adult also. Thanks for making this vid.
Thanks, I'm very glad you enjoyed it! :) I'm glad I was reminded to do it because a lot of people seem to really like Bonewerkz and Phleg so it's good I finally got around to finishing the trilogy! xD My completionist nature also demanded it! ;)
One day I'll probably get around to it. For some reason OBS has trouble detecting some old games like this, but I'm pretty sure there's ways around it which I just haven't looked too much into yet. Another reason I haven't yet is I thought I'd die too much to be able to do a stream of it but playing Bonewerkz for this video has relieved me of that concern somewhat, only took me about an hour to do it. xD And thank you btw! :)
For me Bonewerkz is the odder oddworld level ever ! The Wet-Dry-World from of Oddworld Franchise. If you want undestand Bonewerk aesthetic i recommend your research about Atephobia or Atephilia.
Love these location profiling type of deep dives. I watched one of your others earlier that was also great, the Stockyards I believe, (the spot where Abe pops out in silhouette in Oddysee) you were taking a detailed look and comparing to NNT and deconstructing it, from the colours of the sky to the framing to the music etc, I think that kind of analysis is valuable and fascinating to hear others pov. I could analyse these locations day and night. The Elum video was also one I recently enjoyed.
The music soundtrack actually has crushing noises in the background. Soulstorm Brewery has music that's made up of noises that resemble barrels and bottles being used as drums. At least that's how it sounds to me.
I love the way Oddworld Inhabitants made the music kind of sound like it was made from the environments it's based on. It's like some kind of music made from ambient noise in some ways.
I'm so glad you said it reminds you of Feeco. I thought I was the only one! I usually find my self on Feeco Depot standing near the RuptureFarms door listening to the soundtrack and looking around in the background and just makes me think for PS1 game this feels so alive even in the places you can't see but you can imagine.
I kinda find it interesting that phleg would work in a place like bonewerkz considering glukkons often want the best looking establishments and phleg does seem to be considerably wealthy so I doubt he got the job because he is poor
Did he maybe get it before soulstorm brewery started up? Selling the other products, but then soulstorm happened and suddenly he got super wealthy from his position.
I looove the soundtrack *__* It has something "hollow" in it I think... It somehow reminds me again that I really miss such iconic soundtracks in the new games ^^'....
Those annexes are probably just where they keep their skeletons farms. In fact, I’m surprised they’re able to work through all the lag considering they must constantly be at the entity limit with all the skeletons they’ve got to be farming.
awesome vid. weird thought but do you think there are bricklayers in oddworld? probably older generations of muds? and now they won't waste another penny on new builds so like you said they are dumping bone dust all over the place in this old warehouse
I was curious about this too about a year ago and read that apparently there is alcohol made from bones but I can't remember if I'm misremembering or whatever, but I've kept it in mind for a potential future video. xD It's probably what DCP said.
I just thought so they use blind mudokons to dig up the bones. then they send them to muds who can see. I guess they don't tell them they are mudokon bones but surely it can't be that hard to figure out can it?
That's a really good point! Maybe that's one reason for the existence of Bonewerkz, a necessary mid-step to keep everything secret. Like hiring different architects to build one place so no one knows the true layout.
About a couple of hours I think, it's not as detailed as I wanted to make it. I wanted to add brew bottles in the bone hills for when Phleg says 'No bones no brew' and also the Abe poster was meant to like flap around in the wind, which worked in testing but for some reason it didn't do it in the final render and I couldn't be bothered to render that part again lol.
"And its ALL that blue bastard's fault!!!" that line cracked me up back then and does to this day. XD
"He's a Glukkon that wears his heart on his sl... sleeveless suit".
Haha, I like that save!
I forget are they walking on their hands or do they have t-rex arms?
@@10RexTheWolf01 Long arms and short legs, I think. Like Sebulba from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
At this point im convinced the only thing you need for Oddworld to recognize you as an ancient ruler is decent legs
Finally! 2 years after FeeCo Depot and nearly 3 years after Slig Barracks the trilogy is complete! XD
Ha. I just watched those 2 today for the first time. And I wondered where is Bonewerkz. Few hours later, it's here. :D Awesome!
@@4rc28 Haha fantastic timing! :D
i love how massive and falling apart bonewerkz is with mountains of bone dust just sitting dormant on the ground

For me, personally, Bonewerkz is my favourite Exoddus level.
Same here, had such a great feel to the place and that industrial soundtrack that played

If I was in charge of boneworks I would clean the place up and organize all the bones
You would do well in the Magog Cartel I think. ;)
I never knew those were bone powder in the background until last year. I just thought it was a huge warehouse built around a mountain range
Yeah I see what you mean, it kind of looks like that! That would be an interesting concept.

My favorite part of Exoddus, the decoration it's simple but good, fits very well and the amount of bone powder, great stuff.
Given that bonewerkz has been given a cameo in soulstorm could mean it might return later in the quintology
I hope so!
I recently discovered your channel and fell in love with it, you're helping me expand my knowledge on the Oddworld universe

Those boilers look like the faces of the Vykkers

I'd imagine they just got mudokon slaves to build it, a long time ago.
Can you have some more videos on munchs? Maybe gameplay?
Funny, I'm at Bonewerkz right now
Seems mudokons are a very useful resource I wonder what else they can be used for, so far cheap expendable labour, meat, bones and tears
The Glukkons are resourceful, I'll give them that. They squeeze every drop of usefulness out of whatever they can.
Squeeze the jelly from their eyes. It's quite good on toast, or so I hear.
I just realize those piles arent sand... those are.. bone powders. It seems obvious now but back then I didnt realize it at all

in a way, kinda, you can make a broth with bones but i don't know about grinding them down to make a dissolvable powder
